Top 10 Antivirus Software — Top 10

Modern antivirus suites are really household security subscriptions: malware protection plus some mix of VPN, password management, identity monitoring and backup, sold at a discounted first-year price that renews higher. We ranked the ten suites US buyers can purchase today by independent lab results from AV-TEST, AV-Comparatives and SE Labs, then weighed renewal honesty, company accountability and value — because the price that matters is the one you pay in year two.

Bitdefender Total Security

#1 in Category 2026 — American Ranking Institute award badge
ARI Score 93 $60/yr

Best for: Households that want the strongest tested protection without slowing their PCs down

5 devices, 1 accountWindows, Mac, Android, iOSAV-TEST Apr 2026: 18/18, Top ProductAV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 99.5% blockedIncludes password manager; VPN capped at 200MB/day

Product review

Bitdefender Total Security is the most consistently decorated suite in current independent testing. In AV-TEST's April 2026 Windows 11 round it earned a perfect 18 out of 18 across protection, performance and usability, and in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test it blocked 99.5 percent of 400 test cases, the highest score in that round. It also took AV-Comparatives' Gold award for Advanced Threat Protection in 2025, stopping 15 of 15 attacks. The suite adds a password manager, webcam and microphone protection, and a limited VPN, all managed from one account covering five devices.

Pros
  • Highest blocked rate in AV-Comparatives' Feb–May 2026 real-world test (99.5%)
  • Perfect 18/18 in AV-TEST's April 2026 Windows round
  • Very light system impact in lab performance testing
  • One account covers five devices across all major platforms
  • Password manager and webcam protection included
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons
  • Renews at $109.99/yr after the $59.99 first year — a $50 jump
  • Bundled VPN is capped at 200MB per day per device; unlimited VPN costs extra
  • Interface exposes many settings, which can overwhelm beginners
  • No unlimited cloud backup, unlike Norton's suite

The company

Bitdefender is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, and was founded in 2001; it remains a privately held company with offices in the US and Europe. Support is offered through online chat, email tickets and a knowledge base rather than a widely published consumer phone line. The company has built a strong accountability record: it publishes its lab results prominently, discloses renewal pricing on its own store pages, and has no major privacy scandal on record, though like most vendors it relies on first-year discounting that makes the renewal price the figure buyers should budget for.

Norton 360 Deluxe

ARI Top Pick — American Ranking Institute award badge
ARI Score 92 $50/yr

Best for: Families that want antivirus, unlimited VPN, cloud backup and parental controls in one plan

5 devicesWindows, Mac, Android, iOSAV-TEST Apr 2026: 18/18, Top ProductUnlimited VPN included50GB cloud backup and parental controls

Product review

Norton 360 Deluxe matches Bitdefender at the top of the lab tables while bundling more extras. It scored a perfect 18 out of 18 in AV-TEST's April 2026 Windows 11 test, blocked 99.3 percent of cases in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, and took that lab's Gold award for real-world protection in its 2025 annual results. The Deluxe plan covers five devices and adds an unlimited VPN, 50GB of cloud backup, parental controls, Dark Web Monitoring and a privacy monitor that helps remove your data from broker sites — the broadest feature set in this ranking.

Pros
  • Perfect 18/18 in AV-TEST April 2026; 99.3% in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026
  • Unlimited VPN, 50GB backup and parental controls included
  • Dark Web Monitoring and data-broker Privacy Monitor
  • 60-day money-back guarantee, longer than most rivals
  • Covers five devices across Windows, Mac, Android and iOS
Cons
  • Renews at $124.99/yr — the steepest year-two jump in this ranking, $75 above year one
  • Frequent in-app upsells for add-on services
  • Cloud backup is Windows-focused; Mac backup is limited
  • Renewal requires a stored payment method and auto-renew enrollment

The company

Norton is a consumer brand of Gen Digital, headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, which also owns Avast, AVG and LifeLock following the 2022 merger with Avast. Support runs through 24/7 chat and phone via its support portal, plus an extensive help center. Gen Digital is a large, publicly traded company with transparent reporting, but Norton's model leans heavily on promotional first-year pricing and in-product upselling, and its renewal prices are among the highest in the category — facts the company does disclose in its subscription terms.

ESET HOME Security Premium product photo

ESET HOME Security Premium

ARI Score 90 $100/yr

Best for: Technical users who want granular control and a light, no-nonsense suite

5 devices at $100 first yearWindows, Mac, Android (no iOS app)AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 98.5% blockedLiveGuard cloud sandbox analysis30-day free trial, no card required

Product review

ESET HOME Security Premium is the enthusiast's suite: deeply configurable, unusually light on system resources, and strong in independent testing. It blocked 98.5 percent of cases in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, and in SE Labs' 2026 macOS home anti-malware testing ESET's Mac protection achieved a 100 percent Protection Accuracy Rating. Premium's signature feature is LiveGuard, which uploads suspicious files to ESET's cloud sandbox for analysis before they run. Pricing is sold per device, and Premium adds folder protection, encryption and a password manager over the Essential tier.

Pros
  • 98.5% blocked in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026 real-world test
  • LiveGuard cloud sandboxing catches unknown threats
  • Granular controls reward experienced users
  • Very light performance footprint
  • Flexible per-device licensing up to 10 devices
  • No-card 30-day trial plus 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons
  • Renewal price is not published in advance — ESET only confirms the next term's price about 30 days before renewal
  • No iOS app; covers Windows, Mac and Android only
  • Deep settings menus can confuse non-technical users
  • Per-device pricing makes large households pricier than flat 10-device rivals

The company

ESET is headquartered in Bratislava, Slovakia, founded in 1992, and remains founder-owned rather than private-equity controlled — unusual in this industry. Its US operations are based in San Diego, and support is provided by phone, chat and email during published hours. Operating under EU privacy law gives ESET a comparatively strong privacy posture, and it has no major data-selling or breach scandal on record. Its main accountability weakness is renewal transparency: prices are quoted for the first term only, and customers learn the renewal figure only shortly before it charges.

Malwarebytes Premium Security product photo

Malwarebytes Premium Security

ARI Score 88 $60/yr

Best for: Users who want a simple second layer focused on malware cleanup and scam protection

3 devices on Standard planWindows, Mac, Android, iOS, ChromebookAV-Comparatives 2026: 100% in Feb–Mar real-world portion99.59% online protection, AV-C Malware Protection Test Mar 2026Billed in monthly installments over a 12-month term

Product review

Malwarebytes built its reputation as the cleanup tool technicians run after an infection, and Premium Security is its always-on suite. In AV-Comparatives' February–March 2026 testing it stopped 100 percent of 200 real-world cases, and in the lab's March 2026 Malware Protection Test it recorded a 99.59 percent online protection rate, though with a high false-positive count and weaker offline detection. The Standard plan covers three devices with real-time malware, ransomware and phishing protection; the app is deliberately simple, and pricing is billed in monthly installments across a twelve-month term rather than one upfront charge.

Pros
  • 100% of cases stopped in AV-Comparatives' Feb–Mar 2026 real-world portion
  • Excellent on-demand cleanup of existing infections
  • Simple interface suited to non-technical users
  • Covers Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Chromebook
  • Monthly installment billing softens the upfront cost
Cons
  • High false-positive counts in AV-Comparatives 2026 testing (about 20–23)
  • Offline detection of 92.4% in AV-C's March 2026 test trails rivals
  • Standard plan has no VPN — that requires the Plus tier at $79.99/yr for 3 devices
  • Fewer extras than Norton or Bitdefender: no backup or parental controls

The company

Malwarebytes is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and was founded in 2008; it remains a private company focused on consumer and small-business security. Support is offered through chat, email tickets and community forums. The company disclosed in 2021 that it was targeted in the same SolarWinds-era intrusion campaign that hit other security firms, stating its products were not compromised — a disclosure handled publicly and promptly. Its renewal pricing is less aggressively promotional than most rivals, though exact renewal figures still vary by plan and are confirmed at checkout.

McAfee Total Protection product photo
#5

McAfee Total Protection

ARI Score 86 $50/yr

Best for: Large households that want one subscription to cover many devices plus identity monitoring

10-device flagship planWindows, Mac, Android, iOS, ChromebookAV-TEST Apr 2026: 18/18, Top ProductAV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 98.5% blockedIdentity monitoring included

Product review

McAfee Total Protection has rebuilt its lab standing in recent rounds. It earned a perfect 18 out of 18 in AV-TEST's April 2026 Windows 11 test and blocked 98.5 percent of cases in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, matching ESET in that round. The flagship plan covers ten devices and bundles a VPN, identity monitoring, a password manager and McAfee's scam protection. Buyers should read the fine print, though: some features, including the VPN on certain tiers, require auto-renewal to stay enabled, and the gap between first-term and list pricing is wide.

Pros
  • Perfect 18/18 in AV-TEST April 2026
  • 98.5% blocked in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026
  • Ten-device coverage suits large households
  • Identity monitoring and scam protection included
  • Covers Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Chromebook
Cons
  • Renews toward a $149.99 list price after the $49.99 first term
  • Some features, including VPN access on certain tiers, require auto-renewal to remain active
  • Interface promotes add-on services heavily
  • Performance impact is heavier than Bitdefender or ESET in lab testing

The company

McAfee is headquartered in San Jose, California, founded in 1987, and was taken private in 2022 by an investor group led by Advent International and Permira. Support is available 24/7 by phone and chat. McAfee's accountability record includes regulatory scrutiny of its auto-renewal practices: the UK Competition and Markets Authority previously secured undertakings from the company over renewal transparency, and US buyers should note that several features are conditioned on keeping auto-renewal switched on. The company publishes its list prices, but the first-term discount is deep.

F-Secure Total product photo
#6

F-Secure Total

ARI Score 85 $85/yr

Best for: Buyers who hate renewal surprises and want one flat, published price

5 devicesWindows, Mac, Android, iOSAV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 98.8% blockedRenews at the same $84.99 — no promo cliffUnlimited VPN, password vault, ID monitoring

Product review

F-Secure Total is the pricing honest-broker of this category: the $84.99 a five-device plan costs in year one is also what it costs at renewal, a policy F-Secure's US store applies to new and returning customers alike. Protection is competitive, too — Total blocked 98.8 percent of cases in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, ahead of ESET, McAfee and Trend Micro in that round. The suite bundles an unlimited VPN, a password vault and identity monitoring in a deliberately simple app that avoids the upsell clutter common among US rivals.

Pros
  • 98.8% blocked in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026 real-world test
  • Flat pricing: renewal is the same $84.99, with no first-year promo cliff
  • Unlimited VPN, password vault and identity monitoring included
  • Clean, low-upsell interface
  • 30-day free trial and 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons
  • First-year price is higher than discounted rivals — the honesty premium is paid upfront
  • No cloud backup or parental-control suite comparable to Norton's
  • Smaller US support footprint than Norton or McAfee
  • Fewer advanced settings for power users

The company

F-Secure is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, founded in 1988, and is publicly listed on Nasdaq Helsinki; its consumer business was separated from the WithSecure corporate arm in 2022. Support is provided by chat and phone during published hours, backed by an extensive self-help library. As an EU company it operates under GDPR, and its standout accountability practice is pricing: it is the only vendor in this ranking whose US store charges renewing customers the same headline price as new ones, with no promotional cliff.

Avast Premium Security product photo
#7

Avast Premium Security

ARI Score 84 $70/yr

Best for: Budget-conscious households covering up to ten devices with proven protection

10 devicesWindows, Mac, Android, iOSAV-TEST Mar 2026: 18/18AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 99.3% blockedDelivered in the Avast One app

Product review

Avast Premium Security, now delivered inside the Avast One app, posts lab numbers that rival the leaders: 99.3 percent blocked in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test and a perfect 18 out of 18 in AV-TEST's March 2026 round, and Avast was named an AV-Comparatives Top-Rated Product for 2025. The ten-device plan is well priced in year one. What holds Avast back in our scoring is accountability rather than protection: its parent company's history includes a major FTC settlement over the sale of users' browsing data, detailed in the company profile below.

Pros
  • 99.3% blocked in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026; 18/18 at AV-TEST in March 2026
  • Ten devices covered for $69.99 in year one
  • Strong free tier lets you trial the same engine at no cost
  • Ransomware shield, firewall and sandbox included
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
Cons
  • Renews at $99.99/yr for the 10-device plan, about 43% above the first-year price
  • FTC settlement history over browsing-data sales weighs on accountability
  • Frequent upgrade prompts, including in the free app
  • VPN is a separate paid module in the Avast One structure

The company

Avast is a brand of Gen Digital, the Tempe, Arizona company formed by the 2022 merger of NortonLifeLock and Avast, whose roots are in Prague, Czech Republic, where it was founded in 1988. Support runs through online help, chat and premium phone options. Accountability is Avast's weak point: in February 2024 the US Federal Trade Commission fined Avast $16.5 million and banned it from selling browsing data, after finding its Jumpshot subsidiary had sold users' web-browsing information despite privacy promises. Gen Digital says that practice ended in 2020, but the record matters in a trust category.

Trend Micro Maximum Security product photo
#8

Trend Micro Maximum Security

ARI Score 83 $75/yr

Best for: Families that want strong ransomware folder protection and pay-by-the-year simplicity

5 devicesWindows, Mac, Android, iOS, ChromebookAV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026: 98.3% blockedFolder Shield ransomware protection4.6/5 from 6,468 reviews on Trend Micro's site

Product review

Trend Micro Maximum Security is a long-established suite whose Folder Shield feature guards chosen folders against ransomware encryption. In AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test it blocked 98.3 percent of cases — solidly mid-pack among the top vendors, though a step behind Bitdefender, Norton and Avast in the same round. The five-device plan covers Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Chromebook, with a password manager and banking protection included. Note what it excludes: Trend Micro reserves its personal VPN and identity-theft services for the pricier Premium Security Suite, not this plan.

Pros
  • 98.3% blocked in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026 real-world test
  • Folder Shield gives explicit ransomware protection for chosen folders
  • Covers five devices including Chromebooks
  • Password manager and secure banking browser included
  • Long track record and large installed base
Cons
  • Renews at the then-current price each year — Trend Micro does not lock a published renewal figure; list price is $99.95
  • No personal VPN or identity-theft services in this plan; those require Premium Security Suite at $109.95 first year
  • User reviews on Trend Micro's own product page include recurring complaints about reaching support and about renewals
  • Lab scores trail the top three in the most recent real-world round

The company

Trend Micro was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, with major US operations in Texas; it is publicly traded. Consumer support is offered through chat, phone and a support portal, though reviews hosted on the company's own product pages include complaints about support reachability. In 2019 Trend Micro disclosed that a rogue employee had accessed and sold customer support data affecting a portion of its consumer customers; the company reported the incident publicly and said the employee was terminated and referred to law enforcement. Renewal pricing follows a then-current model rather than a fixed published rate.

Sophos Home Premium product photo
#9

Sophos Home Premium

ARI Score 78 $45/yr

Best for: Extended families covering up to ten computers on one simple, single plan

10 computersWindows and Mac (mobile via separate free app)One plan only — no tiersAI-powered malware detection30-day trial, no payment info required

Product review

Sophos Home Premium brings the British vendor's business-grade detection to home users in a single, simple plan covering ten Windows and Mac computers. Sophos blocked 97.8 percent of cases in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test — the lowest figure among the paid suites in this ranking, though still a passing result — and its Intercept X technology adds AI-based detection and ransomware rollback features inherited from the enterprise product. Management is through a web dashboard, which suits someone administering computers for relatives, but mobile protection comes from a separate free app rather than the paid license.

Pros
  • Ten computers on one $44.99 first-year plan
  • Renews at $59.99 — a modest $15 increase, disclosed upfront
  • Enterprise-derived AI detection and ransomware rollback
  • Web dashboard makes managing relatives' PCs easy
  • 30-day trial requires no payment details
Cons
  • 97.8% blocked in AV-Comparatives Feb–May 2026 — lowest of the suites ranked here
  • No paid iOS or Android coverage; mobile uses the separate free Intercept X app
  • Support is chat and email only, Mon–Fri 9AM–7PM US Eastern — no 24/7 phone line
  • No VPN, password vault or identity monitoring included

The company

Sophos is headquartered near Oxford, England, founded in 1985, and owned by private-equity firm Thoma Bravo since 2020. It is primarily an enterprise security company, and the home product is a smaller sideline — reflected in its support model of live chat and email during US business hours rather than round-the-clock phone support. Sophos publishes its renewal price ($59.99 after a $44.99 first year) plainly and offers a trial that requires no payment information, both accountability pluses. It has no major consumer privacy scandal on record.

Webroot Essentials product photo
#10

Webroot Essentials

ARI Score 71 $35/yr

Best for: Owners of older or low-powered PCs who need the lightest possible antivirus

1 device at $34.99; 3- and 5-device plans availableWindows, Mac, Android, iOS, ChromebookCloud-based; ~10MB installPassword manager included14-day free trial, no card required

Product review

Webroot Essentials, the renamed SecureAnywhere line, takes a different technical approach: a tiny cloud-based client of about ten megabytes that scans in seconds and leans on server-side analysis rather than large local signature databases. That makes it the lightest option here for ageing hardware. The trade-off is evidence: Webroot did not appear in AV-Comparatives' February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, and its independent lab record is thinner and older than every rival in this ranking, so buyers are trusting Webroot's cloud claims with less current third-party verification behind them.

Pros
  • Extremely light client; installs in seconds and suits old PCs
  • Fast scans with minimal performance impact
  • Includes a password manager at the lowest entry price here
  • Covers PC, Mac, phones and Chromebooks on multi-device plans
  • 14-day free trial without payment details
Cons
  • Absent from AV-Comparatives' Feb–May 2026 real-world test; lab record is thin and dated
  • Renews at $49.99 for one device — and the 5-device plan jumps from $44.99 to $89.99 at renewal
  • Cloud-dependent model offers less reassurance when a device is offline
  • Fewer features than rivals: no VPN, backup or identity suite in Essentials

The company

Webroot was founded in 1997 in Boulder, Colorado, and is now owned by OpenText, the Canadian software company that acquired it through Carbonite in 2019. Support is provided by phone, chat and ticket through the Webroot support portal. The company's accountability record is comparatively quiet, with no major privacy scandal, but its consumer product has drifted from independent lab participation in recent years — the main reason its score trails this field despite a loyal user base that values its speed and low resource use.

The verdict

Bitdefender Total Security and Norton 360 Deluxe are the two suites to beat: both post perfect or near-perfect 2026 lab results, and the choice between them is extras — Norton bundles more, Bitdefender costs less to renew. ESET is the power user's pick, Malwarebytes the simplest, and F-Secure the most honest on price, renewing at exactly its first-year rate. Whichever you choose, decide by the renewal price, not the teaser: set a calendar reminder before auto-renew, and skip any suite whose vendor will not tell you today what year two costs.

Questions, answered

Do I still need paid antivirus if Windows Security is free?

Windows Security (Microsoft Defender) is genuinely capable and is the baseline every paid suite must beat. Paid suites earn their money with higher scores in some independent real-world tests, plus extras Defender lacks in one bundle — unlimited VPN, cloud backup, identity monitoring, parental controls and multi-device Mac, Android and iOS coverage. If you only use one Windows PC and need no extras, Defender plus good habits is a defensible free option.

Why do antivirus prices jump in year two?

Most vendors sell year one at a promotional discount — commonly 40 to 60 percent off — then renew at or near list price. In this ranking the jumps range from $0 (F-Secure renews at the same $84.99) to $75 (Norton 360 Deluxe, $49.99 to $124.99). Every product above states its renewal figure in its cons where the vendor publishes one; budget for the renewal price, not the teaser.

Can one subscription cover my phone and my computer?

Yes, for most suites here. Bitdefender, Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Avast and F-Secure all cover Windows, Mac, Android and iOS under one plan. The exceptions matter: ESET has no iOS app, and Sophos Home Premium covers only Windows and Mac computers, with mobile handled by a separate free app.

Is Kaspersky still available in the United States?

No. Kaspersky has been banned from sale to US customers since 2024 under a federal prohibition, and its US operations wound down. It therefore does not appear in this ranking even though its products historically scored at the top of independent lab tests.

Should I run two antivirus programs at once?

No. Two real-time antivirus engines on one machine conflict, slow the system and can each flag the other's components. A reasonable setup is one real-time suite plus, if you like, occasional on-demand scans with a second tool such as Malwarebytes' free scanner — but only one product should provide always-on protection.
