Top 10 Web Hosting — Top 10

Web hosting is the rare category where the advertised price is almost never the price you keep. Every host in this Top 10 leads with an introductory rate, so we score value on the renewal price — the rate you actually pay from the second term onward — and print that renewal figure in every product's cons. What separates the leaders is everything around the price: server speed, honest terms, and whether a human answers when something breaks at 2 a.m.

Hostinger Premium

#1 in Category 2026 — American Ranking Institute award badge
ARI Score 92 $3/mo

Best for: First-time site owners who want the lowest honest total cost of ownership

Shared hosting · 3 websites · 20 GB SSD$2.99/mo requires a 48-month termRenews at $10.99/moFree domain (1 yr) + free SSL30-day money-back guarantee

Product review

Hostinger Premium is the value benchmark of shared hosting, and unusually, it stays cheap: the $2.99 headline requires a 48-month term, but the $10.99 renewal is one of the lowest full rates charged by any large shared host in this ranking. The substance behind the price is real — LiteSpeed servers with the LiteSpeed cache, a free domain for the first year, free SSL, weekly backups and room for three websites on 20 GB of SSD storage. The custom hPanel control panel is cleaner than cPanel for beginners. The catch is support: help is live chat and email only, at any price.

Pros
  • LiteSpeed servers and cache give it a genuine speed edge over plain Apache shared hosting
  • Renews at $10.99/mo — one of the lowest renewal rates of any big shared host here
  • Free domain for year one, free SSL and weekly backups included
  • 24/7 live chat with human specialists, plus WhatsApp and email support options
  • Malware scanning and domain privacy are built into every plan
  • A free CDN is included on Premium, which several shared-hosting rivals charge for or omit
Cons
  • Renews at $10.99/mo — about 3.7× the $2.99 headline — when the intro term ends
  • No phone support at any tier; chat and email are the only channels
  • The $2.99 rate means paying 48 months up front ($143.52)
  • Backups are weekly on Premium; daily backups cost extra

The company

Hostinger began in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 2004 as Hosting Media and remains a private, independent company with no conglomerate parent. Support runs 24/7 through live chat, WhatsApp and email — its support pages publish [email protected] — and the company states plainly that it offers no phone support, the one structural gap in its service. Its pricing pages print the renewal rate next to the headline price, a transparency habit several rivals in this ranking still avoid.

SiteGround StartUp product photo

SiteGround StartUp

ARI Top Pick — American Ranking Institute award badge
ARI Score 88 $3/mo

Best for: WordPress users who want the fastest shared platform and will pay renewal prices for it

Shared hosting · 1 website · 10 GB$2.99/mo requires a 12-month termRenews at $17.99/moFree domain (1 yr), SSL, CDN & backups30-day money-back guarantee

Product review

SiteGround StartUp runs on Google Cloud with a heavily customized speed stack — Ultrafast PHP, its own SG Optimizer caching and a free CDN — and it is the fastest shared platform in this Top 10. The entry plan covers one website with 10 GB of storage, daily backups, free SSL and free email hosting, backed by genuinely responsive 24/7 support across chat, tickets and a published phone number. The trade is explicit: the $2.99 headline lasts one year, and the $17.99 renewal is the highest full rate here. You are paying a premium for speed and support, forever.

Pros
  • Google Cloud platform with Ultrafast PHP and SG Optimizer — the quickest shared stack in this list
  • Daily backups included on every plan, where rivals charge extra
  • Free domain for the first year, plus CDN, SSL and email hosting bundled in
  • 24/7 support by chat, ticket and a published phone line, with a strong service record
  • Free WordPress migrator plugin and staging on higher tiers make growing painless
Cons
  • Renews at $17.99/mo — six times the intro rate and the steepest renewal in this Top 10
  • StartUp is limited to a single website and 10 GB of storage
  • The free domain lasts one year only; domain renewals are priced at a premium
  • Phone support is officially scoped to basic issues; complex cases are routed to tickets that only support staff can open

The company

SiteGround was founded in 2004 in Bulgaria, and remains independent and privately held, with more than 500 employees and offices in several countries including the US. It runs on Google Cloud across 11 data-center regions and says it is trusted by the owners of more than 3 million domains. Support is 24/7 with a satisfaction rating the company publishes at 98%. Its renewal pricing is disclosed on its own pages — expensive, but not hidden, which is more than several rivals here can claim.

DreamHost Launch product photo

DreamHost Launch

ARI Score 86 $3/mo

Best for: Owners who want the renewal price printed on the plan card, not buried in terms

Shared hosting · 25 websites · 25 GB NVMe$2.89/mo for the first yearRenews at $10.99/mo — shown on the cardFree domain (1 yr) + free SSL30-day money-back guarantee

Product review

DreamHost's Launch plan is what the entry tier looks like after the company's recent revamp: 25 websites on 25 GB of NVMe storage, unmetered bandwidth, a free domain with free privacy for the first year, free SSL and automated daily backups. The headline is $2.89 a month for the first year, and — almost uniquely in this industry — the plan card prints the renewal right beside it: $10.99 a month afterward. The employee-owned company still publishes a 100% uptime guarantee with service credits, but note what has changed: the money-back window is now 30 days, not the 97 days older reviews still quote.

Pros
  • The renewal price ($10.99/mo) is printed on the plan card itself — the most upfront pricing in this Top 10
  • A published 100% uptime guarantee backed by service credits
  • Employee-owned and independent — no private-equity or corporate parent
  • Free domain privacy included, where most rivals charge for it
  • 25 websites and daily automated backups on the entry plan — generous limits for the tier
Cons
  • Renews at $10.99/mo — about 3.8× the $2.89 first-year rate (the four-year term softens it: $1.99/mo renewing at $7.99/mo)
  • The money-back guarantee is 30 days — the famous 97-day window quoted in older reviews no longer exists
  • No call-in phone support: help is chat, tickets and scheduled callbacks
  • A custom control panel instead of cPanel means relearning if you migrate from another host

The company

DreamHost was founded in 1997 as New Dream Network by undergraduates at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, per its own media kit, and is independent and employee-owned — the company stresses that it has no private-equity or corporate parent. Support is in-house: 24/7 tickets, live chat and phone callbacks, with no published call-in number or support email address. Its current plan cards print renewal prices next to the promotional prices, a practice this ranking would like to see become the industry standard.

Cloudways Flexible Micro product photo

Cloudways Flexible Micro

ARI Score 85 $11/mo

Best for: Growing WordPress sites that want real cloud speed without teaser pricing

Managed cloud · DigitalOcean Micro serverFlat $11/mo — billed monthlyNo renewal increaseFree SSL · staging · built-in cache3-day free trial, no card required

Product review

Cloudways is a managed layer over real cloud servers, and its entry DigitalOcean Micro plan is the most honest price in this ranking: $11 a month, billed monthly, with no introductory term and no renewal increase — the rate you start at is the rate you keep. For that you get 2 GB of RAM, 50 GB of storage and 2 TB of transfer, plus managed updates, a firewall, automated backups, staging and free SSL. What you do not get is a domain, email hosting or a long refund window: this is a platform for sites that have outgrown shared hosting, priced like one.

Pros
  • The $11/mo is the permanent price — no intro term, no renewal cliff, cancel anytime
  • Managed security, backups, staging and caching on genuine cloud infrastructure
  • Hourly billing and one-click scaling; the same platform spans five cloud providers
  • 24/7 live chat support included as standard
  • Free trial runs three days without a credit card
Cons
  • No renewal increase, but no domain registration either, and email is a paid add-on ($1.50 per mailbox)
  • The $11 Micro tier's 2 GB RAM and 50 GB storage suit small sites only
  • No phone support, and deeper application-level help is a paid add-on ($100+/mo tiers)
  • Only a 3-day trial; once you are paying there is no money-back guarantee

The company

Cloudways is DigitalOcean's managed-hosting arm — its own pricing pages describe it as part of DigitalOcean LLC — layering managed service over DigitalOcean, AWS, Google Cloud, Vultr and Linode infrastructure. Support runs 24/7/365 by live chat and tickets, with no published support phone number; its pricing page does publish [email protected]. Its flat, pay-as-you-go pricing is the accountability high-water mark in this category — the absence of teaser rates is a deliberate policy, and its pricing page shows the same numbers to new and existing customers.

Bluehost Starter product photo
#5

Bluehost Starter

ARI Score 84 $4/mo

Best for: WordPress beginners who want the guided, officially recommended setup

Shared hosting · 10 websites · 10 GB NVMe$3.99/mo requires a 36-month termRenews at $9.99/mo on that termFree domain (1 yr) + free SSL & CDN30-day money-back guarantee

Product review

Bluehost Starter is the current entry tier of the WordPress world's default host — the plan once called Basic has been retired. Starter runs up to 10 websites on 10 GB of NVMe storage with guidance for roughly 40,000 monthly visits, a free domain for the first year, free SSL, a CDN and weekly backups, under a published 99.99% uptime SLA claim. The economics improved with the rename: $3.99 a month on a 36-month term renews at $9.99, the lowest renewal in this Top 10. The gaps are support and salesmanship: Starter is chat-only, and checkout upsells pile up.

Pros
  • Long-standing WordPress.org-recommended host with genuinely beginner-friendly onboarding
  • Renews at $9.99/mo on the 36-month term — the lowest renewal rate in this Top 10
  • 10 websites on the entry plan, where most rivals allow one to three
  • NVMe storage, a CDN, weekly backups and a 99.99% uptime SLA claim included
  • Free domain for the first year and free SSL, with renewal rates printed on the pricing page
Cons
  • Renews at $9.99/mo — about 2.5× the $3.99 headline — and higher on shorter renewal terms ($11.99/mo on 12 months)
  • Phone support is not included on Starter per Bluehost's own comparison table; the entry tier is chat-only
  • Checkout and dashboard upsells (backup, security, SEO add-ons) need active unchecking
  • A Newfold Digital flagship: the same parent runs HostGator and Web.com, and support is a shared operation

The company

Bluehost was founded in 2003 in Provo, Utah, is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, and is the flagship brand of Newfold Digital, the Clearlake Capital-backed roll-up that also owns HostGator, Web.com and Network Solutions. Support is 24/7 live chat on every plan; the company publishes a support phone number, 888-401-4678, though phone support itself is included only from the Business tier up, and no public support email is published. Newfold's scale brings real infrastructure and polished onboarding, and Bluehost's pricing page does print renewal rates beside the headline prices — but the group's checkout add-on playbook is exactly what buyers should watch at purchase time.

WP Engine Essential product photo
#6

WP Engine Essential

ARI Score 82 $28/mo

Best for: Businesses whose WordPress site earns money and cannot afford amateur hosting

Managed WordPress · 1 site · 10 GB$28/mo is first-year pricingRenewal price not publishedFree SSL, CDN & daily backups60-day money-back guarantee

Product review

WP Engine Essential is managed WordPress done properly: a caching architecture built only for WordPress (EverCache), development, staging and production environments, daily backups, managed updates and security scanning, on a platform with annual SOC 2 audits and ISO 27001 certification. The entry configuration covers one site, 25,000 visits and 10 GB of storage. Pricing is the rub. The plans page starts Essential at $28 a month as first-year pricing for new customers, its offer pages still show the entry tier from $30, and no renewal price is published at all — renewal pricing is simply 'subject to change.'

Pros
  • Purpose-built WordPress stack (EverCache) with staging and dev environments included
  • 60-day money-back guarantee — double the industry standard
  • Daily automated backups, WAF and malware scanning as standard
  • 24/7 phone and chat access to WordPress specialists, per WP Engine's current pages
  • Page-performance tooling and an optional Smart Plugin Manager that automates updates
Cons
  • No renewal price is published anywhere on WP Engine's site — its footnote says first-year pricing is not valid for renewals and renewal pricing is subject to change
  • The most expensive entry in this Top 10: $28/mo against $3–$6 shared plans
  • WP Engine's own pages disagree on the entry price — $28 on the plans page, from $30 on its offer pages
  • No email hosting and no domain registration — both must be bought elsewhere — and visits are metered at 25,000 a month with overage charges beyond

The company

WP Engine is headquartered in Austin, Texas, founded in 2010, and is a privately held company focused exclusively on WordPress hosting. Its current official pages promise 24/7 phone and chat access to WordPress experts, and it publishes a sales line, 1-877-973-6446; no public support email is published. Its accountability profile is split: a 60-day money-back guarantee and candid security credentials on one side; on the other, first-year pricing that its own footnote excludes from renewals, with no renewal figure published anywhere on its site.

InMotion Hosting Launch product photo
#7

InMotion Hosting Launch

ARI Score 78 $5/mo

Best for: US-based buyers who want an independent host with honest, printed renewal pricing

Shared hosting · 2 websites · 100 GB NVMeRenews at $13.99/mo — printed on the cardFree domain (1 yr) + free SSL90-day money-back guaranteeData centers: Los Angeles, Ashburn, Amsterdam

Product review

InMotion Launch is the traditionalist's shared hosting: an all-NVMe platform with UltraStack caching, two websites and 100 GB of storage, unmetered bandwidth, a free domain for the first year, free SSL and a team-handled migration. The pricing is unusually legible — $4.99 a month, with 'Renews at $13.99/mo' printed on the plan card itself — and the guarantee is the longest in this ranking at 90 days. The catch hides in the support column: Launch is chat and ticket only. The US phone support InMotion is known for starts one tier up, at Power.

Pros
  • The renewal rate ($13.99/mo) is printed on the plan card — no fine-print excavation needed
  • A 90-day money-back guarantee, the longest window in this Top 10
  • All-NVMe storage with UltraStack caching — quick by shared-hosting standards
  • Two websites and 100 GB of storage on the entry plan, more than most rivals allow
  • Free domain for year one, free SSL and a team-handled site migration included
Cons
  • Renews at $13.99/mo — about 2.8× the $4.99 introductory rate
  • Launch excludes phone support: the entry tier is chat and ticket only, and phone starts at the Power tier
  • Term pricing varies sharply — the monthly variant of Launch is $16.99/mo
  • No published support email; contact starts with chat, phone or a ticket

The company

InMotion Hosting was founded in 2001 in Los Angeles and is headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It is privately held and independent — no conglomerate parent — and owns and operates its data centers in Los Angeles, Ashburn and Amsterdam. Support is staffed in-house around the clock, and the company publishes its technical-support phone number, +1 757 416 6575, on its own pages; no direct support email is published. The transparency habit shows in its pricing too: renewal rates are printed on the plan cards, a practice this ranking would like to see become standard.

Hosting.com Starter product photo
#8

Hosting.com Starter

ARI Score 76 $2/mo

Best for: Bargain hunters who want LiteSpeed speed on the entry tier and human, in-house support

Shared hosting · 1 website · 15 GB$1.99/mo for the first yearFree domain (1 yr) on annual plansFree SSL · LiteSpeed · NVMe standard30-day money-back guarantee

Product review

This is A2 Hosting under its new name: acquired by World Host Group, the Ann Arbor host now sells as hosting.com, and its Starter plan is the entry point. Starter covers one website on 15 GB of storage with cPanel, free SSL and a free domain for the first year on annual plans, and — the old A2 signature — LiteSpeed servers and NVMe storage are now standard across the line rather than a paid Turbo upgrade. Support is 24/7/365 and in-house, with a published phone number. The accountability gap is renewal pricing: the current pricing page does not print Starter's renewal figure next to the plan.

Pros
  • LiteSpeed servers and NVMe storage are standard on every plan, including the entry tier
  • Free team-handled migration for unlimited sites
  • 24/7/365 in-house support by chat, phone and tickets, with a published phone number
  • A 99.9% uptime SLA claim backs the service (the company's own figure)
  • The cheapest first year in this ranking, at $1.99/mo per the company's own blog
Cons
  • Starter's renewal price is not printed on the current pricing page — it says only that promotional rates renew at the regular rate, so the year-two cost takes digging to confirm
  • The 'Anytime' prorated refund A2 was famous for no longer appears on the current site; the published guarantee is 30 days
  • The brand is mid-transition — A2 Hosting folded into hosting.com under World Host Group — so expect continued churn in plans and pages
  • Starter is tight: a single website and 15 GB of storage

The company

The company behind this plan began in Ann Arbor, Michigan — its own pages date the launch to 2003 — as A2 Hosting, built a reputation on developer-friendly, speed-tuned hosting, and was then acquired by World Host Group and rebranded as hosting.com; a2hosting.com now redirects to the new name. Support is 24/7/365, in-house and never outsourced per the company, reachable by chat, tickets and the published phone number +1 (734) 222-4678; no support email is published. The service fundamentals survived the takeover — clearly published renewal pricing, so far, has not.

HostGator Hatchling product photo
#9

HostGator Hatchling

ARI Score 72 $4/mo

Best for: Absolute beginners who want a familiar brand and a standard cPanel start

Shared hosting · up to 10 websites · 10 GB SSDIntroductory offerRenews at $13.19/mo (1-yr regular rate)Free domain (1 yr) + free SSL30-day money-back guarantee

Product review

HostGator Hatchling is the budget brand-name start, and it has quietly grown: the entry plan now covers up to 10 websites on 10 GB of SSD storage with unmetered bandwidth, a free domain for the first year, auto-renewing SSL and the familiar cPanel. The indexed introductory price is $3.75 a month. What keeps Hatchling near the tail is the fine print around it: support on this tier is chat only, site migration is a paid service rather than free, the uptime guarantee is worded at just 99%, and HostGator's own price chart puts the regular one-year rate at $13.19 a month.

Pros
  • Up to 10 websites on the entry plan — far more generous than the old single-site Hatchling
  • Standard cPanel, one-click WordPress installs and a Cloudflare CDN in the plan table
  • Free domain for the first year and auto-renewing SSL included
  • A published US support number, (866) 964-2867, and 24/7/365 support coverage
  • Two decades of brand history and over 2 million sites hosted, per the company
Cons
  • Renews at the regular rate in HostGator's own price chart — $13.19/mo on a one-year term ($10.99/mo breakdown on three years) — roughly 3.5× the intro price
  • Hatchling support is chat only; phone support starts at the Baby tier
  • Website transfer is a paid migration service, not the free move several rivals include
  • The money-back guarantee is 30 days on the current pages, and the uptime guarantee is worded at 99% — the weakest figure in this Top 10

The company

HostGator was founded in 2002, is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and today is a Newfold Digital brand alongside Bluehost. Support runs 24/7/365; Hatchling itself is chat-only, with phone support from the Baby tier up, and the published support number is (866) 964-2867; no public support email is offered. Newfold ownership brings scale and a very recognizable brand, but the accountability signals are middling: a 30-day guarantee where older HostGator promotions still advertise 45, and renewal rates that live in a help-center price chart rather than beside the plan.

IONOS Web Hosting product photo
#10

IONOS Web Hosting

ARI Score 68 $1/mo

Best for: Solo projects that want a $1 first year and can live with the renewal math

Shared hosting · $1/mo with a 1-year termThen $14/mo after the first yearFree domain (1 yr) + wildcard SSL30-day money-back guarantee99.99% uptime claim

Product review

IONOS leads with the lowest number in this ranking — $1 a month for the first year on a one-year term — and the bundle is genuinely broad: a free domain for the first year, wildcard SSL, professional email and unlimited-storage claims, backed by geo-redundant infrastructure and 24/7 support with a free personal consultant. Then the second year arrives: IONOS's own offer page states the $1 plan then costs $14 a month, a 14× jump. Add a plan lineup whose US price cards are hard to compare side by side, and the German giant's value case rests entirely on year one.

Pros
  • A $1 first year is the cheapest entry in this Top 10, on a one-year term rather than a long prepay
  • Free domain for the first year, wildcard SSL and professional email included from day one
  • Publishes a US support phone number, +1484-424-7392, with 24/7 support and a free personal consultant
  • Geo-redundant infrastructure: data is processed in parallel in two separate data centers
  • A 99.99% uptime claim headlines the hosting pages (the company's own figure)
Cons
  • Renews at $14/mo after the $1 first year — a 14× increase, the largest multiplier in this ranking
  • The tier lineup is confusing, with multiple look-alike plans and US price cards that do not render a clean side-by-side comparison
  • The $1 offer page also shows a $16 regular price crossed out beside the $14 'then' price — even the renewal story needs a second read
  • A German-owned giant (United Internet) whose US operation is a subsidiary — support quality varies by channel

The company

IONOS was founded in 1988 in Montabaur, Germany (originally as 1&1) and is the flagship hosting brand of United Internet AG; its US headquarters is in the Philadelphia area (Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania). It is one of the world's largest hosts by customer count. Support runs 24/7, and IONOS publishes a US phone number, +1484-424-7392, on its own site; it does not publish a direct support email address. That contact openness deserves credit — it is the pricing structure, not the contact page, that drags this score down.

The verdict

Buy hosting on the renewal price and the support model, not the teaser rate. Bluehost Starter posts the lowest renewal in this Top 10 at $9.99 a month, with Hostinger Premium close behind at $10.99 on a faster LiteSpeed stack. DreamHost prints its $10.99 renewal on the plan card itself, and Cloudways charges a flat $11 forever. SiteGround is the quickest shared platform here but renews at $17.99, and WP Engine — the best managed WordPress here — does not publish a renewal price at all. At the tail, IONOS's $1 year becomes $14. Choose the host whose second-term price you would happily pay today.

Questions, answered

Why does my hosting bill jump so much at renewal?

The headline rate is an introductory discount on the first term only. When the term ends, the plan renews at the host's standard rate — anywhere from about 2.5× the teaser at Bluehost ($3.99 to $9.99) to 14× at IONOS ($1 to $14). Most hosts publish these figures, but usually in pricing-page fine print or renewal tables rather than next to the headline price, which is why we print the renewal rate in every review. Two hosts here, WP Engine and hosting.com, do not print a renewal figure beside the plan at all.

How much should a small website actually pay for hosting?

Judge it on the renewal rate, not the first term. In this Top 10, a good shared plan renews between roughly $10 and $14 a month; SiteGround's $17.99 buys a measurably faster platform, and managed WordPress at WP Engine starts at $28 a month for the first year, with the renewal price unpublished. If a shared plan renews above $18 a month for a single small site, you are usually paying for the brand, not the server.

What does a money-back guarantee really cover?

Hosting fees only, in almost every case. Domain registrations, setup fees and add-ons are typically excluded or deducted, and most guarantees require you to cancel inside the window — 30 days at most hosts here, 60 days at WP Engine, and 90 days at InMotion Hosting, the longest window in this ranking.

Is shared hosting enough, or do I need managed WordPress or cloud?

Shared hosting is enough for most brochure sites, blogs and small stores getting up to a few hundred visits a day. Step up to managed WordPress (WP Engine) when the site earns revenue and you want staging, automated backups and specialist support handled for you. Cloudways-style managed cloud suits growing or spiky traffic, because the server scales and the price stays flat — but you give up bundled email and domain registration.

Does the free domain really save me money?

A little, once. Most hosts here include a domain free for the first year only; it then renews at the host's domain rates, which often run higher than a standalone registrar. The bigger saving is usually the free SSL certificate, which every host in this Top 10 includes permanently. Treat the free domain as a convenience, not a reason to choose a host.
