The verdict
For most home offices the Brother MFC-L3780CDW is the complete answer — fast color laser output, one-pass duplex scanning, and no subscription strings. Black-and-white-only offices should look hard at the Canon MF465dw II, whose speed and 3-year warranty are unmatched at its street price, and color-heavy, cost-sensitive offices at the Epson EcoTank ET-4950, which prints for well under a cent a page. The pattern across the list: the cheapest hardware (Brother's DCP-L2640DW, Canon's PIXMA G6020) still comes from makers that do not lock down supplies, while HP's otherwise strong LaserJet Pro loses ground for blocking non-HP-chip cartridges.
Questions, answered
Laser or supertank inkjet — which is better for a home office?
Laser wins on speed, crisp text, and sitting idle without clogging: a toner cartridge does not dry out. Supertank inkjets win on running cost (well under a cent per page versus roughly 2–3.5 cents for laser) and on color output for the money. If you print mostly text with occasional color, take a laser; if you print color documents and handouts constantly, take a tank.
What is a fair cost per page?
Mono laser pages on this list run about 1.8 cents (Canon Toner 070H) to 3.5 cents (Xerox extra-high-yield) with genuine high-yield cartridges. Supertank inkjets run under a cent per page in black and color. Cartridge inkjets — none made this list — typically run 4 cents and up in black, which is why tanks displaced them.
Do I need single-pass duplex scanning?
Only if you regularly scan two-sided documents — contracts, tax paperwork, insurance forms. A single-pass ADF (Brother MFC-L3780CDW, both Canon imageCLASS models) scans both sides at once; a reversing ADF flips each sheet and is roughly half as fast; a flatbed-only model (Epson ET-2980, Canon PIXMA G6020) means one page at a time.
What is HP's 'dynamic security' and why does it affect the ranking?
HP's dynamic-security printers accept only cartridges carrying an HP chip and use firmware updates to keep blocking others — HP states this on its own product pages. It does not make the printer worse at printing, but it removes the third-party toner market as a cost lever, so it lowers the accountability subscore of the LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw.
How much duty cycle do I actually need?
Far less than the headline numbers suggest. A busy home office prints 200–1,000 pages a month; every machine here is rated for at least 2,500 recommended pages a month except the lightest inkjets. Paper capacity and ADF quality will matter to you long before duty cycle does.
