Mattress Protectors — Top 10

A mattress protector is the cheapest insurance in the bedroom. One spilled coffee or one sick kid can stain a mattress — and a stain is exactly what most mattress warranties point to when they void coverage, so the protector's first job is keeping the mattress's own warranty alive. Its second job is staying invisible: the protectors worth buying change neither the feel nor the temperature of the bed. We screened 20 protectors and ranked 10, scoring waterproofing and durability in independent testing, owner satisfaction, value, and the accountability behind each brand — because in this category the fine print is the product: almost every warranty covers the protector itself and never the mattress it failed to protect. Three barrier technologies divide the field. Polyurethane is cheap, proven and quiet, but degrades with heat and bleach. TPU runs thinner and more wash-tolerant at a higher price. Vinyl is excluded from this ranking entirely. What follows is the order those trade-offs produce.

Ultra-Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 92 $59

Best for: Best overall — the strongest spill record in testing, with a real trial

Lulltra™ polyester–bamboo viscose100% polyurethane backing100-night trial1-year warrantyOEKO-TEX® Standard 100

Product review

Coop's Ultra-Tech tops this ranking on the strength of independent testing: in CNN Underscored's spill tests it was the only protector where red wine beaded on the surface instead of soaking in, and Tom's Guide's tester found it fully waterproof and noiseless through repeated spill, wash and dry cycles. The Lulltra top — 60% polyester, 40% bamboo-derived viscose rayon — sits over a 100% polyurethane backing, and Coop is unusually candid in its own FAQ that the design is not fail-proof against every liquid scenario. Owners rate it 4.8 out of 5 on Coop's site (307 reviews) and 4.4 on Amazon across more than 5,500 ratings. It is also one of the few protectors sold with a 100-night home trial.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • Best-in-class spill performance in independent tests — wine beaded, nothing reached the mattress
  • 100-night Sleep Better Guarantee, a rarity in this category
  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified; no PVC, vinyl or phthalates
  • Consumer Reports Recommended; quiet in testing, with no crinkle
Cons
  • The polyurethane backing can feel slippery under the sheet — Tom's Guide's one gripe
  • No anchor bands; security comes from the fitted skirt alone
  • Warranty is just 1 year, the shortest among the premium entries

The company

Coop Sleep Goods was founded in Los Angeles in 2013 by siblings Kevin and Jin Chon and built its name on adjustable shredded-foam pillows before expanding into protectors, sheets and toppers. The company sells direct and through Amazon, publishes candid product FAQs — including the limits of its own waterproofing — and covers this protector with its 100-Night Sleep Better Guarantee. No support phone is published; support runs through the company's website.

Premium Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 89 $30

Best for: Best value — proven protection at the lowest price in the ranking

Cotton terry (80/20 cotton–polyester)Invisa-Shield™ polyurethane membrane10-year full-replacement warrantyFDA Class I medical device registrationFits up to 18 in.

Product review

SafeRest's fitted Premium is the best-selling protector in this category for a reason: a cotton-terry surface over a polyurethane Invisa-Shield membrane, a 10-year full-replacement warranty, and a price around $30 in Queen. The current Amazon listing carries roughly 280,000 ratings at 4.6 out of 5 — by far the deepest owner record here — and Mattress Clarity credits the membrane with surviving more than 200 wash cycles. There is no trial and no real company storefront; what you get instead is the most heavily proven budget build in the pool, registered with the FDA as a Class I medical device.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • Lowest price in the ranking, with a 10-year full-replacement warranty
  • Enormous verified owner base — roughly 280,000 Amazon ratings at 4.6/5
  • No vinyl, PVC or phthalates; the terry surface stays quiet
  • Fits Queen and King mattresses up to 18 inches deep
Cons
  • No home trial — Amazon's return window is the only tryout
  • High dryer heat permanently damages the membrane; tumble dry low only
  • Warranty covers the protector only, never the mattress

The company

SafeRest sells almost entirely through Amazon, where its fitted Premium protector is among the category's best sellers, and it publishes no support phone. The protector itself is registered with the FDA as a Class I medical device, carries a 10-year full-replacement warranty, and the same listing has anchored the brand's line for years — accountability rests on that public owner record rather than on company infrastructure.

Waterproof Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 88 $149

Best for: Quietest premium protector — a TPU barrier that disappears under the sheet

100% polyester with TPU coatingStandard (8–15.5 in.) and Deep Pocket fits10-year warranty30-day returnsDual-layer waterproof protection

Product review

Purple's protector pairs a polyester sleep surface with a 100% TPU waterproof coating — the maker's own spec lines name both — and testers single it out for silence: Tom's Guide found it completely noiseless, with a smooth surface that leaves the mattress's feel unchanged, while owners on Purple's site rate it 4.3 out of 5 (227 reviews). Two fits are sold — Standard for 8–15.5-inch mattresses and a Deep Pocket version to 20 inches — both backed by a 10-year warranty and a 30-day return period printed on the product page. At $149 in Queen it is a premium price for a TPU build, but the combination of quiet, feel and Purple's support network earns it our AmRank Top Pick.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • TPU barrier testers found completely noiseless, with the mattress feel unchanged
  • Two pocket depths cover mattresses from 8 to 20 inches
  • 10-year warranty with a published support line (888-848-0248)
  • Dual-layer system rated highly for absorption in comparative testing
Cons
  • Premium price — five times the SafeRest in Queen
  • No home trial; returns close at 30 days
  • Owner rating (4.3/5) trails the Coop and the SafeRest

The company

Purple Innovation, based in Lehi, Utah, built its brand on the GelFlex Grid and sells mattresses and bedding direct, with a published support line and a 10-year warranty on this protector. The company states its materials plainly — the protector's spec lines name 100% polyester fabric and a 100% TPU coating — and its 30-day return window for bedding is printed on the product page.

Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 87 $195

Best for: Best certified-organic build — GOTS cotton with a plant-derived barrier

GOTS-certified organic cottonSusterra® cornstarch-derived PU barrierStandard (6–16 in.) and Deep (to 22 in.) fitsGood Housekeeping Bedding Award winner1-year warranty

Product review

Avocado's protector is the certification leader here: two layers of GOTS-certified organic cotton around a waterproof barrier derived from Susterra, a cornstarch-based material that makes up about 5% of the product's weight, with GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE and UL Formaldehyde-Free certifications behind it. Owners rate it 4.8 out of 5 across more than 1,000 reviews on Avocado's site, it won a Good Housekeeping Bedding Award, and testing cited by Good Housekeeping found the membrane survived 100 wash-and-dry cycles. The trade-offs are price — $195 in Queen — and a warranty of just one year, short for a premium organic entry.

Color Options
Natural
Pros
  • Deepest verified certification stack in the category (GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE)
  • PFAS testing now covers 679 substances, none detected (Intertek)
  • Good Housekeeping Bedding Award winner; membrane passed 100 wash cycles in GH testing
  • Two pocket depths — Standard 6–16 in., Deep to 22 in.
Cons
  • $195 in Queen — near the top of the category
  • 1-year warranty, short for the price
  • No Amazon listing; direct purchase only

The company

Avocado Green Mattress, founded in Los Angeles in 2015, is a certified B Corp and Climate Neutral Certified maker of organic mattresses and bedding. It tests this protector for 679 PFAS substances through Intertek with none detected, publishes its certification stack on the product page, and backs the protector with a one-year limited warranty plus the Good Housekeeping Seal's own two-year warranty.

Organic Waterproof Protector Pad

AmRank Score 86 $199

Best for: Best organic pad for sensitive sleepers — GOTS cotton, TPU barrier, dryer-safe

GOTS-certified organic cotton jerseyTPU waterproof barrier (maker-confirmed)Fits approx. 9–16 in.30-day free returns1-year limited warranty

Product review

Naturepedic's pad takes a different construction from the fitted protectors around it: two layers of GOTS-certified organic cotton jersey with an ultra-thin TPU barrier between them — the maker's product page names TPU explicitly — finished with an elastic perimeter that fits mattresses roughly 9 to 16 inches deep. It is one of the few protectors here approved for both washer and dryer, holds GOTS, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold certifications, and is made in India in a GOTS-certified facility. At $199 in Queen it is the joint-most-expensive organic option, returnable free within 30 days and warranted for one year.

Color Options
Natural
Pros
  • Maker-confirmed TPU barrier — thin, quiet and wash-tolerant
  • GOTS, MADE SAFE and GREENGUARD Gold certified; no vinyl, PVC or phthalates
  • Machine wash AND dry — most PU protectors warn against the dryer
  • Two cotton jersey layers feel like bedding, not plastic
Cons
  • $199 in Queen with only a 1-year warranty
  • Pad-style fit covers a narrower depth band (approx. 9–16 in.)
  • No home trial beyond the 30-day return window

The company

Naturepedic, based in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, has built its reputation on certified-organic mattresses and bedding for adults and children. Its protector pad is made in a GOTS-certified facility in India, carries GOTS, MADE SAFE, GREENGUARD Gold, FSC and PETA-Approved Vegan certifications, and is sold with 30-day free returns and a one-year limited warranty stated on the product page.

Waterproof Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 84 $175

Best for: Best service behind a premium protector — 45-day returns and a real support line

Organic cotton jerseyFood-grade polyurethane barrierFits up to 16 in.45-day returnsSilicone elastic band

Product review

Saatva's protector uses an organic-cotton jersey over a food-grade polyurethane barrier with micro-perforations, a silicone elastic band, and a fit rated to 16 inches. What separates it is the company around it: the product page itself promises bedding returns within 45 days for a full refund, a support phone number is printed on the page, and the protector carries a 4.69 out of 5 rating — the highest maker-site score in this ranking, albeit from a small base of 42 reviews. At $175 in Queen you are paying for the build and the service together; the one-year bedding warranty is the thin spot.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • 45-day full-refund returns printed on the product page
  • Published support line (888-983-4539) and a BBB A+ company behind it
  • Food-grade PU barrier; silicone band keeps the fit secure
  • Highest maker-site rating in the ranking (4.69/5)
Cons
  • $175 in Queen — premium pricing for a PU build
  • Rating rests on only 42 reviews
  • Made in China, unlike most of Saatva's US-made mattress line

The company

Saatva, founded in New York in 2010, sells luxury mattresses and bedding direct and is known for service: a published phone line, US-based support and a BBB A+ rating. Its waterproof protector is made in China to the company's spec — organic cotton jersey and food-grade polyurethane — with 45-day bedding returns stated on the product page.

Premium Fitted Mattress Protector product photo
#7The Buck4Buck — best value in this category, American Ranking Institute award badge

Premium Fitted Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 83 $37

Best for: Best value score in the ranking — a certified build under $40

100% cotton terry surfaceGREENGUARD Gold certified10-year warranty30-day money-back guaranteeAmazon-sold brand

Product review

SureGuard's fitted Premium pairs a 100% cotton terry surface with a waterproof membrane and something no other budget protector here carries: GREENGUARD Gold certification, independently verified for low chemical emissions. Editorial testing rates it 4.6 out of 5 (Mattress Clarity), the brand backs it with a 10-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee, and the Queen sells for about $37 — the strongest score-per-dollar in this ranking, which is what earns it the Buck4Buck. The fine print is real, though: the warranty covers the protector only, demands the receipt, excludes commercial use beyond two years, and support runs through Amazon messaging — there is no published phone.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • GREENGUARD Gold certified — unique at this price
  • 10-year warranty plus a 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Cotton terry surface testers rate for a quiet, unchanged feel
  • About $37 in Queen — the best score-per-dollar here
Cons
  • Warranty excludes the mattress and carries a long exclusion list
  • Support is Amazon messaging only; no published phone
  • The brand's 6–20 in. fit claim is not independently verified

The company

SureGuard is an Amazon-native brand that publishes its full warranty terms — 10 years on the protector, receipt required, a long list of exclusions, two years for commercial use — on its listing, alongside GREENGUARD Gold certification (UL 2818). It sells fitted protectors and zippered encasements, offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, and handles support through Amazon rather than a published phone line.

Waterproof Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 81 $107

Best for: Best for Casper owners — a deep 18-inch fit from a major brand

Polyester top with TPU barrierFits mattresses up to 18 in.1-year warranty30-day returns (unused only)Published support line

Product review

Casper's protector is a polyester top over a TPU waterproof layer sized generously — it fits mattresses up to 18 inches deep, the joint-deepest fit here — and it is rated 4.15 out of 5 across 1,680 reviews on Casper's site. The Queen lists at $119 and was selling at $107 when we checked. The accountability record cuts both ways: Casper publishes a real support line (1-888-498-0003) and a one-year warranty, but returns are accepted only unused within 30 days, and an older near-identical Casper protector still circulates at final-sale prices — check which model is in the cart before buying.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • TPU barrier with the joint-deepest fit here (up to 18 in.)
  • Large owner base on the maker's site (1,680 reviews)
  • Published support phone and a one-year warranty
  • Frequently discounted below its $119 list price
Cons
  • Returns only for unused protectors within 30 days — no real trial
  • An older near-identical model circulates at final sale; model confusion is a real risk
  • Polyester top feels less premium than the cotton builds above it

The company

Casper Sleep, the New York company that popularized the bed-in-a-box, sells this protector direct with a published support line (1-888-498-0003) and a one-year warranty. Its bedding return terms are stricter than its mattress terms — protectors must be unused — and an earlier version of the protector remains in circulation at final-sale prices, which buyers should check before ordering.

Sleep Tite Pr1me Terry Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 80 $40

Best for: Longest warranty in the category — 15 years at a budget price

Cotton terry + H2Pro® membraneUniversal Fit, 6–22 in.15-year warrantyLab-certified liquid-proofOEKO-TEX® certified textile

Product review

Malouf's Sleep Tite Pr1me Terry is the dealer-channel veteran of this category: a cotton terry surface over the lab-certified H2Pro polyurethane membrane, a Universal Fit elastic rated for the widest depth band here (6–22 inches), and a 15-year warranty — the longest term in the ranking. Owners rate it 4.4 out of 5 across roughly 3,900 ratings on Malouf's own Amazon store listing, where the Queen sells for about $40. Buying takes one extra step of care: Malouf sells bedding through dealers and its Amazon store rather than a single house storefront, and dealer list prices scatter from about $65 to $100 for the same Queen — buy at the Amazon store price, not the furniture-store ticket.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • 15-year warranty — five years longer than any rival here
  • Widest fit band in the ranking (6–22 in.)
  • Lab-certified H2Pro membrane; OEKO-TEX certified textile
  • About $40 in Queen through Malouf's Amazon store
Cons
  • No single maker storefront — pricing scatters widely by dealer
  • Mattress coverage in the warranty bundle needs a same-receipt mattress purchase
  • No home trial

The company

Malouf, founded in Logan, Utah in 2003 and a Certified B Corp, is one of the largest US bedding wholesalers — it also owns the Linenspa and Lucid brands — and sells protectors through furniture dealers and its own Amazon store. The Pr1me Terry's 15-year warranty is documented on dealer spec sheets and the Amazon listing; mattress coverage applies when protector and mattress are bought on the same receipt.

TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Protector product photo

TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Protector

AmRank Score 74 $229

Best for: For Tempur-Pedic owners who want the matched brand protector

Polyester performance fabricThermalSense® temperature balancingCertainFit™ mesh sides, 8–16 in.StayTight™ corner bands10-year limited warranty

Product review

The TEMPUR-Protect is built for one audience: Tempur-Pedic owners. Its polyester performance fabric and thin polyurethane laminate are cut with CertainFit mesh sides for 8–16-inch mattresses and StayTight corner bands to keep it planted on the brand's adjustable bases, with ThermalSense fibers for temperature balance. The accountability record is the weakest in this ranking: owners rate it 3.6 out of 5 across 1,628 reviews on Tempur-Pedic's own site, authorized retailers commonly mark it final sale, and the Queen sells for $229 — the highest price here. It ranks tenth: a fit-and-finish accessory for brand loyalists, not a value pick.

Color Options
White
Pros
  • Engineered for Tempur-Pedic mattresses and adjustable bases (StayTight bands)
  • ThermalSense fabric and a thin, quiet PU laminate
  • 10-year limited warranty from the maker
Cons
  • Lowest owner rating in the ranking (3.6/5 on the maker's own site)
  • $229 in Queen — the most expensive protector here
  • Commonly sold final-sale at authorized retailers

The company

Tempur-Pedic, part of Somnigroup International and based in Lexington, Kentucky, is the category's premium mattress brand; its protector line is sold through its own site and authorized retailers with a published support line, (888) 811-5053, and a 10-year limited warranty. Owner ratings for this protector are the softest in the ranking and retailer terms are often final sale, which is why a strong brand name does not lift it higher here.

The verdict

The Coop Ultra-Tech takes #1: it holds the strongest independent spill record in the category, a 100-night trial almost no rival offers, and owner ratings to match — at $59 it is the protector to buy if you buy one. Purple's Waterproof protector is our AmRank Top Pick: its TPU build is the quietest premium option here, with a 10-year warranty and a real support line behind it. The Buck Blazer goes to the SafeRest Premium at $30 — the proven budget build with a 10-year full-replacement warranty and the deepest owner record in the field. And the Buck4Buck is the SureGuard Premium Fitted: GREENGUARD Gold certified, warranted for 10 years and about $37, the most protector per dollar in the ranking. Organic shoppers get two genuinely certified choices, Avocado at #4 and Naturepedic at #5. The famous name finishes last: Tempur-Pedic's $229 TEMPUR-Protect carries the weakest owner rating of the ten.

Questions, answered

Does a mattress stain really void my mattress warranty?

Usually, yes. Most mattress warranties exclude stains, and a stain is the most common reason claims are denied — which makes a $30–$60 protector the cheapest warranty protection you can buy. Keep the protector's receipt with the mattress paperwork: if a leak ever does get through, the receipt and photos are what a claim, with the mattress maker or the protector brand, will ask for.

Will a protector change how my mattress feels?

The good ones don't. Cotton-terry and TPU protectors — the SafeRest, the Purple, the SureGuard — test as feel-neutral and noiseless under a fitted sheet. What changes feel is thickness and plastic: padded protectors and anything vinyl will alter the surface and announce themselves with crinkling. If you paid for a specific mattress feel, choose a thin terry or TPU model and skip pads.

Do waterproof protectors sleep hot?

The membrane is the heat variable, not the brand. Polyurethane laminates trap the most warmth, TPU runs cooler and thinner, and 'cooling' tops treat the surface rather than the physics. Hot sleepers should start with a TPU model like the Purple or Casper, keep the protector under a breathable sheet, and be skeptical of any protector that promises to be both fully waterproof and cool — the barrier always costs some airflow.

Fitted protector or zippered encasement — which do I need?

For spills, sweat and everyday allergens, a fitted protector is enough and far easier to wash. Bed bugs are the exception: only a zippered encasement that seals the mattress on all six sides can trap or exclude them, and it takes two people to install. If bed bugs are the actual problem, buy the encasement from a ranked brand here (SafeRest and SureGuard both sell one) — a fitted protector cannot do that job.

How do I wash a protector without ruining it?

Every one to two months, machine wash warm with your sheets and tumble dry on LOW. Heat and bleach are the two warranty-killers across nearly every brand in this ranking: high dryer heat delaminates polyurethane membranes — the brown scorch marks owners report are the membrane cooking against the drum — and bleach voids most warranties outright. Dry it with towels to keep it from balling up, and never iron it.

Will a protector fix my dust-mite allergy?

It helps, with limits. A waterproof membrane physically blocks mites and their allergens from colonizing the mattress, and a washable surface removes what collects on top — that is a real reduction in exposure where you sleep. But a fitted protector does not seal the mattress the way an encasement does, and it does nothing for mites already living in pillows and bedding. Treat it as one layer of an allergy routine, not a cure.
