Best Cat Litters — Top 10

Cat litter is the one pet product you buy every month for a decade or more, so small differences in dust, clumping and odor chemistry compound into real money and daily friction. Clay, corn, walnut, wood fiber, silica and pine all go into the same box, but they behave like different products: some clump hard enough to lift in one piece, some absorb and evaporate, a few can be flushed, and one changes color and calls it health monitoring.

There is no universal winner, because the best litter is the one your cat will actually use, that your nose and lungs can live with, and that your budget survives at a bag or two a month. We scored performance first — clump integrity, odor control, dust and tracking from tester and owner evidence at scale — then owner satisfaction, value per pound, and how honestly each brand discloses what is in the bag and what its claims actually rest on.

Outstretch Clumping Litter (Febreze scented)
Strong charcoal formula (19 lb at Petco), but heavy Febreze fragrance and a 21-day odor-control claim we found no independent test for; the unscented 32 lb version is the one worth re-testing.
Fresh Step$1873
Max Power Triple Odor Guard Unscented (26 lb pail)
Excellent value and 4.6/5 across 12,194 Walmart ratings, but the vaguest ingredient disclosure in the pool — 'natural clay with odor-controlling properties' — caps its accountability score below the cut line.
Cat's Pride$1972
24/7 Performance Clumping Litter
Perfectly serviceable scented clay (35 lb at Target, 4.3/5 across 4,795 ratings), but Free & Clean does the same job without fragrance or dyes.
Purina Tidy Cats$2071
Double Duty Clumping Litter
Cheap per pound in the 40 lb box at Target, but scented and dustier in owner reports than Slide — the third-best Arm & Hammer in its own line.
Arm & Hammer$2170
Original Non-Clumping Pine Pellets
Cheapest per pound screened (20 lb at Target, 4.5/5 across 1,410 ratings) and genuinely low-odor, but non-clumping pellets demand a sifting box and a different routine; explicitly not flushable.
Feline Pine$1369
Simply Unscented Clumping Litter
Honest unscented clay at a fair price (22 lb at Target), outperformed on dust and clump strength by Dr. Elsey's at a similar cost per pound.
Fresh Step$1368
Original Clumping Wood Litter
Coarser wood pellets (12.6 lb at Petco) track less but clump softer than Super Soft, which is the better ökocat for most boxes.
ökocat$2068
Advanced Odor Control Clumping Litter
Petco's house brand (30 lb) is cheap, but there is little published ingredient or dust data to audit — thin disclosure keeps it screened.
So Phresh$1665
ScoopFree Crystal Litter Tray Refills (3-pack)
Works well inside the ScoopFree system, but $73.49 at Petco works out to about $5.44/lb plus a disposable plastic tray per refill — ecosystem pricing, not litter value.
PetSafe$7364
Hardball Lightweight Clumping Litter
Lightweight plant-based experiment at $2.19/lb (10.5 lb at Target); the value math collapses against every clumping rival screened.
Arm & Hammer$2363
Glade Scented Clumping Litter (35 lb pail)
Adds Glade fragrance to a commodity clay; a scent-forward formula with no performance edge over 24/7 Performance.
Purina Tidy Cats$2062

Ultra Unscented Clumping Clay Litter

AmRank Score 92 $21

Best for: Best overall — the multi-cat workhorse

Bentonite clay, clumping40 lb bagUnscentedNot flushableHard clumps, very low dust

Product review

Dr. Elsey's Ultra is the default recommendation for a reason: a 100% bentonite clay that forms rock-hard clumps, pours with almost no visible dust, and controls odor without any fragrance. It has held top-pick status with testers for years, and at grocery-store money per pound it undercuts every premium rival in this list.

The company

Dr. Elsey's is made by Precious Cat, Inc. of Cheyenne, Wyoming, founded in 1987 by feline-only veterinarian Dr. Bruce Elsey and his wife Kathy; the company says it has donated over $13 million in support and products to shelters and rescues.

Pros
  • Top tester marks for clump strength (9.8/10) and dust (9.4/10) in independent litter testing, and a perennial Wirecutter favorite
  • At about $0.52/lb it is the cheapest top-tier litter per pound in this ranking
  • Unscented-only formula from a veterinarian-founded brand that discontinued its scented litters on health evidence
Cons
  • The 40 lb bag is heavy, with no handle or resealable closure (flagged in Forbes Vetted testing)
  • Bentonite is strip-mined, and the brand publishes no mining or sourcing disclosure
  • Clumps can stick slightly to the pan in hands-on testing

Multiple Cat Unscented Clumping Corn Litter

AmRank Score 89 $35

Best for: Best plant-based and flushable litter

Whole-kernel corn28 lb bagUnscentedFlushable (1–2 clumps)Lightweight, long-lasting

Product review

World's Best built its name on whole-kernel corn, and the red Multiple Cat bag is still the plant-based benchmark: quick, firm clumps, very low dust, and clumps you can legally flush a couple at a time. It loses points only on price and on the realities of storing a food product long-term.

The company

World's Best is made by Kent Pet Group (KENT Consumer Brands Americas, LLC), part of Muscatine, Iowa-based Kent Corporation, founded in 1927; the brand's GiveLitter program donates litter to shelters, and its support phone and email are printed on every bag.

Pros
  • Rated 4.8/5 across more than 6,400 Target ratings — the strongest owner score among the plant-based litters
  • Genuinely flushable and biodegradable, and light enough that a 28 lb bag is easy to carry
  • Single-ingredient transparency (whole-kernel corn) with a money-back guarantee and support contacts printed on the bag
Cons
  • At about $1.25/lb it costs roughly 2.4× Dr. Elsey's Ultra per pound
  • As a food-based litter it can occasionally attract pantry pests in storage, per a small share of owner reviews
  • The natural corn smell divides owners even though the litter is unscented

BoxiePro Deep Clean Probiotic Clumping Clay Litter

AmRank Score 87 $31

Best for: Best odor control without fragrance

Bentonite clay, clumping28 lb bagUnscented (scent-free)Not flushableProbiotic odor control

Product review

BoxiePro Deep Clean is the thinking cat owner's clay: a scent-free bentonite seeded with probiotics that consume odor at the source, marketed on a 40-day odor-control claim we treat as a claim, not a measurement. Owners in small apartments swear by it, and the bag's own math — one bag, two cats, one month — makes the premium price easier to plan around.

The company

Boxiecat, LLC was formed in 2009 by founder and CEO Josh Wiesenfeld around a scent-free litter, and later launched BoxiePro as its probiotic Deep Clean line; it sells direct from boxiecat.com and through pet retailers.

Pros
  • Probiotic formula goes after odor-causing bacteria instead of masking smell with fragrance
  • Flat Top clumps form fast and stay on top of the box for easy scooping, with very low dust
  • Brand sizes one 28 lb bag as a month for two cats, and backs direct purchases with a replacement-or-refund guarantee
Cons
  • Clumps run softer than the hardest clay rivals, per hands-on reviewer testing
  • The brand's 'eliminates bacteria' marketing is absolute and not independently verified
  • Maker-store pricing ($1.11/lb) beats retail, where the same bag listed up to $36.99

Large Grains Natural Cat Litter

AmRank Score 86 $47

Best for: Best for spotting urine changes — no dyes

Corn + cassava26 lb bagUnscentedFlushability not claimed by brandPale grains show urine color

Product review

Sustainably Yours grinds corn and cassava into pale grains that clump as hard as clay and show urine changes honestly — by color of the litter itself, not by indicator dye. It is the connoisseur's plant litter, endorsed by Jackson Galaxy's camp, and priced like one.

The company

Sustainably Yours is the litter brand of Petfive Brands, a cat-focused company whose plant-based litters lead its home market of Brazil and are growing in the US; the brand partners with Rainforest Trust and publishes [email protected] for general inquiries.

Pros
  • Hands-on testing scored its clumping 10/10 and dust 10/10 (Tuft + Paw) — elite numbers for a plant litter
  • Pale, light-colored grains make urine output and blood visible without any color-change chemistry claims
  • Full ingredient disclosure (corn and cassava), biodegradable, with a published Rainforest Trust partnership
Cons
  • At about $1.81/lb it is among the most expensive litters per pound in this ranking
  • Tracking scored just 4/10 in hands-on testing despite the 'large grains' name
  • Small owner base so far — 189 reviews on its PetSmart listing — versus thousands for rivals

Cat Attract Clumping Clay Litter

AmRank Score 85 $32

Best for: Best for litter-box avoidance problems

Bentonite clay, clumping40 lb bagUnscented, herbal attractantNot flushableNatural herbal attractant

Product review

Cat Attract takes the Ultra formula and adds a natural herbal blend designed to draw reluctant cats back to the box — the problem Dr. Elsey spent 40 years of feline practice treating. For a cat peeing on laundry, it is the first litter to try before behaviorists and enzymatic everything; for everyone else, it is Ultra at a $11 premium.

The company

Dr. Elsey's is made by Precious Cat, Inc. of Cheyenne, Wyoming, founded in 1987 by feline-only veterinarian Dr. Bruce Elsey and his wife Kathy; the company says it has donated over $13 million in support and products to shelters and rescues.

Pros
  • Built for the number-one feline behavior problem — cats not using the box — with a natural herbal attractant on the Ultra base
  • The bag carries Dr. Elsey's guarantee: 100% litter box use or your money back
  • Same hard-clumping, low-dust bentonite performance as the #1 pick
Cons
  • The $0.80/lb premium over Ultra buys nothing if your cat already uses the box reliably
  • It is a training tool, not a cure — persistent avoidance still needs a vet workup for pain or urinary disease
  • Same heavy, handle-less 40 lb bag as Ultra

#6The Buck Blazer \u2014 lowest price in this category, American Ranking Institute award badge

Free & Clean Unscented Clumping Litter

AmRank Score 84 $20

Best for: Best budget big-brand litter

Clay, clumping35 lb pailUnscentedNot flushableActivated charcoal, no dyes

Product review

Free & Clean is Tidy Cats with the perfume stripped out: a charcoal-charged clay in a big pail, sold at nearly every grocery and big-box store in America for about fifty-seven cents a pound. It does not clump quite as hard as Dr. Elsey's, but for multi-cat homes burning a pail a month it is the value benchmark among big brands.

The company

Tidy Cats is made by Nestlé Purina PetCare, which publishes its consumer line (1-800-7PURINA) on purina.com and answers product questions by phone, email form and chat.

Pros
  • About $0.57/lb with activated-charcoal odor control — near the floor for a quality unscented clay
  • Fragrance- and dye-free by design, a rare stance in the grocery aisle
  • Rated 4.5/5 across 3,341 Target ratings, and sold everywhere
Cons
  • The 35 lb pail is bulky to store and awkward to pour from
  • The 'guaranteed 10-day odor control' on the pail is a brand guarantee, not a test result
  • Purina's ingredient disclosure for the clay blend is generic compared with the plant-based brands

Quick-Clumping Multi-Cat Walnut Litter

AmRank Score 83 $30

Best for: Best walnut-shell litter

Walnut shells26 lb bagUnscentedFlushability not claimed by brandMade in the USA

Product review

Naturally Fresh turns discarded walnut shells into a quick-clumping, low-dust litter with genuinely strong ammonia control — the bag's 'proven odor control' pitch is one of the more defensible claims in the aisle. It is the walnut category's standard-bearer and a good middle path between clay and corn.

The company

Naturally Fresh is the walnut-shell litter line of Blue Buffalo, the natural pet food company founded by the Bishop family and now part of General Mills, which prints its consumer line (1-800-919-2833) on its packaging.

Pros
  • Made from walnut shells — a renewable food-industry byproduct — in the USA
  • Solid owner approval: 4.37/5 across 957 Petco reviews
  • Walnut shell is naturally strong on ammonia odor, the sharpest litter-box smell
Cons
  • The dark brown litter hides urine color and blood, so it gives up the monitoring advantage of pale litters
  • The brand's headline odor claim ('7X') is benchmarked against pellet litters, not against clumping rivals
  • About $1.15/lb is mid-premium money for performance a step below the top clays

Super Soft Clumping Wood Litter

AmRank Score 82 $29

Best for: Best for sensitive paws and kittens

Wood fiber15.8 lb bagUnscentedFlushable (brand-stated)Clay-like fine texture

Product review

ökocat Super Soft grinds wood fiber down to a texture that feels like clay under paw, which makes it the easiest switch for cats raised on bentonite — and a defensible pick for kittens and paw-sensitive cats. The bag is light, the clumps are honest, and the per-pound price needs the density caveat: a 15.8 lb bag fills roughly what 30 lb of clay fills.

The company

ökocat is made by Healthy Pet, which manufactures the litter in the USA (Jesup, Georgia) from wood fiber and publishes its help line (800-242-2287) on its product pages.

Pros
  • Fine, clay-like texture is gentle on sensitive paws and is the rare clumping litter positioned as kitten-appropriate
  • Made in the USA from wood fiber — no mined clay and no silica, per the bag
  • Clumps solidly for a plant litter, with low dust in owner reports
Cons
  • Sticker shock: about $1.83/lb, partly offset because low-density wood fills far more box per pound than clay
  • Tracks moderately around the box despite the soft granules
  • Amazon owner rating (4.3/5) trails the clay leaders even as monthly sales stay high

#9

Clump & Seal Slide Easy Clean-Up Litter

AmRank Score 80 $23

Best for: Best for no-scrape box cleanouts

Clay, clumping28 lb boxScentedNot flushableNon-stick formula

Product review

Slide's promise is seductive: a non-stick clay that empties like a baking sheet, with Clump & Seal's baking-soda odor system on top. For owners whose boxes cooperate, it delivers; the split review base — devotion next to one-star fury — is why it ranks ninth instead of fifth.

The company

Arm & Hammer litter is made by Church & Dwight Co., Inc., the Ewing, New Jersey consumer-products company founded in 1846 and built on ARM & HAMMER baking soda; its Consumer Relations line is 800-833-9532.

Pros
  • When it works as advertised, full-box changes slide out with no scraping or scrubbing
  • Backed by a printed 7-day odor-free home guarantee
  • Reasonable $0.84/lb and stocked at every major retailer
Cons
  • Polarized owner base (4.2/5 at Target): a visible share of one-star reviews says it neither slides nor clumps for them
  • Scented — and in the brand's own published ingredient answer, 'Fragrance' sits alongside isothiazolinone preservatives
  • The box claims '100% Dust Free' while other Arm & Hammer copy for the line says 99.9%

PrettyLitter Original Unscented Crystal Litter

AmRank Score 74 $24

Best for: Best hands-off monthly routine

Silica gel crystals, non-clumping6 lb bag (subscription)UnscentedNot flushableColor-change pH indicator

Product review

PrettyLitter is a genuinely pleasant litter — light silica crystals that trap odor, ask almost nothing daily, and turn colors in the box. It is also this category's accountability test: what the crystals actually measure is urine acidity and visible blood, which is a useful nudge and a long way from the health monitoring the brand name-checks. Priced per pound, it is the most expensive litter we ranked.

The company

PrettyLitter is a direct-to-consumer subscription brand, now also sold at Target, Walmart and Chewy, with published support by phone (800-838-3381) and email ([email protected]) and a stated 30-day risk-free guarantee.

Pros
  • Feather-light and low-dust; daily care is just stir and scoop solids
  • Color shifts can prompt an earlier vet visit for some urinary issues — alkaline or acidic urine and visible blood do show
  • Published phone and email support, and the company itself posts the litter's limits in its FAQ
Cons
  • About $4.00/lb on the maker's-store basis — the most expensive way to fill a box in this ranking
  • The crystals read urine pH and visible blood only; the company's own Veterinarian in Chief concedes it cannot detect every issue or diagnose disease, so 'health monitoring' oversells the chemistry
  • The subscription bag is now 6 lb at the same $24 while retail bags on shelves still read 8 lb

PrettyLitter Original Unscented Crystal Litter

The verdict

Dr. Elsey's Ultra earns the top spot the plain way: the hardest clumps and lowest dust in tester evidence, at the lowest cost per pound in the top tier. Plant-based buyers should start with World's Best, and anyone tempted by PrettyLitter's health claims should read the fine print first — the crystals read urine pH, not your cat's health. Whatever you choose, transition gradually: the best litter on paper fails if the cat votes no.

Questions, answered

How much litter does a multi-cat home actually go through?

Budget roughly 15 to 20 pounds of clumping litter per cat per month with daily scooping. Boxiecat sizes its 28-pound BoxiePro bag as one month for two cats, and PrettyLitter's model is one bag per cat per month, so a two-cat home should expect to buy one large (28–40 lb) bag of clay or plant litter monthly, or two subscription bags of crystal. Homes that fully dump and refill more often will burn through noticeably more.

Is clumping litter safe for kittens?

Young kittens mouth and sometimes eat litter while they learn, and bentonite clay swells as it absorbs moisture, so clumping clay is commonly cautioned against for kittens under about three to four months. Fine plant-based litters marketed for kittens (ökocat Super Soft is one) or plain non-clumping litter are the usual interim choice. When in doubt, ask your veterinarian — and any cat that repeatedly eats litter needs a vet visit, not a brand switch.

Crystal or clay for a self-cleaning litter box?

Match the machine, not the marketing. PetSafe's ScoopFree is built around its own crystal trays and should not be filled with clay. Raking and rolling boxes such as Litter-Robot need a hard-clumping litter — clay or a firm-clumping plant formula — to work. PrettyLitter's own FAQ says its non-clumping crystals suit many automated boxes but are 'not ideal' for the Litter-Robot 4 because its sensors do not detect the light-colored litter, and its clumping version is not recommended for automated boxes at all.

How often should I fully change the litter?

Scoop daily, top up weekly, and fully dump, wash and refill a clumping box about once a month for one cat — sooner in multi-cat homes or the moment odor survives scooping. Crystal litters are changed whole when saturated: PetSafe rates a ScoopFree tray at up to 30 days for one cat, and PrettyLitter is built around a monthly swap. Pine pellets get sifted daily and fully changed once most pellets have broken down into sawdust.

Can I really flush flushable litter?

Only a little, and only if your plumbing is healthy. World's Best — a genuinely flushable corn litter — tells owners to flush just one or two clumps at a time in well-maintained systems, and its label notes that California discourages flushing cat feces because of toxoplasmosis risk to waterways. Never flush clay or silica litter, and if your home has a septic tank, older pipes or a local ban, bag everything and use the trash.
