Best Smart Locks 2026 — Top 10

A smart lock earns its place at the front door by doing two jobs at once: it has to be a serious deadbolt first — graded hardware, a real key backup or a credible dead-battery plan — and a convenient way in second. The ten locks ranked here are full deadbolt replacements and retrofit kits for US homes, and every one was checked against its maker's own manual, spec sheet or warranty document rather than a retailer's summary of it.

The differences that matter are mostly about what is in the box. Some locks carry Wi-Fi in the lock itself, some speak Bluetooth or Zigbee and need a hub before they can be reached from outside the house, and one retrofit keeps the existing cylinder and keys entirely. Prices below are for the standard configuration as listed, and where full function needs a separate hub or keypad, the product's own notes say so instead of hiding it in the fine print.

10 products ranked · Selected from 20 products screened — · Scores from verified research — how the AmRank Score works

How this list was chosen: current, purchasable US models that passed this category’s screens, ordered by AmRank Score. A product can score higher and still sit in the screened pool if it fails a screen — inclusion and order are never sold. How selection works

#1: Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt — AmRank Score 90/100 · $329. The Schlage Encode Plus is the lock to beat: the strongest certification in the group at BHMA AAA, Wi-Fi in the lock itself, an Apple Home Key tap, a real key, and the best warranty split here — three years on electronics, lifetime on mechanics and finish. Also ranked: Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi (88) and Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) (87).

Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt (BE489WB)
Full deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi, 100 codes and the same warranty split as the Plus; cut because it shares its bolt and warranty with the newer Encode Plus while lacking Home Key, and lands below the ranked ten on performance per dollar.
Schlage$30074
Nest x Yale Lock
Discontinued by Google in early 2025 and removed from the Google Store in 2026; remaining units are leftover channel stock, so it is excluded on availability (non-merit) despite a capable key-free design. Price shown is the last Google Store list.
Yale$28073
Yale Assure Lock SL (YRD256)
Key-free touchscreen deadbolt whose smart radio is a swappable module sold separately; as listed it ships without Wi-Fi, and its Grade 2 bolt plus add-on module math trail the ranked ten.
Yale$23072
Yale Matter Smart Lock
Matter-over-Thread deadbolt launched in 2025 as the Nest successor; needs a Thread border router for remote access, has no fingerprint reader, and its first-year owner base is still thin.
Yale$19072
August Smart Lock Pro (3rd Gen)
Retrofit with Z-Wave and Bluetooth; remote access leans on a separate bridge, owners report Z-Wave support wound down, and the Wi-Fi 4th generation supersedes it. Price is the last widely listed street figure and needs re-verification before any use.
August$20071
Kwikset SmartCode 916
Z-Wave/Zigbee keypad deadbolt: remote access requires a hub ecosystem it does not include, there is no Wi-Fi or fingerprint option, and its Grade 2 hardware trails the ranked ten.
Kwikset$23070
eufy Video Smart Lock S330
Camera, doorbell and lock in one unit with a rechargeable battery on a roughly three-month rhythm and a Grade 3 bolt; the camera tax and charging cadence trail the ranked ten for a primary door.
eufy$35069
Aqara Smart Lock U300
Lever-handle model screened for scope only: the ranked ten are deadbolts and retrofits. A Matter-over-Thread lever with fingerprint entry, noted as a leading candidate if a lever category is built.
Aqara$15068
Ultraloq Bolt Fingerprint
Fingerprint deadbolt with no keypad on the body — guest codes live in the app only, which fails visitors standing at the door; the ranked U-Bolt Pro WiFi covers the brand with a fuller entry set.
Ultraloq$16067
Wyze Lock Bolt (v1)
Bluetooth-only first generation: no remote access away from the door without a gateway, Grade 3 hardware, and the maker's own store shows it out of stock; superseded by the Wi-Fi Lock Bolt v2 in the ranked ten.
Wyze$8065

Strengths
  • BHMA AAA — the top residential grade for security, durability and finish
  • Apple Home Key tap, keypad codes, app control and a real key cylinder in one lock
  • Three-year electronics warranty with lifetime mechanical and finish coverage, plus a published support phone and email
Watch out
  • No fingerprint reader — entry is a code, a phone tap or a key
  • Wi-Fi locks live on batteries: plan on a fresh set of AAs about twice a year
  • Home Key tap-to-open needs an iPhone or Apple Watch, so Android households never use the headline feature
Product review

A full deadbolt replacement with the strongest residential certification in this category: BHMA AAA for security, durability and finish. Built-in Wi-Fi skips any hub, an Apple Home Key tap opens it from an iPhone or watch, and a physical key still works when the batteries don't. Schlage backs the electronics for three years and the mechanical hardware and finish for life.

Strengths
  • Fingerprint reader reads in under half a second by Yale's rating, with codes and app control behind it
  • DoorSense and Auto-Unlock are in the box — the lock knows a shut door from a locked one
  • Published 24/7 support phone and a 30-day return window at Yale's own store
Watch out
  • No key cylinder at all — a fully dead battery means jump-starting the keypad with a 9V battery at the door
  • Nothing to rekey after a move or a contractor stint; security resets mean rotating codes instead
  • The DoorSense magnet mounts on the door frame, a small visible puck on painted trim
Product review

A key-free deadbolt that opens by fingerprint, code, app or voice, with the Wi-Fi module included in the box. DoorSense tells the Yale Access app whether the door is actually shut, and Auto-Unlock can have the bolt open as the phone walks up. With no key cylinder, a dead battery is handled by touching a 9V battery to the contacts under the keypad. Yale's warranty covers the electronics for one year and the mechanical hardware and finish for life.

Strengths
  • Installs in minutes over the existing deadbolt; the door looks unchanged from the street
  • Built-in Wi-Fi — no bridge — with auto-unlock, auto-lock and a door sensor included
  • The deepest owner base in this category, roughly ten thousand Amazon ratings
Watch out
  • No keypad on the lock — guests get in by app invite, or the household buys the separate keypad accessory
  • Runs on two CR123 cells, the battery least likely to be sitting in a kitchen drawer
  • One-year warranty is short cover for hardware that lives on a front door
Product review

A retrofit that clamps over the inside half of an existing single-cylinder deadbolt, leaving the outside of the door — and the keys that came with it — untouched. Wi-Fi is built in, so there is no bridge to place, and DoorSense plus Auto-Unlock come with it. Landlord rules and historic doors that forbid new hardware are its natural home.

Strengths
  • Fingerprint, keypad, app and key entry plus a door sensor at a mid-tier price
  • ANSI Grade 1 rating and an IP65 weather seal on the exterior unit
  • Lifetime mechanical warranty and 18-month electronics coverage from the maker
Watch out
  • The maker's own table rates the Wi-Fi model at three to six months per set of AAs — the shortest battery rhythm here
  • Wi-Fi and Z-Wave are separate versions, so the box bought today locks in the radio for good
  • No Apple HomeKit support — Apple homes run it through the maker's app alone
Product review

A fingerprint deadbolt with a ring-shaped keypad, a door sensor in the box and Wi-Fi built into this version — no bridge on the counter. It is rated IP65 for weather and ANSI Grade 1, and the maker's own spec table is unusually candid that the Wi-Fi model runs three to six months on a set of AAs. A mechanical key and micro-USB backup power cover the dead-battery case.

The company

U-tec sells its locks under the Ultraloq brand through its own store and major marketplaces. Its locks carry a lifetime mechanical warranty with 18-month electronics coverage.

Strengths
  • Five ways in — fingerprint, code, Home Key tap, NFC card and a real key
  • Auto-lock senses the door itself through a built-in gyroscope; no separate sensor to mount
  • Strong owner ratings, about 4.2 stars across roughly 2,400 Amazon ratings
Watch out
  • Remote control, voice assistants and Matter need a hub that the lock-only box does not include
  • Guest NFC entry means physical cards, and a lost card has to be revoked in the app
  • One-year US warranty is the short end of this category
Product review

A fingerprint deadbolt with a proper keypad, two NFC cards in the box and Apple Home Key support at a price well under the premium tier. The condition is printed on the box: the lock speaks Bluetooth and Zigbee, so remote control, voice assistants and Matter run through a hub — an Aqara hub or an Apple home hub — that the lock-only package does not include. Battery life is quoted at up to eight months at eight unlocks a day, with the basis stated.

The company

Aqara is Lumi United's smart-home brand, sold in the US through its own store and big-box retail. Its published US warranty policy covers smart door locks for 12 months.

  • Home Key tap, keycards, app and key entry with no visible electronics to attack or weather
  • Two-year warranty and published phone and email support, seven days a week
Watch out
  • No keypad in the box — guest codes require the maker's add-on keypad at extra cost
  • Remote control needs a home hub or the pricier bridge bundle; the lock alone is a near-range device
  • The CR2 battery is a specialty cell most households do not keep on hand
Product review

A deadbolt that hides everything smart inside the bolt, so the door keeps the face of a plain, well-made lock — there is not even a logo on the outside. Entry is by app, Apple Home Key tap, the included keycards or a normal key, over Bluetooth and Thread with Matter support. One CR2 battery inside the bolt is rated for up to a year.

The company

Level Home designs deadbolts that hide their electronics inside the bolt itself. It publishes support at 1-833-453-8354 and [email protected], seven days a week.

  • 250 codes, a door sensor in the box and geofence auto-unlock
Watch out
  • Battery life is a tale of two radios: about six months on Wi-Fi against over a year in Matter mode, by the maker's own figures
  • No fingerprint reader — codes and the app carry the daily traffic
  • Electronics carry only a one-year warranty against lifetime mechanical and finish cover
Product review

A touchscreen deadbolt that lets the owner choose its radio: run it on Wi-Fi with the maker's app, or switch it to Matter over Thread for a smart-home platform. SmartKey lets the cylinder be re-keyed to a new key in seconds with the tool in the box. A slim door sensor is included, and battery life is rated at about six months on Wi-Fi and over a year in Matter mode.

Strengths

  • 18-month warranty cover, longer than most locks at this price
Watch out
  • BHMA Grade 3 bolt — the minimum hardware tier in this category
  • Auto-lock is a countdown timer: with no door sensor, it can throw the bolt while the door stands ajar
  • No door-position alerts, because there is nothing at the frame to sense it
Product review

A fingerprint deadbolt with Wi-Fi built in and no bridge, priced for a first smart lock. Eight AA batteries are rated for about eight months, the keypad carries an IP53 rating, and an alarm sounds on unusual attempts. Auto-lock runs on a countdown timer rather than a door sensor, so it secures the bolt on schedule whether or not the door was pulled fully shut.

The company

Strengths
  • Shuffling keypad defeats the watched-code and worn-digit attacks a fixed pad invites
  • Offline Access Codes keep working for guests when the house network is down
  • Five-year mechanical and finish warranty with two years on electronics
Watch out
  • On the standard edition, Wi-Fi runs through a plug-in hub that needs a power outlet within reach of the door
  • Making more than three Offline Access Codes a month requires the maker's subscription tier
  • Matter and Apple Home support need a further hub, and only on units with the right serial series
Product review

A fingerprint deadbolt whose PIN Genie keypad shuffles its digits after every entry, so a watched code leaves no wear pattern to copy. On the standard edition sold by the maker, Wi-Fi runs through the included Secure Link hub and a wired door sensor is in the box; guest access leans on Offline Access Codes that work with no signal at the door. Warranty coverage is five years on mechanics and finish and two on electronics.

The company

Lockly sells biometric deadbolts through its own store and national retailers. It publishes a five-year mechanical and finish warranty with two-year electronics coverage on this model and a 30-day return window.

Strengths

  • The strongest early owner ratings here — about 4.5 stars across roughly 680 Amazon ratings
Watch out
  • Auto-lock cannot tell whether the door is closed — the maker states it plainly — so a timer can throw the bolt against an open frame
  • One-year warranty is the minimum cover in this category
  • Sold in black only, which fights nickel and bronze hardware everywhere else on the door
Product review

A fingerprint deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi for the price of a plain keypad lock. Fifty codes and fifty fingerprints, anti-peep entry, a tempered-glass keypad and USB-C emergency power are all in the box, and the maker states its battery basis plainly: up to eight months at ten to twenty lock cycles a day. The honest trade is printed in its own help pages — auto-lock runs on a timer because the lock cannot sense the door.

The company

Wyze Labs sells low-priced smart-home hardware through its own store and marketplaces. This lock carries a one-year warranty and a 30-day return window at the maker's store.

Lock Bolt v2

The verdict

The Schlage Encode Plus is the lock to beat: the strongest certification in the group at BHMA AAA, Wi-Fi in the lock itself, an Apple Home Key tap, a real key, and the best warranty split here — three years on electronics, lifetime on mechanics and finish. The Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch is the key-free alternative, with fingerprint entry and door sensing in the box, and the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock remains the right answer when the existing hardware and keys must stay. For fingerprint entry well under $200, the Ultraloq U-Bolt Pro WiFi does it with everything included, and the Aqara U100 matches it for households that already run a hub; the Wyze Lock Bolt v2 proves a connected fingerprint lock can cost under $80. Skip any lock whose remote access depends on a hub that is not in the box unless that hub is already on the shelf.

Questions, answered

Do smart locks need a hub?

Some do and some don't, and the box is what counts. Locks with Wi-Fi built in connect to the router directly. Bluetooth and Zigbee locks can be opened nearby with a phone, but remote control, voice assistants and platform features such as Matter need a hub or border router — sometimes the maker's own, sometimes a smart-home hub already in the house. Each ranked product's notes state which kind it is.

What happens when the batteries die?

Every lock here warns before the batteries are gone, and each has a plan B. Most keep a physical key cylinder. Key-free models offer jump contacts — touch a 9V battery to terminals under the keypad for one emergency entry — or a USB port that powers the lock from a phone battery pack long enough to open. Batteries are standard AA cells in most models; two use CR123 or CR2 cells instead.

What do BHMA grades mean?

ANSI/BHMA A156.36 grades a deadbolt on security, durability and finish. Grade 1 — AAA in the newer letter system, best in all three tests — is the strongest residential rating; Grade 2 is the common mid-tier; Grade 3 is the minimum tier and is what most builder-grade locks carry. The grade measures the bolt and hardware, not the app.

Is a retrofit or a full replacement better?

A retrofit replaces only the inside half of the deadbolt, so the exterior hardware, the cylinder and the existing keys stay — the right shape for rentals and doors that can't change. A full replacement brings a new bolt, a keypad or fingerprint reader on the outside, and usually a higher hardware grade, at the cost of a longer install and new keys.

Do smart locks require a subscription?

Core locking, codes and app control are free on every lock ranked here. One maker caps a convenience feature — generating more than a few offline guest codes a month — behind its subscription tier, and that cap is flagged in that product's notes and reflected in its score. Camera-and-lock bundles are where subscriptions usually appear; none of the ranked ten needs one to work as a lock.
