Best Smart Plugs — Top 10

A smart plug is the simplest smart-home purchase: it turns a lamp, fan or coffee maker into a scheduled, voice-controlled device for the price of a pizza. The category has matured around three questions. Does it speak Matter, the standard that lets one plug work with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings? Does it measure energy, so a plug can pay for itself by exposing a wasteful appliance? And is it small enough to leave the second outlet in a duplex free? The ten plugs ranked here answer those questions in different combinations, at prices from $11.99 to $84.95 for an outdoor model.

We screened about twenty U.S. plugs and outlets sold through normal U.S. channels and scored them on performance (about 40%), owner satisfaction (about 20%), value (about 15%) and company accountability (about 25%) — published support contacts, warranty terms, and whether the maker's cloud and app can be trusted to stay on. That last test eliminated a former category staple: Belkin's Wemo line, whose cloud shut down in January 2026, appears in the screened list below as a warning rather than a recommendation.

Kasa Smart Plug EP25
Apple HomeKit plus energy monitoring at a $29.99 two-pack MSRP, but no Matter — the KP125M in the same lineup covers more platforms with the same metering, so the EP25 is the older-generation pick.
TP-Link$3073
Meross Smart Plug Mini MSS315
Matter plus energy monitoring on paper, but energy data is confined to the Meross app, setup needs a Matter hub and IPv6 on a 2.4 GHz network, and U.S. pack pricing was inconsistent across storefronts during screening.
Meross$3572
Kasa Outdoor Smart Plug KP401
IP64 outdoor single-outlet plug with ETL listing and long Wi-Fi range, but no energy monitoring and no Matter on this version (the KP401M is the Matter variant), and Lutron's outdoor plug serves hub households better.
TP-Link$1771
Aqara Smart Plug
Zigbee energy monitoring, but voice and HomeKit require an Aqara hub, metering is limited outside Aqara/Home Assistant setups, and the body is too large for two to share a duplex outlet.
Aqara$3070
Tapo P115 Mini Smart Wi-Fi Plug
Energy monitoring in a four-pack at $32.99, but no Matter — the P110M in the same line adds Matter at a similar per-plug cost, so the P115 is superseded.
TP-Link$3369
IKEA INSPELNING Plug
Energy monitoring for $11.99, but it needs IKEA's DIRIGERA hub or another Zigbee setup, and IKEA's own reviews note the body is too wide for two plugs side by side in one socket.
IKEA$1268
Sonoff S31 Wi-Fi Smart Plug
Cheap Wi-Fi energy monitoring, but control runs through eWeLink's cloud on stock firmware, there is no Matter or HomeKit support, and U.S. retail sourcing is thin and inconsistent.
Sonoff$1666
Wyze Plug
A $29.99 two-pack with Alexa and Google support, but the indoor plug has no energy monitoring (that feature is on the separate outdoor model), no HomeKit or Matter, and a one-year warranty.
Wyze$3064
ThirdReality Smart Plug M1
Matter-over-Wi-Fi plug with energy monitoring sold as a $75.99 four-pack at Newegg, but the brand's U.S. owner base and support track record are far thinner than the ranked TP-Link and Shelly plugs.

Belkin Wemo Wi-Fi Smart Plug WSP080

Kasa Smart Plug Mini KP125M

AmRank Score 91 $40

Best for: Households that want one plug that works with every major platform and still reports energy use.

2-pack · $39.99 MSRPMatter over Wi-FiEnergy monitoring15A / 1800W · UL listedCompact — 2 per duplex

Product review

The Kasa KP125M combines the two features buyers usually have to choose between: Matter certification and energy monitoring. It pairs over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with Bluetooth onboarding, works with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and reports real-time and historical power use in the Kasa app, including an estimated running cost. The body is small enough that two fit in one duplex outlet, and it is rated 15 A / 1800 W with UL, FCC and RoHS certification. TP-Link's maker pricing is $39.99 for a two-pack, and street prices regularly run lower. In testing roundups it is the Matter plug most often recommended, with HomeKit reliability the main complaint when no home hub is present.

The company

TP-Link, founded in 1996 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, sells networking and smart-home products under the Kasa Smart and Tapo brands. It publishes U.S. support contacts — phone 1-866-225-8139 and email [email protected] — and backs this plug with a two-year limited warranty.

Pros
  • Matter over Wi-Fi with Alexa, Google, Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant support.
  • Energy monitoring with a running-cost estimate, which few Matter plugs offer.
  • Compact housing leaves the second outlet free; two fit in one duplex.
Cons
  • Energy data appears in the Kasa app, not inside Apple Home, Alexa or Google Home.
  • Some reviewers reported unreliable HomeKit behavior until a home hub was added to the network.
  • Sold only in two- and four-packs, so the per-plug price is locked to a pack purchase.

Eve Energy (Matter)

AmRank Score 89 $44

Best for: Privacy-focused households on Thread that want energy data without a cloud account.

Single plugMatter over ThreadEnergy monitoring15A / 1800W · Type BNo cloud · no account

Product review

Eve Energy is the Thread entry in the top tier: a Matter-over-Thread plug rated 15 A / 1800 W that measures consumption and, in the Eve app and supported platforms, projected cost. It needs no Eve cloud, no registration and no tracking, and it doubles as a Thread router node that extends a mesh network. It works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, but it does require a Matter controller and a Thread border router in the home. The current U.S. price on Eve's own store is $43.95 for a single plug, up from the $39.95 suggested price at launch.

Color Options
White

The company

Eve Systems, based in Munich, Germany, is part of ABB and sells HomeKit- and Matter-focused accessories. Eve states that its products collect no personal data, require no registration and do not track users; it publishes app support by email but no U.S. support phone number.

Pros
  • Matter over Thread with local control and no cloud account, registration or tracking.
  • Energy monitoring with consumption history and projected cost.
  • Acts as a Thread router node, strengthening the mesh for other devices.
Cons
  • Requires a Matter controller and a Thread border router hub, which not every home has yet.
  • At $43.95 it is the most expensive single indoor plug in this ranking.
  • Energy features vary by platform — Eve's own page limits some energy-management features to SmartThings and Home Assistant today.

Tapo P110M Mini Smart Wi-Fi Plug

AmRank Score 87 $30

Best for: Value shoppers who want the Kasa KP125M's feature set from TP-Link's Tapo line for less per plug.

2-pack · $29.99Matter over Wi-FiEnergy monitoring + cost estimate15A / 1800W · ETL listedCompact — 2 per duplex

Product review

The Tapo P110M matches the top pick's core specification — Matter over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi plus energy monitoring — at a lower pack price: $29.99 for two in U.S. listings. It is compact enough that two fit in a duplex outlet, carries a 15 A / 1800 W rating with ETL listing, and adds overload protection and a Smart Charge Guard that cuts power when a charging device drops below a set draw. TP-Link is explicit that energy monitoring is not exposed over Matter yet, so usage graphs and bill estimates stay in the Tapo app even when the plug is controlled from Apple Home or Alexa.

Color Options

The company

TP-Link, founded in 1996 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, sells this plug under its Tapo brand alongside the Kasa line. It publishes U.S. support contacts — phone 1-866-225-8139 and email [email protected] — and runs Tapo and Kasa as separate apps, which households mixing the two lines should note.

Pros
  • Matter certification plus energy monitoring at $15 per plug in a two-pack.
  • Smart Charge Guard stops power when a device finishes charging.
  • Compact body leaves the second outlet usable, with overload protection built in.
Cons
  • TP-Link notes energy monitoring is not yet supported over Matter, so readings live in the Tapo app.
  • Motor loads are limited to 1/6 HP by the maker's own guidance, below its 15 A headline rating.
  • A newer model with a smaller long-term owner base than the Kasa line.

Shelly Plug US Gen4

AmRank Score 86 $25

Best for: Tinkerers and local-control households that want metering, scripting and no cloud dependency.

Single plugMatter · Wi-Fi 6 · ZigbeePower metering15A / 1800W3-year warranty

Product review

The Shelly Plug US Gen4 is the most capable plug here on paper: Matter certification, Wi-Fi 6, Zigbee and Bluetooth radios, and full power metering (voltage, current, power and energy) with scripting, MQTT and webhooks for local automation that does not depend on Shelly's cloud. It adds overheat, overvoltage, overcurrent and overpower protection, a built-in light sensor and a multicolor LED ring, in a 15 A / 1800 W body sold in white or black. Shelly's U.S. store lists a single plug at $24.99, and the three-year warranty is the longest in this ranking.

The company

Shelly USA is the U.S. arm of Shelly Group, the smart-relay maker whose products are known for local control, scripting and open APIs. It publishes consumer support contacts — phone 1-833-743-5591 and email [email protected] — and backs the Plug US Gen4 with a three-year warranty, the longest in this ranking.

Pros
  • Matter, Wi-Fi 6, Zigbee and Bluetooth in one plug, with local scripting and MQTT.
  • Full power metering plus over-voltage, over-current, over-power and overheat protection.
  • Three-year warranty and published U.S. support phone and email.
Cons
  • The current $24.99 U.S. store price sits above the $19.99 launch MSRP announced in December 2025.
  • Using it as a Zigbee device requires switching firmware modes, a step casual buyers will not expect.
  • Sold mainly through Shelly's own store, with thinner big-box retail presence than TP-Link or Leviton.

Best for: Buyers who want the cheapest single Matter plug from a major brand and do not need energy data.

Single plug · MSRPMatter over Wi-FiNo energy monitoring15A / 1800W · UL listedSmallest Tapo plug · 2-year warranty

Product review

The Tapo P125M is TP-Link's smallest Matter plug and its lowest-priced route into the standard: a $19.99 single-plug MSRP, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi with Bluetooth onboarding, a 15 A / 1800 W rating, UL listing and a body small enough that two fit side by side in one outlet. It works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, and reviewers found setup through the Matter code straightforward. What it does not do is measure energy — the hardware has no metering, which is the trade that separates it from the P110M ranked above it.

Pros
  • Lowest single-plug MSRP for a Matter-certified plug from a major brand.
  • Smallest body in the ranking; two fit in one duplex outlet.
  • Supports Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings over Matter.
Cons
  • No energy monitoring — a hardware limitation reviewers confirmed, not a missing app feature.
  • Street sales are dominated by multi-pack discounts, so the $19.99 single-plug MSRP is not always the price paid.
  • Runs in the Tapo app, separate from the Kasa app used by TP-Link's other line.

Emporia Energy Monitoring Smart Plug

AmRank Score 82 $12

Single plugWi-Fi · no MatterEnergy monitoring10A continuous / 15A peakETL certified

Product review

At $11.99 for a single plug on Emporia's own store, this is the cheapest energy-monitoring plug in the ranking, and the monitoring is the point: detailed consumption graphs in the Emporia app, plus integration with Emporia's Vue panel monitors, where the plug's load is separated out of a circuit's total. Emporia's store page bills it as a PC Magazine Editor's Choice. The compromises are platform and rating: it works with Alexa and Google Assistant only, there is no Matter or HomeKit support, and the rating is 10 A continuous with 15 A allowed only one hour per day.

Color Options
White

The company

Emporia Energy sells home energy monitors (the Vue panel systems) and EV chargers alongside this plug, and publishes U.S. support contacts — phone 1-844-367-6742 and email [email protected]. Reviewers note its app's graphing is a step above most plug makers' apps.

Pros
  • Lowest single-plug price here for a plug with real energy monitoring.
  • Detailed energy graphs and integration with Emporia Vue panel monitors.
  • Published support phone and email on the maker's own site.
Cons
  • Rated 10 A continuous (15 A for one hour a day), below the true 15 A continuous rating of rivals.
  • Alexa and Google Assistant only — no Apple Home, SmartThings or Matter support.
  • Cloud- and app-dependent control, and the status LED cannot be switched off.

Best for: Caséta households that need one weatherproof plug for landscape lighting, pumps or holiday displays.

Single outdoor plugIP65 · −4°F to 122°FCaséta Clear Connect15A · up to 1/2 HP motorsHub required for app/voice

Product review

The PD-15OUT-BL is the ranking's outdoor specialist: a sealed black polycarbonate plug on a short cord, rated IP65 on the device itself, for landscape lighting, pumps, motors up to 1/2 HP and holiday lights, with an operating range of −4°F to 122°F and a 15 A rating. It talks Lutron's Clear Connect radio rather than Wi-Fi, which owners rate as dependable, but every smart feature — app, schedules, Alexa, Google, Apple Home or Ring integration — runs through a Caséta Smart Hub. Best Buy lists the plug alone at $84.95; Home Depot's $94.95 kit adds a Pico remote.

Color Options

The company

Lutron, the Coopersburg, Pennsylvania lighting-controls company behind Caséta, publishes technical support at 1-800-523-9466 and staffs U.S. support around the clock according to retailer listings. The outdoor plug carries only a one-year limited warranty, short for its price class.

Pros
  • Purpose-built outdoor housing rated for rain, dust and sub-freezing temperatures.
  • Clear Connect radio avoids Wi-Fi congestion and is rated for 15 A loads and 1/2 HP motors.
  • Works with Alexa, Google, Apple Home and Ring through the Caséta hub.
Cons
  • At $84.95 it costs more than three of the top-ranked indoor plugs, with no energy monitoring.
  • App and voice control require a Caséta Smart Hub, sold separately.
  • One-year warranty is the shortest in this ranking despite the highest price.

Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Mini Plug-In Switch (D215P)

Best for: Buyers who prefer an established U.S. electrical brand and do not need Matter or energy data.

Single plug2.4 GHz Wi-Fi · no hubAlexa · Google · Apple Home15A / 1500WNo energy monitoring

Product review

Leviton's Decora Smart mini plug is the mainstream electrical brand's entry: a Wi-Fi plug that needs no hub, works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Home/Siri and SmartThings, and is slim enough that two stack in one receptacle. It is rated 15 A general use (1500 W incandescent) and can pair with Leviton's wire-free Anywhere Companion switch. It gives up energy monitoring entirely, and its Matter status depends on the exact variant — some current listings advertise Matter while the base 2nd-gen model's specification does not. A U.S. retailer lists it at $26.99; other channels run higher.

Color Options
White

The company

Leviton, the Melville, New York wiring-device manufacturer, runs a dedicated Decora Smart support operation and publishes its contacts — phone 1-800-824-3005 and email [email protected] — with the longest support hours of any maker in this ranking.

Pros
  • No hub required, with Alexa, Google and Apple Home support out of the box.
  • Slim body lets two plugs share one duplex receptacle.
  • Published Decora Smart support phone and email with extended hours.
Cons
  • No energy monitoring, and no Thread or Zigbee radio.
  • Matter status is murky: current retail listings claim it, while the 2nd-gen model's own spec lists Wi-Fi and HomeKit — verify the exact SKU.
  • At $26.99 it costs more than Matter plugs with energy monitoring ranked above it.

Philips Hue Smart Plug

AmRank Score 76 $40

Best for: Philips Hue households that want a lamp or appliance inside their Hue rooms and routines.

Single plugZigbee + BluetoothBridge for voice/remoteNo energy monitoring1800W max load

Product review

The Hue Smart Plug exists to fold a dumb lamp or small appliance into a Hue setup: it joins a Hue Bridge over Zigbee, appears in Hue rooms and scenes, and works with Alexa, Google and Apple Home through the bridge, with Bluetooth as a limited bridge-free fallback. It is compact, does not block the second outlet, and is rated to 1800 W. Beyond the Hue ecosystem the case weakens — at Signify's $39.99 there is no energy monitoring and no Matter radio in the plug itself, both of which cheaper plugs above it include.

Color Options
White

The company

Philips Hue is Signify's consumer smart-lighting brand, sold through Hue's own U.S. store and every major retailer. Signify handles support through the Hue website and app; no published U.S. support phone or email for the plug was verified for this ranking.

Pros
  • Seamless fit with Hue rooms, scenes and routines for lamps and appliances.
  • Doubles as a Zigbee router that extends the Hue mesh.
  • Compact body keeps the second outlet free.
Cons
  • $39.99 buys on/off control only — no energy monitoring and no native Matter radio in the plug.
  • Voice control and out-of-home access require a Hue Bridge; Bluetooth-only control is limited to 10 devices.
  • No published support phone or email was verified, unlike most makers here.

Amazon Smart Plug

AmRank Score 75 $25

Best for: Alexa-only homes that want the simplest possible setup and nothing else.

Single plugAlexa onlyWi-Fi · no hub requiredNo energy monitoringCompact — 2 per duplex

Product review

Amazon's own plug is a study in doing one thing easily: plug it in, and Alexa finds it — no hub, no separate app, with automatic reconnection after an outage. The compact body leaves the second outlet free and two can share a duplex. The limits are absolute, though: it works with Alexa and nothing else, it has no energy monitoring, and it predates Matter entirely. Its list price is $24.99, but Amazon discounts it so regularly — to about $13 in October 2026 sales — that the list price is best read as a ceiling.

Color Options
White

The company

Amazon sells the plug under its own name and supports it through Amazon account and help channels; it publishes no dedicated support email or phone number for the device. Its owner base is the largest here by a wide margin, with one product mirror citing more than 570,000 reviews.

Pros
  • The simplest Alexa setup in the category, with no hub or separate account.
  • Compact body; two plugs fit in one duplex outlet.
  • Very large owner base and Amazon's retail support behind it.
Cons
  • Alexa is the only platform — no Google, Apple Home, SmartThings or Matter support.
  • No energy monitoring on the plug; Alexa's energy dashboard covers estimated light usage only.
  • The $24.99 list price is discounted so often (about $13 during October 2026 sales) that it rarely reflects the transaction price.

Amazon Smart Plug

The verdict

The Kasa KP125M wins because it is the only plug here that pairs Matter certification with energy monitoring at a mainstream price — $39.99 for a two-pack at MSRP, routinely less on sale — in a body that leaves the second outlet free. It suits households that have not settled on a single platform, or that expect to switch platforms, and still want per-device energy data today. Buyers who only need the metering can save money with the Tapo P110M or the $11.99 Emporia; buyers committed to Thread should look at the Eve Energy.

Questions, answered

Do I need a hub for a Matter smart plug?

For Matter over Wi-Fi, no separate hub is required beyond a Matter controller app such as Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home or SmartThings. For Matter over Thread — the Eve Energy is the example here — you also need a Thread border router, which many current Apple TV, HomePod, Echo and SmartThings hubs already contain. Lutron's outdoor plug is the exception in this ranking: all of its smart features run through a Caseta Smart Hub.

Why does energy monitoring only show in the maker's app?

Matter's energy-reporting features arrived later than the plugs did. TP-Link states plainly that energy monitoring is not yet supported over Matter on the Tapo P110M, so readings, history and cost estimates live in the Tapo or Kasa app even when the plug is switched from Apple Home or Alexa. The same is true of Meross's MSS315, which we screened partly for that reason.

Can a smart plug run a space heater or a window air conditioner?

Only within its continuous rating. Most plugs here are rated 15 A / 1800 W resistive, which covers a typical 1500 W space heater, but motor loads are stricter — TP-Link limits the Tapo P110M to 1/6 HP motors — and the Emporia plug is rated 10 A continuous despite a 15 A peak figure. Check the maker's rating for the specific appliance, and do not run heating appliances unattended on any plug.

Will a smart plug block the other outlet?

The compact models in this ranking — both TP-Link plugs, the Shelly, the Leviton, the Philips Hue and the Amazon plug — are designed so two fit in one duplex outlet. Oversized plugs are a real failure mode: the Aqara plug we screened cannot share a duplex with a second plug, and IKEA's own reviewers say the same about the INSPELNING.

What happens to my plugs if the maker shuts down its cloud?

It depends on the protocol. Plugs controlled locally over Matter or Thread keep working on your home network even if the maker's servers disappear. Cloud-dependent plugs are exposed: when Belkin ended Wemo cloud services on January 31, 2026, most Wemo models lost remote control and voice-assistant integration. We weight that risk in the accountability quarter of the score.
