The verdict
The Coop Ultra-Tech takes #1: it holds the strongest independent spill record in the category, a 100-night trial almost no rival offers, and owner ratings to match — at $59 it is the protector to buy if you buy one. Purple's Waterproof protector is our AmRank Top Pick: its TPU build is the quietest premium option here, with a 10-year warranty and a real support line behind it. The Buck Blazer goes to the SafeRest Premium at $30 — the proven budget build with a 10-year full-replacement warranty and the deepest owner record in the field. And the Buck4Buck is the SureGuard Premium Fitted: GREENGUARD Gold certified, warranted for 10 years and about $37, the most protector per dollar in the ranking. Organic shoppers get two genuinely certified choices, Avocado at #4 and Naturepedic at #5. The famous name finishes last: Tempur-Pedic's $229 TEMPUR-Protect carries the weakest owner rating of the ten.
Questions, answered
Does a mattress stain really void my mattress warranty?
Usually, yes. Most mattress warranties exclude stains, and a stain is the most common reason claims are denied — which makes a $30–$60 protector the cheapest warranty protection you can buy. Keep the protector's receipt with the mattress paperwork: if a leak ever does get through, the receipt and photos are what a claim, with the mattress maker or the protector brand, will ask for.
Will a protector change how my mattress feels?
The good ones don't. Cotton-terry and TPU protectors — the SafeRest, the Purple, the SureGuard — test as feel-neutral and noiseless under a fitted sheet. What changes feel is thickness and plastic: padded protectors and anything vinyl will alter the surface and announce themselves with crinkling. If you paid for a specific mattress feel, choose a thin terry or TPU model and skip pads.
Do waterproof protectors sleep hot?
The membrane is the heat variable, not the brand. Polyurethane laminates trap the most warmth, TPU runs cooler and thinner, and 'cooling' tops treat the surface rather than the physics. Hot sleepers should start with a TPU model like the Purple or Casper, keep the protector under a breathable sheet, and be skeptical of any protector that promises to be both fully waterproof and cool — the barrier always costs some airflow.
Fitted protector or zippered encasement — which do I need?
For spills, sweat and everyday allergens, a fitted protector is enough and far easier to wash. Bed bugs are the exception: only a zippered encasement that seals the mattress on all six sides can trap or exclude them, and it takes two people to install. If bed bugs are the actual problem, buy the encasement from a ranked brand here (SafeRest and SureGuard both sell one) — a fitted protector cannot do that job.
How do I wash a protector without ruining it?
Every one to two months, machine wash warm with your sheets and tumble dry on LOW. Heat and bleach are the two warranty-killers across nearly every brand in this ranking: high dryer heat delaminates polyurethane membranes — the brown scorch marks owners report are the membrane cooking against the drum — and bleach voids most warranties outright. Dry it with towels to keep it from balling up, and never iron it.
Will a protector fix my dust-mite allergy?
It helps, with limits. A waterproof membrane physically blocks mites and their allergens from colonizing the mattress, and a washable surface removes what collects on top — that is a real reduction in exposure where you sleep. But a fitted protector does not seal the mattress the way an encasement does, and it does nothing for mites already living in pillows and bedding. Treat it as one layer of an allergy routine, not a cure.
