Editorial Standards

These standards are how the Institute keeps its motto — Optima Sine Favore, Latin for “the best, without favor” (pronounced OP-tee-mah SEE-neh fah-VOH-reh). “Best” is defined by published category criteria, commercial relationships are disclosed, and paid placements are kept separate from ranking decisions. Underneath them sit three principles: pure meritocracy, absolute impartiality, and objectivity — places earned on evidence alone, no product favored, and no outside pressure or financial incentive moving an outcome.

  • Evidence first. Specifications are verified against manufacturer documentation; inflated claims are discounted in scoring.
  • Companies are graded, not just products. Support reachability and warranty practice are checked directly.
  • No pay-to-rank. No brand can buy inclusion, position, score or an award. Any paid placement on this site is labeled advertising and plays no part in ranking decisions.
  • Corrections are public. Material changes to a ranking are logged on the page with dates.
  • Conflicts are disclosed. Any relationship that could appear to affect coverage is stated on the page.
  • Short lists. Top 10 per subcategory, Top 30 per department — ceilings that force choices.
From evidence to published ranking
Step 1
Research
Claims and specifications gathered from primary sources — manufacturer documentation first.
Step 2
Photo & link verification
Every product photo matched to the real product; every buy link opened and checked.
Step 3
Scoring
The published model, weights fixed per category before the ranking is built.
Step 4
Publish gate
Nothing ships until the checks pass — a failed check sends the page back.

The same four steps stand behind every ranking on this site.
