Best Smart Thermostats — Top 10

A smart thermostat purchase is mostly a wiring and compatibility decision disguised as a gadget decision. The right model has to match your equipment — conventional furnace, heat pump with auxiliary heat, boiler, or line-voltage electric heat — handle your home's C-wire situation honestly, and sense temperature in the rooms you actually occupy, not just the hallway. Learning algorithms and scheduling quality decide most of what is left: a schedule you trust, or one the thermostat builds itself, is where the energy savings come from.

We screened about twenty current US models and ranked ten on HVAC compatibility breadth, remote-sensor systems and scheduling quality first, then owner satisfaction, value, and company accountability — warranty length, published support contacts, and platform longevity, including the verifiable fact that Google ended remote app support for its 1st- and 2nd-generation Nest Learning Thermostats in October 2025. Line-voltage and mini-split controllers were eligible where they are broadly sold in the US; one line-voltage model made the ranking on merit.

Aqara Thermostat Hub W200
A promising Matter hub-thermostat with mmWave presence sensing and Apple Adaptive Temperature support, but it is a new US entrant with a one-year warranty, a C-wire adapter sold separately, and almost no US owner history to judge HVAC reliability by — just below the ranked cut.
Aqara$16075
Honeywell Home X2S Smart Thermostat
Matter-certified and cheap, with flexible scheduling and a two-year warranty, but it is limited to 2 heat / 2 cool, requires a C-wire, has no room-sensor system, and is strictly out-featured by the Amazon thermostat at the same price and by the X8S above it.
Honeywell Home$8074
Sensi Smart Thermostat (ST55)
The long-running Sensi value pick — no C-wire for most systems and a three-year warranty — but it has an LED (not touchscreen) display, no room-sensor support and no humidity control, so the Touch 2 owns the Sensi slot.
Sensi$13073
GE Cync Smart Thermostat
A competent schedule-based thermostat with an included power extender kit and optional room sensors, but independent coverage notes it is not ENERGY STAR certified and does no learning or occupancy automation, which caps it below the Essential and Nest at similar money.
GE Lighting (Cync)$12072
Sensi Lite Smart Thermostat (ST25)
Copeland's budget Sensi keeps geofencing, scheduling and a three-year warranty, but drops humidity control and room sensors entirely; the Amazon thermostat undercuts it on price with a larger platform behind it.
Sensi$9071
Sensi Touch Smart Thermostat (ST75)
The first-generation Touch is superseded by the Touch 2 at a $40 higher list price with sensor support and a thinner profile; buying the older model new today only makes sense on a steep discount.
Sensi$17070
Honeywell Home Smart Color Thermostat (RTH9585WF)
A capable older colour-touchscreen model, but it predates Resideo's current sensor and Matter lines, has no remote room sensor in the standard box, and is dominated by the T9 and X8S at nearby prices.
Honeywell Home$18069
Cielo Breez Eco Smart AC Controller
The mini-split case: an infrared controller that makes ductless and window units app- and voice-controllable with scheduling and geofencing, but it is not a thermostat wired to the equipment, has no on-device display, and depends on line-of-sight IR — a useful retrofit that sits below a true thermostat ranking's cut. Price is the maker's list figure; see dossier flag.
Cielo$9968
Mysa Smart Thermostat LITE for Electric Baseboard Heaters
The cheaper line-voltage Mysa keeps HomeKit, Alexa and Google control, but drops the V2's energy charting and humidity sensing — the two features that justify paying per-zone prices — so the V2 owns the baseboard slot.
Mysa$9967
Wyze Thermostat
Cut on availability as much as merit: Wyze's own store listed the thermostat as sold out at check time, it was never ENERGY STAR certified in the evidence we found, and its room-sensor ecosystem is thin compared with every ranked budget pick.
Wyze$8066

ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium

AmRank Score 91 $260

Best for: Households that want the broadest platform support, a room sensor in the box, and air-quality monitoring from one thermostat.

24V · >95% of systems*SmartSensor includedAir quality monitor3-year warrantyPEK included for no C-wire

Product review

The Premium is the most complete 24V thermostat we screened: ecobee states compatibility with over 95% of HVAC systems, a SmartSensor is included in the standard box, and radar occupancy sensing, an indoor air-quality monitor and a choice of Siri or Alexa built in are built into the unit itself rather than sold as add-ons. Its eco+ scheduling is schedule-based rather than self-learning, which many households will find more predictable, and the three-year warranty and included Power Extender Kit make the no-C-wire case honest instead of aspirational.

The company

ecobee, now ecobee by Generac, is a Toronto-founded smart-thermostat maker that publishes a US support line (1-877-932-6233), backs its thermostats with a three-year limited warranty, and has kept its current app and eco+ platform in active sale and update.

Pros
  • SmartSensor included in the box for hot- and cold-spot rooms
  • Works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings
  • Power Extender Kit included for homes without a C-wire
Cons
  • No Matter support on this model despite a Thread radio noted at launch
  • Best security features sit behind an optional Smart Security subscription
  • Priciest ecobee; the Enhanced covers most homes for $60 less

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)

AmRank Score 89 $280

Best for: Google Home households that want a schedule that builds itself and a thermostat that works in most homes without a C-wire.

24V · most systemsSensor (2nd gen) included2.7-in 600×600 display2-year warrantyMatter · works w/o C-wire*

Product review

The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat is the strongest self-learning option here: Google's Smart Schedule builds and suggests tweaks from how the home is actually used, a second-generation Nest Temperature Sensor is included in the standard box, and Google states it is designed to work with or without a C-wire, with a power connector needed in under 1% of cases. Its 2.7-inch borderless display and Soli presence sensing are the best hardware in the field; it ranks second because its warranty is shorter and its ecosystem is Google-first.

The company

Google sells Nest thermostats through the Google Store with a published two-year retail warranty for this model. Accountability is dented by a verifiable platform fact: Google ended remote app support for 1st- and 2nd-generation Nest Learning Thermostats on October 25, 2025, leaving those units manual-only.

Pros
  • Self-learning Smart Schedule plus Adaptive Eco away temperatures
  • Included room sensor; supports up to six sensors
  • Matter support and a C-wire-free design for most homes
Cons
  • Google Home app is required for setup; no Apple Home control except through Matter
  • Two-year warranty trails ecobee and Sensi at three years
  • Google has ended app support for older Nest generations before (see company note)

ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced

AmRank Score 86 $200

Best for: Most 24V homes that want ecobee's scheduling, radar occupancy sensing and reports without paying for a speaker or air sensor.

24V · most systemsRadar occupancy sensingSensors sold separately3-year warrantyPEK included for no C-wire

Product review

The Enhanced keeps the parts of the Premium most homes use — the larger touchscreen, radar occupancy sensing, eco+ schedule help, humidity-aware comfort and the included Power Extender Kit — and drops the speaker, air-quality monitor and bundled sensor to reach $199.99. ecobee rates it at up to 26% heating and cooling savings against a 72°F hold, the same headline figure as the Premium. It is the sensible default ecobee; it ranks below the flagship only because uneven-room comfort requires buying SmartSensors separately.

The company

ecobee, now ecobee by Generac, publishes a US support line (1-877-932-6233) and covers the Enhanced with the same three-year limited warranty as the Premium. Its app, eco+ features and Home Energy Reports are shared across the current ecobee line.

Pros
  • Same eco+ scheduling and energy reports as the Premium
  • Radar occupancy sensing built in, with no subscription for core features
  • Three-year warranty and PEK included in the box
Cons
  • No room sensor in the box — the fix for uneven rooms costs extra
  • No built-in voice assistant or air-quality monitor
  • No Matter support on this model

#4

Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat with Sensor

AmRank Score 84 $210

Best for: Multi-room homes with a hot or cold spot that want sensor prioritization and a C-wire adapter included, from a traditional thermostat brand.

24V · up to 3H/2CSmart Room Sensor includedC-wire adapter included2-year warrantyENERGY STAR certified

Product review

The T9's case is its sensor system: one Smart Room Sensor is included in the standard with-sensor box, sensors report temperature, humidity and occupancy, and the thermostat can prioritize occupied rooms or average selected rooms on a schedule. Resideo's published specs list up to 3 heat / 2 cool stages, dual-band Wi-Fi, a C-wire adapter in the box and a two-year warranty. It is a proven, plain-spoken design; a shorter warranty and the maker's own direct-store status keep it below the ecobee pair.

The company

Honeywell Home thermostats are made and supported by Resideo, which publishes technical support at 1-800-633-3991 on honeywellhome.com. The T9 carries a two-year warranty in Resideo's published specifications for the model.

Pros
  • Included sensor prioritizes the rooms actually in use
  • C-wire adapter included; dual-band Wi-Fi
  • Broad stage support for conventional and heat-pump systems
Cons
  • Maker's own store listed this model as no longer available for sale at check time — retail stock is the buying route (see dossier flag)
  • No self-learning; comfort is schedule- and geofence-based
  • Does not control humidifiers, dehumidifiers or ventilators the way the pro T10+ line does

Sensi Touch 2 Smart Thermostat (ST76)

Best for: Buyers who want a large colour touchscreen, free HVAC alerts and no subscription — and who already have a C-wire.

24V · conventional + heat pump4.3-in colour touchscreenRoom sensors optional3-year warrantyC-wire required (all systems)

Product review

The Touch 2 is the traditional-thermostat answer to ecobee and Nest: a 4.3-inch glass touchscreen in a familiar footprint, flexible seven-day scheduling, geofencing, humidity control and HVAC alerts for high or low temperature and humidity, all without a subscription. Copeland lists an MSRP of $209.99, ENERGY STAR certification and support for optional Sensi room sensors (up to 15 in Copeland materials). It gives ground on platform breadth — no Apple Home or Matter — and on its hard C-wire requirement, stated plainly in Copeland's own comparison table.

The company

Sensi is Copeland's thermostat brand (formerly Emerson Sensi), built on a long US HVAC-controls history. Copeland publishes Sensi support at 1-888-605-7131 and [email protected], and the Touch 2 carries a three-year warranty with a stated policy of not selling personal data.

Pros
  • Three-year warranty and published phone and email support
  • Free smart alerts and usage reports; no subscription tier
  • Large touchscreen that works like a conventional thermostat on the wall
Cons
  • C-wire is required for every system — there is no power-sharing workaround in the box
  • No Apple Home or Matter support; Alexa, Google and SmartThings only
  • Room sensors are an extra purchase and the sensor system is smaller than ecobee's or Honeywell's

Honeywell Home X8S Smart Thermostat

AmRank Score 82 $220

Best for: Buyers who want Resideo's newest flagship — a big customizable display, radar presence sensing and Matter — and accept a short owner record.

24V · up to 3H/4C conv.5-in customizable displayMatter certified2-year warrantyC-wire required

Product review

The X8S is Resideo's reset of its flagship: a 5-inch customizable touchscreen, onboard radar occupancy sensing, humidity and ventilation control for indoor air quality, Matter certification, and viewing for compatible video doorbells on the thermostat itself. Resideo's specs list up to 4 heat / 2 cool heat-pump or 3 heat / 4 cool conventional staging, dual-band Wi-Fi and a C-wire requirement. On paper it out-features the T9; it ranks just below it because, as a newly launched model, it has far less owner history to judge reliability by.

The company

Honeywell Home thermostats are made and supported by Resideo, which publishes technical support at 1-800-633-3991 and launched the X8S as its current flagship retail thermostat at a $219.99 US MSRP. The model carries a two-year limited warranty in Resideo's published specifications.

Pros
  • Matter certified, with Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple Home control
  • Largest display in the ranking and radar presence detection
  • ENERGY STAR certified with monthly energy reports
Cons
  • New model with a thin owner-review record compared with the T9 or ecobee line
  • Room sensors are sold separately on the $219.99 basis unit
  • Video-doorbell viewing only works with First Alert VX1 and Ring doorbells

#7The Buck4Buck — best value in this category, American Ranking Institute award badge

ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential

AmRank Score 81 $140

Best for: Budget buyers who want ecobee's app, reports and three-year warranty in a simple schedule-based thermostat.

24V · most systemsFull-colour touchscreenSensors sold separately3-year warrantyPEK sold separately

Product review

The Essential is ecobee stripped to the essentials that matter: a full-colour touchscreen, schedule-based eco+ savings (ecobee claims up to 23% against a 72°F hold for this model), app control, energy reports and compatibility with SmartSensors bought later. At $139.99 with a three-year warranty it is strong value. The honest costs are in the box contents: there is no Power Extender Kit and no sensor included, so a home without a C-wire or with uneven rooms will spend more before it matches the Enhanced.

Color Options

The company

ecobee, now ecobee by Generac, publishes a US support line (1-877-932-6233) and covers the Essential with a three-year limited warranty, the longest warranty at this price in the ranking. Support and software updates are shared with the rest of the current ecobee line.

Pros
  • Lowest-priced way into ecobee's app, reports and eco+ scheduling
  • Three-year warranty — best accountability at this price
  • Works with Apple Home, Alexa and Google Assistant
Cons
  • Power Extender Kit is sold separately ($24.99) — unlike the Enhanced and Premium
  • No built-in occupancy sensing; eco+ occupancy features need a SmartSensor (sold separately)
  • No voice assistant, air-quality monitor or radar sensing

Google Nest Thermostat

AmRank Score 79 $130

Best for: Google Home beginners who want a simple, inexpensive thermostat with presence sensing and app scheduling.

24V · most systemsSoli presence sensingSensors sold separately1-year warrantyC-wire often required*

Product review

The 2020 Nest Thermostat is the simple Google option: a mirrored display with swipe-and-tap side controls, Soli presence sensing for Home/Away routines, Quick Schedule presets in the Google Home app and HVAC monitoring alerts, in four finishes. It does not learn, it does not include a room sensor, and Google's own materials note many systems need a C-wire or a Nest Power Connector. At $129.99 it is fairly priced for what it is; the one-year warranty and battery-powered design hold its accountability score down.

Color Options
SnowSandFogCharcoal

The company

Google sells the Nest Thermostat through the Google Store with a published one-year standard warranty for this model, the shortest in this ranking. Platform accountability is mixed for the same reason as its sibling: Google ended remote app support for the oldest Nest Learning generations in October 2025.

Pros
  • Lowest-priced Google thermostat, in four finishes
  • Presence sensing and HVAC monitoring alerts included
  • ENERGY STAR certified with Savings Finder suggestions in the app
Cons
  • One-year warranty is the shortest here
  • No learning; schedules are set manually in the Google Home app
  • Many homes need a C-wire or the separate Nest Power Connector, and it runs on replaceable AAA batteries

Amazon Smart Thermostat

AmRank Score 77 $80

Best for: Alexa households that want the cheapest ENERGY STAR smart thermostat from a major platform and are comfortable in one app.

24V · most systemsAlexa + Ring app controlNo room sensor included1-year warrantyC-wire / adapter required

Product review

At $79.99 the Amazon Smart Thermostat is the price floor for a major-platform, ENERGY STAR certified thermostat: schedules and Hunches-based automatic adjustments in the Alexa app, an energy dashboard, and control through the Ring app as well. The limits are structural and stated on its own spec pages — a C-wire or adapter kit is required, voice control needs a separate Alexa device, and there is no path into Google, Apple or Matter ecosystems. For an all-Alexa home with a C-wire, that trade is reasonable; for anyone else it is a lock-in discount.

Color Options

The company

Amazon's thermostat is built with Honeywell Home thermostat technology and sold and supported by Amazon, with a one-year limited warranty published in its Ring/Amazon product specifications. Amazon publishes no separate support phone or email for the device; support runs through Amazon's device help channels.

Pros
  • Cheapest ranked thermostat, and ENERGY STAR certified
  • Alexa Hunches can automate home, away and sleep temperatures
  • Guided installation in the Alexa app with 24/7 Amazon customer service noted by the maker
Cons
  • Alexa-only ecosystem — no Google Home, Apple Home or Matter control
  • C-wire or a separately sold adapter kit is required
  • No dedicated room sensor; comfort zones depend on owning select Echo devices or an Amazon air-quality monitor

Mysa Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heaters V2 product photo
#10

Mysa Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heaters V2

AmRank Score 76 $159

Best for: Homes with electric baseboard, fan-forced or radiant-ceiling heat that no 24V thermostat in this ranking can control.

Line voltage 120–240VUp to 3,800W at 240VEnergy charting in app5-year warranty4-wire install required

Product review

The Mysa V2 is ranked for a job the other nine cannot do: direct control of 120–240V electric baseboard, fan-forced and radiant-ceiling heaters, up to 3,800W at 240V, with scheduling, geofencing and per-zone energy charting in a free app. Mysa claims up to 26% savings for this model and includes temperature and humidity sensing, with HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home control. It is a single-zone, heat-only device, so its score reflects a narrower job done well — and a five-year warranty that leads the field.

Color Options
White

The company

Mysa (Empowered Homes) is a Canadian maker focused on electric heating controls, selling direct in the US through getmysa.com. It publishes support by email at [email protected], states North America-based support seven days a week on its product pages, and backs the V2 with a five-year limited warranty — the longest in this ranking.

Pros
  • The only ranked option for line-voltage electric heat
  • Five-year warranty and energy-use charting per zone
  • Works with Apple HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home with no subscription
Cons
  • Heat only — it does not cool, and it cannot control a 24V furnace or heat pump
  • One unit per zone: a multi-room baseboard home needs several, so system cost multiplies
  • Requires four wires in the box; two-wire mechanical replacements need new wiring

Mysa Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heaters V2

The verdict

The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium wins because it is the only ranked thermostat that combines broad 24V compatibility, a room sensor in the box, radar occupancy sensing and air-quality monitoring with a three-year warranty, an included C-wire solution and support for Apple Home, Alexa, Google and SmartThings at once — it fits the most homes with the fewest compromises. It is the pick for households with uneven rooms or mixed smart-home platforms. Google-first homes that want a self-built schedule should take the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), and electric-baseboard homes should skip both and buy the Mysa V2, the only model here wired for their heat.

Questions, answered

Do I need a C-wire?

It depends on the model, and the ranking states it per product. ecobee's Premium and Enhanced include a Power Extender Kit for homes without one (the Essential sells it separately for $24.99); the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is designed to work without one in most homes; the Sensi Touch 2, Honeywell X8S and Amazon Smart Thermostat require a C-wire or a separately sold adapter. Check your current thermostat for a wire on the C terminal before ordering anything.

What do remote room sensors actually fix?

A thermostat only knows the temperature where it is mounted, often a hallway. A sensor in a bedroom or living room lets the system heat or cool to that room, or average several rooms. Three ranked models include one sensor in the standard box — ecobee Premium, Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Honeywell T9 — which is why the price basis in this ranking counts bundled sensors and says so.

Can a smart thermostat control electric baseboard heaters?

Not the 24V models. Baseboards run on line voltage (120–240V), and wiring a low-voltage thermostat to them is unsafe and will not work. That job needs a line-voltage thermostat such as the ranked Mysa V2, one per heating zone. Mini-split and window units are a different case again: they are usually controlled by infrared controllers such as the screened Cielo Breez Eco, not by a wall thermostat.

Does Matter matter for a thermostat?

For longevity, yes, at the margin. Matter models here — the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) and Honeywell X8S — can be controlled from several major platforms, so a platform change does not orphan the device. Most ecobee and Sensi models instead connect natively to specific ecosystems (Apple Home, Alexa, Google, SmartThings), which works well today but ties the thermostat to those integrations.

How much can a smart thermostat actually save?

ENERGY STAR's published estimate for certified models is roughly 8% of heating and cooling costs, about $50 a year for a typical home. Maker claims in this ranking run higher — ecobee claims up to 26% against holding 72°F, and Sensi about 23% — because they compare against a constant hold rather than a programmed schedule. Budget on the ENERGY STAR figure and treat anything above it as a bonus that depends on how badly the old thermostat was set.
