Best Dog Crates 2026 — Top 10

A dog crate is three different products wearing one name: a house-training and home crate, a vehicle kennel whose job is surviving a crash, and a travel shelter whose job is packing flat. The ten crates ranked here span all three, plus the furniture and high-anxiety specialists, and every one is scored in a single stated size — most in the 36-inch or Intermediate class for a medium-large dog — because a crate's sizes differ enough in price, weight and interior room that blending them would mislead. Every specification, warranty term and latch claim was checked against that model's own manufacturer page or warranty document.

The spread is wide and honest: from a $61.93 folding wire crate to a $1,249.99 aluminum containment crate, with two independently crash-certified kennels between them. What separates the field is door and latch design, how honestly interior dimensions are stated, what the warranty actually covers — one maker guarantees against dog damage itself, the largest wire maker's warranty expressly excludes it — and whether support is published at all. Where a maker's own documents conflict, or no Amazon owner aggregate for the ranked configuration could be isolated, the notes say so and the score reflects the uncertainty rather than borrowing another product's stars.

Diggs' flagship collapsible crate held a ranked slot until the maker's own store showed every size sold out pending a redesign announced for December 2026; a crate that cannot be bought today cannot hold a ranked slot, so it moves to the screened pool until stock returns.
Diggs$1,14980
MidWest Homes for Pets LifeStages Double Door Crate — 36″
Heavier than the iCrate and a sound home crate, but the ranked Ultima Pro covers the heavy-wire role and the iCrate covers value; it was also not buyable new in the ranked double-door configuration at deploy time — its Amazon listing showed no new featured offer — so it stays in the screened pool.
MidWest Homes for Pets$9575

Crashtest 5-Star, Center for Pet Safety (Intermediate)
Interior30 x 18 x 25 in, dogs to 70 lb
ConstructionDouble-wall rotomolded, 48 lb
DoorWelded aluminum frame, steel-reinforced
ColorsGunner GreenBlackTan
Strengths
  • 5-Star Center for Pet Safety crash certification on the ranked Intermediate size itself, not a sibling size
  • Double-wall rotomolded construction gives impact protection and insulation a single wall cannot
  • Lifetime warranty to the original owner — the strongest accountability term among travel kennels here
Watch out
  • At 48 lb empty, moving it between vehicles is a two-handed job and awkward for one person on a tailgate
  • The double wall that protects in a crash also narrows the interior — a broad 70 lb dog has less turning room than the exterior suggests
  • At $700 for the Intermediate it costs roughly twice a comparable single-wall travel kennel
Product review

The G1 Intermediate is the only double-walled kennel on the market and the only crate in this ranking whose ranked size carries a 5-Star crash-test certification from the Center for Pet Safety, earned by the Small, Medium and Intermediate sizes. Its interior measures 30 by 18 by 25 inches for dogs up to 70 lb, the door frame is welded aluminum, and four steel tie-down points anchor it in a vehicle. Gunner builds it in America and backs it with a lifetime warranty to the original owner, with chew damage excluded.

The company

Gunner is a US company based in Nashville, Tennessee, building kennels in America and selling direct and through sporting retailers. The maker publishes a lifetime warranty to the original owner for the G1; no US support phone or email was published on the maker's own product pages captured this pass, so both fields are blank rather than guessed.

ColorsWhite
Strengths
  • 5-Star crash certification at a lower price and weight than the double-wall alternative
  • Reversible door flips in seconds, so the opening side can match the vehicle layout
  • Lifetime warranty published by the maker
Watch out
  • Only two sizes exist, so a dog between sizes or over the Large's fit has no option in this line
  • The single wall is lighter but gives up the insulation and second impact layer of a double-wall design on winter and summer drives
  • Interior height of 22 inches is tight for a tall dog who sits upright on long trips
Product review

The Lucky Kennel Intermediate carries the same 5-Star Center for Pet Safety crash certification as the category leader, in a one-piece rotomolded body that weighs 38 lb — ten pounds lighter — and costs about $100 less. The interior measures 30.25 by 20.5 by 22 inches, the injection-molded door reverses in seconds for left- or right-hand opening, and powder-coated tie-downs with corner locking pins are built in. Lucky Duck builds it in the USA and covers it with a lifetime warranty.

Size34 in length, 63 lb
ConstructionAluminum, 62% thicker alloy
DoorPaddle latch plus four butterfly latches
VentilationSmall round holes, tooth-safe spacing
ColorsBlackGray
Strengths
  • Five latching points and thicker alloy are engineered specifically for escape and panic behavior
  • 10-year Dog Damage Guarantee replaces damaged parts or the crate itself
  • Small ventilation holes remove the tooth-holds that let anxious dogs injure themselves on wire
Watch out
  • It does not collapse, so storing it between uses means giving up a full crate-sized footprint permanently
  • At 63 lb in the 34-inch size it is effectively a two-person lift for loading into a vehicle
  • The maker confirms this model has not been crash tested, so it is a containment purchase, not a vehicle-safety purchase
Product review

The High Anxiety crate is built for the narrow job of containing a dog that has already defeated lesser crates: aluminum alloy 62 percent thicker than the maker's standard crates, a zinc-steel paddle latch backed by four butterfly latches, and small round ventilation holes a dog cannot get teeth or snout into. The 34-inch size weighs 63 lb and does not fold. Impact backs it with a 10-year Dog Damage Guarantee — free replacement parts or a replacement crate if the dog damages it into malfunction — and is explicit that the model is not crash tested.

The company

Impact Dog Crates is a US company in Hayden, Idaho, building aluminum crates and selling direct. Its High Anxiety line carries a published 10-year Dog Damage Guarantee under which damaged parts, or the crate itself, are replaced free; no US support phone or email was published on the maker's own pages captured this pass, so both fields are blank.

Strengths
  • Heaviest wire gauge in the maker's line, aimed at strong dogs and professional handlers
  • Folds flat with no tools and carries with included handles despite the gauge
  • Divider panel lets one purchase cover puppyhood through adult size
Watch out
  • The one-year warranty expressly excludes damage caused by the animal, so a determined chewer's bent wires are the owner's cost
  • It folds, but the heavy gauge makes the folded package the heaviest wire crate in this ranking to carry
  • Two latches per door slow every entry and exit compared with a single-latch home crate
Product review

The Ultima Pro is MidWest's strongest folding wire crate, built from 7- and 9-gauge professional steel — the heaviest wire the maker sells — with two doors, each secured by dual slide-bolt latches, and removable doors that come off without tools. The 36-inch model includes a divider panel for raising a puppy into the full size and a leak-proof pan. MidWest publishes a one-year limited warranty and is candid that it does not cover damage caused by the animal itself.

The company

MidWest Homes for Pets is a US company based in Muncie, Indiana, and the largest American maker of wire crates, selling through every major pet retailer. Its warranty document gives the Ultima Pro one year against defects in workmanship and materials and states that animal-caused damage is not covered; support runs through its Indiana-based customer care team, and no support phone was printed in the documents captured this pass, so that field is blank.

Strengths
  • About 20 lb — half the weight of certified travel kennels — so one person loads it easily
  • One-piece body has no seams or trays to trap waste and hoses clean in minutes
  • The most affordable rotomolded travel kennel in this ranking
Watch out
  • It is not crash certified — the maker's earlier generation was tested and the current one was not retested, per the maker's own test history
  • Dealer listings show recurring multi-week backorders, so the size and door layout wanted may not ship promptly
  • Composite doors and handles are excluded from the strongest warranty wording published by its dealers
Product review

The Ruff Land Intermediate is the light option among rotomolded travel kennels: a one-piece body of about 20 lb with a 30 by 19.5 by 22 inch interior that rinses clean and stacks for multi-dog households. It is a field kennel, not a certified safety device — the current generation carries no crash certification. Warranty terms published across the maker's dealer network conflict between lifetime, five-year and one-year wording, and AmRank prints no term for this product until the maker's own current document settles it; the conflict is flagged in the research dossier.

The company

Ruff Land Performance Kennels is a US maker selling through authorized sporting dealers. Published warranty terms conflict across its own dealer network — lifetime on the kennel body in some dealer-published terms, five years in Gen II dealer listings, one year elsewhere — so this fragment prints no term and the dossier flags the conflict for adjudication. No support phone or email was published on the maker's own pages captured this pass, so both fields are blank.

Strengths
  • Keyed locking paddle latch is the strongest door security among the rotomolded kennels here
  • One-piece body with a drain hole is the easiest travel kennel here to clean after a muddy hunt
  • Limited lifetime warranty on current purchases, published in the maker's own FAQ
Watch out
  • The maker has done internal drop and impact testing but publishes no independent crash certification for this kennel
  • At roughly 44 lb in Large it is heavy to move daily between house and vehicle
  • The warranty's lifetime term applies only to purchases after May 1, 2025 — an earlier purchase carries one year
Product review

The G3 Framed Door kennel is a single roto-molded piece of military-grade polyethylene with a powder-coated steel framed door and a keyed paddle latch that locks — a real containment step up from friction latches for a dog left in a vehicle or camp. The Large exterior runs about 35 by 24 by 26.25 inches, a drain hole allows hose-out cleaning, and Dakota 283 publishes internal impact and 25-foot drop testing rather than an independent crash rating. Kennels bought after May 1, 2025 carry the maker's limited lifetime warranty.

The company

Dakota 283 is a US maker molding and assembling its kennels in Lake City, Pennsylvania. Its own FAQ states that kennels purchased after May 1, 2025 carry a limited lifetime warranty (one year before that date) and that the company does not guarantee containment of overly aggressive dogs; no support phone or email was published on the maker's own pages captured this pass, so both fields are blank.

Strengths
  • Divider, tray and two doors included at the lowest price of any wire crate ranked
  • Folds flat in seconds for storage or car transport
  • A current, deep Amazon owner base for the exact 36-inch double-door configuration
Watch out
  • The lighter wire flexes under a determined adult dog's pawing — it is a training crate, not a containment crate for escape behavior
  • The slide-bolt latches are single-point per door on this line, easier for a clever dog to work than dual-latch doors
  • The included tray can crack under heavy impact and becomes a replacement purchase
Product review

The iCrate 36-inch double-door is the default first crate in America for a reason: it folds flat without tools, includes the divider panel that lets it grow with a puppy from crate training to its full 36 by 23 by 25 inch size for dogs of 41 to 70 lb, and adds a leak-proof tray and floor-protecting feet. Its wire is lighter than the heavy-gauge lines ranked above it, which is the honest trade for its price. MidWest records a one-year manufacturer warranty on the listing.

Strengths
  • Handmade bentwood build reads as furniture and serves as a side table
  • Sliding gate needs no swing clearance in a tight room
  • Ventilation windows on three sides keep airflow without wire-cage sightlines
Watch out
  • A sizing mistake cannot be fixed: the maker publishes a no-refund policy on a purchase of this size
  • Wood is the wrong material for any dog that chews when bored or anxious — the maker itself says so
  • The one-year warranty is short cover for a handmade furniture purchase, and finish and gate choices move the price by hundreds of dollars — the acrylic-gate Medium configuration ranked here is $1,399
Product review

The Fable Crate is a handmade bentwood enclosure with a sliding gate in metal or acrylic, square ventilation windows on three sides, and a top surface that works as a side table — the furniture crate for a calm, fully crate-trained dog. The Medium exterior runs about 34 by 24 by 25 inches for dogs up to 50 lb. The accountability picture is the weakest in this ranking and is stated plainly: Fable publishes a no-refund policy and a one-year limited warranty, and the maker itself warns against the crate for dogs with destructive chewing tendencies.

The company

Fable is a US pet-design company selling its handmade bentwood crates direct. The maker publishes a no-refund policy on the crate and states plainly that it is not recommended for dogs with serious chewing or destructive tendencies; the maker publishes a one-year limited warranty for the crate and support by email at [email protected]; no support phone is published, so that field is blank.

Strengths

  • Three doors, including a top door, make loading a calm dog easy in tight spaces
  • Fleece bed and carrying bag are included rather than sold as accessories
Watch out
  • Fabric and mesh cannot contain a dog that scratches or chews to get out — one determined session can end the crate
  • The steel-tube frame folds for travel but flexes if a large dog leans or stands against a wall panel
  • It is a travel shelter, not a vehicle safety device, and offers no crash protection in a collision
Product review

The EliteField 36-inch soft crate is the travel specialist of this ranking: a steel-tube frame covered in fabric and mesh that folds flat into its own carrying bag, with doors on the front, side and top and a fleece bed included, at 36 by 24 by 28 inches. It suits a calm, already crate-trained dog in hotels, at shows and on visits — and it is honestly not a containment device for a dog that wants out. The company

EliteField sells its soft crates primarily through Amazon, where the listing itself publishes a two-year warranty in the product title. Strengths
  • Slim profile and repositionable panels fit rooms a standard wire crate dominates
  • Diamond mesh is designed to remove the sharp gaps that catch paws and jaws in plain wire crates
  • Puppy divider included, and an extra frame converts it to a playpen as the dog grows
Watch out
  • It is a home crate, not a containment answer for a determined escape artist or a heavy chewer
  • At 48 lb the Large is not a crate most owners will enjoy carrying between rooms
  • The playpen conversion needs a paid extra frame, so the modular promise is not complete at the base price
Product review

The Evolv is Diggs' slim, modular wire crate: the same diamond-mesh idea as the flagship Revol in a narrower frame whose panels can be repositioned, with a puppy divider included and an optional extra frame that converts it to a playpen. The ranked Large interior measures 41.5 by 27.9 by 30.1 inches for dogs up to about 90 lb, in Ash White or Matte Black. Diggs covers it for one year and takes returns of unused crates within 30 days. It takes the final ranked slot because the flagship Revol is sold out in every size pending a December 2026 redesign, while the Evolv Large is in stock at the maker's store. Diggs Evolv Crate — Large

The verdict

The Gunner G1 Intermediate leads this field on the evidence that matters most for a vehicle kennel: it is the only double-walled crate ranked and its Intermediate size itself carries a 5-Star Center for Pet Safety crash certification, backed by a lifetime warranty — at $700 and 48 lb, the honest costs. The Lucky Duck Lucky Kennel is the value pick among certified kennels, matching the certification at $599.99 and 38 lb. For the home, the MidWest Ultima Pro's heavy-gauge wire is the strongest folding crate, while its sibling iCrate remains the sensible first crate at $61.93. The Impact High Anxiety crate owns its narrow, serious niche with a 10-year dog-damage guarantee. The asterisks: Ruff Land's published warranty terms conflict across its own dealer network and no term is printed for it, the Diggs Revol was shown out of stock ahead of a December 2026 redesign, and Fable pairs a one-year warranty with a strict no-refund policy — all three are scored with those facts in the open.

Questions, answered

How do I size a crate for my dog?

Measure the dog standing: length from nose to tail base plus two to four inches, and height from floor to the top of the head plus two inches. The dog should be able to stand, turn and lie stretched out. Travel kennels in this ranking are deliberately snugger than home crates — the certified travel makers say so themselves — so a size that is right for the car can be tight for all-day home use. Every ranked product states the exact size scored, because a crate line's sizes are not interchangeable.

Are crash-tested crates worth the money?

Only two kennels in this ranking carry an independent 5-Star crash certification from the Center for Pet Safety on the ranked size itself, and both cost several times a home wire crate. What the money buys is a kennel tested as a system — body, door and tie-downs — rather than a strong box. Several other travel kennels here publish internal drop or impact testing instead; the product notes say which is which, and no crate in this ranking claims a certification its maker does not publish.

Can a crate contain a dog with separation anxiety?

Containment and treatment are different things. One ranked crate is engineered specifically for escape behavior, with thicker alloy, five latching points and a 10-year dog-damage guarantee — and even its maker does not claim it cures anxiety. Wire and soft crates in this ranking are training tools for calm dogs; a panicking dog can injure itself on them. If a dog is destroying crates, pair any containment decision with a veterinarian or certified behaviorist.

Why do warranties differ so much between crate makers?

Because the failure modes differ. Travel-kennel makers publish lifetime warranties on rotomolded bodies, one aluminum maker guarantees against dog damage itself for ten years, and the largest wire-crate maker's one-year warranty expressly excludes damage caused by the animal. Read the exclusion, not just the term: a long warranty that excludes chewing may cover less of what actually happens than a shorter one that includes it.

Is a soft crate a good first crate?

For a calm, already trained dog who travels, yes — it is light, folds into its own bag and is kind to car interiors. As a first crate for a puppy or an untrained dog it is the wrong tool: fabric and mesh cannot survive chewing or scratching, and a dog that learns it can force a soft crate has learned a lesson that transfers to harder ones. Start with wire, move to soft for travel once the dog is settled.
