Best Headphones — Top 10

This ranking covers consumer headphones only: five over-ear models and five true-wireless earbuds, judged on sound quality, noise cancelling, battery life, comfort and call quality. Office and call-center headsets are ranked separately in our Home Office category, and gaming-first headsets are out of scope here. Every model is a current US-market product, priced in its standard retail configuration — for earbuds, with the charging case exactly as sold, and with no bundle SKUs in the basis. The even split reflects how people actually buy: over-ears for desks, planes and focused listening; earbuds for pockets, commutes and workouts.

The top of this field has never been closer. Sony's WH-1000XM6, Bose's QuietComfort Ultra line and Apple's AirPods all claim class-leading noise cancelling, but every claim rests on the maker's own test method, so we weigh owner ratings at scale alongside the spec sheets. Prices are regular list prices throughout: this category is promoted almost constantly, and our research dossier flags the street prices we observed during screening so the scores stay comparable from brand to brand. Where a maker's headline claim could not be checked against a second source, the copy says so rather than repeating it.

Sonos Ace Ultra
Launched September 29, 2026 — roughly 18 days of owner data at screening. The 35-hour battery, $25 replaceable-battery kit and TV Audio Swap are promising, but the record is too thin to displace flagships carrying thousands of verified ratings; expect it to contend next cycle.
Sonos$44981
Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5
Shipped September 3, 2026. User-replaceable batteries in both buds and case are the most owner-friendly design in the class, but six weeks of owner evidence and an unproven ANC record cannot yet displace the Bose and Sony earbuds ranked above.
Sennheiser$30080
Bose QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen)
The August 2026 update adds Immersive Audio and USB-C lossless at $359.00 — strong value — but it is dominated by the QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) above it, and a third Bose slot would crowd out better-evidenced rivals at the number-10 line.
Bose$35979
Bowers & Wilkins Px8 S2
Beautifully made and sweet-sounding, but $799.00 is nearly double the Px7 S3 ranked tenth, for an incremental gain — and its noise cancelling still trails Sony and Bose.
Bowers & Wilkins$79978
Google Pixel Buds Pro 2
A capable 2024 design (8 hours per charge, 30 with the case, per Google's spec page) whose sound and noise cancelling have been passed by the 2026 flagships ranked above; Pixel owners remain its natural audience.
Google$22977
Beats 360
In stores September 24, 2026 — too new for a reliable owner record at screening. Launch coverage also notes no wired audio option and no hi-res codec support, both counted against it in a sound-first category.
Beats$35076
Sony WH-1000XM5
Superseded by the WH-1000XM6 in May 2025 and still widely discounted. A fine buy on sale, but a ranking of current flagships cannot carry both generations.
Sony$40075
Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2
GN announced its exit from the consumer Elite earbud line alongside this model's June 2024 launch, so the long-term support and firmware horizon is limited even though the hardware remains competitive.
Jabra$28074
Focal Bathys
Superb sound and a 24-bit/192 kHz USB-DAC mode, but the platform dates to 2022 — Bluetooth 5.1 and 350 g — and its noise cancelling trails the class leaders it would have to beat at $699.00.
Focal$69973
Sony WF-1000XM5
Superseded by the WF-1000XM6 on February 12, 2026; the same one-generation rule applied to the WH-1000XM5 above.
Sony$30072
SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless
Out of scope: a gaming-first headset (GameDAC base station, 2.4 GHz low-latency link, retractable gaming microphone). Judged as consumer audio it would also trail the ranked over-ears on portability and noise cancelling.
SteelSeries$35071
Jabra Evolve2 75
Out of scope: a UC work headset with a boom microphone and Teams/Zoom certification. It belongs to the separate Home Office headsets category, where it is already ranked.

Sony WH-1000XM6

AmRank Score 92 $460

Best for: Travelers and commuters who want the strongest all-around noise cancelling, long battery life and clear calls in one over-ear headphone.

30 mm driver · HD NC Processor QN3Up to 30 hrs (ANC on) · 40 hrs offBluetooth 5.3 · LDAC · multipoint12 mics for ANC · 6-mic AI call system254 g · foldable · replaceable earpads

Product review

Sony's sixth-generation flagship pairs the HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 — seven times faster than the QN1 in the XM5 — with 12 microphones for the most complete noise cancelling in this ranking, plus LDAC hi-res audio and multipoint. Owners back it up: 4.7 out of 5 across 1,385 Best Buy reviews, with 93–94% recommending it. It wins on the whole package — ANC, sound, calls and battery — rather than on any single trick.

The company

Sony sells the WH-1000XM6 direct in the US with a one-year limited warranty (parts and labor, per retailer warranty records). Support runs through Sony Electronics' published US line and support email, firmware and fit help live in the Sound Connect app, and the earpads are user-replaceable by hand — a genuine longevity plus in a sealed-headphone class.

Pros
  • Class-leading adaptive noise cancelling from a 12-microphone system
  • Up to 30 hours with ANC on; a 3-minute charge adds about 3 hours
  • LDAC hi-res audio, multipoint and user-replaceable earpads
Cons
  • List price rose to $459.99 after a $449.99 launch, while street prices run far lower
  • Wired listening is 3.5 mm only — no USB-C audio input
  • No water-resistance rating for workouts or rain

Apple H2 chip · Adaptive AudioUp to 8 hrs (ANC on) · 24 hrs with caseIP57 buds and case · 5 tip sizesHeart-rate sensing · Hearing Aid featureUSB-C MagSafe case · Live Translation

Product review

AirPods Pro 3 bring Apple's H2 chip, up to twice the noise cancelling of AirPods Pro 2 by Apple's measure, and two genuinely new tricks: heart-rate sensing during workouts and an FDA-authorized Hearing Aid feature. Battery life reaches 8 hours with ANC on and the IP57 rating covers both the buds and the case — a first for AirPods. For iPhone owners it is the most complete earbud package we scored; off Apple hardware, much of the magic switches off.

The company

Apple sells AirPods Pro 3 direct and through every major US retailer, with support through Apple Support and the 1-800-MY-APPLE line published on its product pages. AirPods carry Apple's one-year limited warranty with AppleCare+ available, and the Hearing Aid feature is FDA-authorized — a regulatory record no rival earbud in this ranking matches.

Pros
  • 8 hours with ANC on and IP57 for buds and case — the toughest earbuds here
  • Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection built in
  • Heart-rate sensing and Live Translation on iPhone
Cons
  • Best features — Live Translation, hearing health, automatic switching — need an iPhone
  • No LDAC or aptX; Android users get basic Bluetooth audio only
  • Battery drops to 7.5 hours with spatial audio and head tracking on (Apple's test)

CustomTune sound + ANC calibrationUp to 30 hrs · 23 hrs Immersive AudioBluetooth 5.4 · USB-C lossless audioCinema Mode · Immersive Audio265 g · on-head detection

Product review

Bose's second-generation Ultra pairs CustomTune per-ear calibration with Immersive Audio and a new Cinema Mode, and adds USB-C lossless listening alongside the 3.5 mm cable. Bose rates battery life at up to 30 hours in Quiet or Aware mode. Owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 across 741 Best Buy reviews; it sits a hair behind the Sony on all-round polish and ahead of it, for many listeners, on raw quiet.

The company

Bose sells the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones direct, with the 30-day return policy and price-match promise stated across its US store pages. Bose publishes neither a support phone nor a support email on its product pages — help runs through Bose.com and the Bose app — so both contact fields are blank here by rule, and that opacity costs it accountability points.

Pros
  • World-class noise cancelling with CustomTune per-ear calibration
  • USB-C lossless audio plus a wired cable in the box
  • Cinema Mode spatial audio that flatters movies and TV
Cons
  • Bose's own page mixes gen-2 battery claims (30 hrs) with gen-1 test footnotes (24 hrs)
  • No water-resistance rating
  • Immersive Audio cuts battery life to about 23 hours and flatters some content more than other content

Product review

Sony's WF-1000XM6 shrinks the 1000X formula into earbuds: a QN3e processor three times faster than the XM5's chip, eight microphones, and a shell about 11% slimmer, tuned with mastering engineers. Sony claims 25% further noise reduction than the WF-1000XM5, and the 8-hour bud battery matches the class best. Sony's own store rates it 4.23 out of 5 across 923 ratings — strong, with fit the usual divider.

The company

Sony sells the WF-1000XM6 direct in the US; retailer warranty records for the 1000X line show Sony's standard one-year limited warranty (parts and labor). Pros
  • 25% further noise reduction vs WF-1000XM5 (Sony) with 8-mic adaptive ANC
  • LDAC hi-res audio, multipoint and a Qi wireless charging case
  • Bone-conduction sensor and AI beamforming for clearer calls
Cons
  • Case holds two extra charges — the 24-hour total trails Samsung's 26–30 hours
  • At $329.99 it is the priciest earbud in this ranking, above Bose and Apple
  • Sony's 'best call quality' claim is measured only against Sony's own earbuds (ETSI method)

Product review

The second-generation Ultra Earbuds keep Bose's class-defining noise cancelling and CustomTune sound, and add wireless charging, Cinema Mode and AI noise suppression for calls. Bose's own testing gives up to 6 hours per charge at 75 dB SPL, with the case holding three further full charges. Abt's Bose-syndicated owner reviews average 4.5 out of 5 across 532 ratings.

Pros
  • The strongest earbud noise cancelling we scored, with ActiveSense in Aware mode
  • Nine eartip and stability-band combinations for a secure seal
  • Wireless charging case and multipoint, both new for this generation
Cons
  • 6-hour bud battery is the shortest here, and Immersive Audio cuts it to about 4 hours

Product review

The MOMENTUM 5 is the audiophile's pick in this ranking: a 42 mm driver, aptX Lossless, and the most natural tuning of any headphone here in back-to-back comparisons with the Sony XM6. Its 57-hour rated battery nearly doubles the field, and the battery itself is user-replaceable with a Phillips screwdriver. It launched in the US on June 16, 2026 at $399.95 on Sennheiser's own store.

Color Options

The company

Sennheiser sells the MOMENTUM 5 through its US store, which lists a one-year manufacturer warranty for this model — shorter than the two-year cover the brand is known for, so check the product page before buying. The user-replaceable battery, swappable earpads and a published US support line make it one of the most serviceable flagships here.

Pros
  • Best battery in the ranking: up to 57 hours with ANC on
  • aptX Lossless and a user-replaceable battery for longevity
  • Spacious, refined sound that bests the XM6 in direct comparisons
Cons
  • One-year US warranty as listed on Sennheiser's store, not the two years of older models
  • Noise cancelling is a step behind Sony and Bose, especially low-frequency rumble
  • At 290 g it is heavier than the Sony and Bose flagships

Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro

Product review

Samsung's Galaxy Buds4 Pro pair an 11 mm woofer with a planar tweeter and dual amplifiers — the most ambitious driver setup in an earbud here — with Adaptive ANC 2.0 and Bluetooth 6.1. Galaxy owners get 24-bit/96 kHz SSC UHQ audio and HD Voice calls; everyone else gets a reduced feature set, which Samsung documents in its own FAQ. Samsung's store rates them 4.7 out of 5 across about 2,600 ratings.

Color Options

The company

Samsung sells the Galaxy Buds4 Pro direct, where its US store shows a 4.7 out of 5 rating across roughly 2,600 ratings, and runs support through its published 1-800-SAMSUNG line. Samsung's own FAQ is unusually candid about what non-Galaxy phones give up — Auto Switch, HD Voice and hi-res SSC UHQ audio are Galaxy-only — and that candor is reflected in the copy here.

Pros
  • Two-way drivers with dual amps and 24-bit/96 kHz audio on Galaxy phones
  • IP57 earbuds and a wireless charging case; 26 hours total with ANC on
  • Strong owner record: 4.7/5 across roughly 2,600 Samsung.com ratings
Cons
  • No true multipoint — Auto Switch hops only between Samsung-account devices
  • No USB-C cable in the box, and the charging case has no IP rating
  • On iPhone, playback drops to 16-bit/44.1 kHz with ANC and Ambient only (Samsung's FAQ)

Product review

AirPods Max 2 finally bring Apple's H2 chip to the over-ears: up to 1.5x more noise cancelling than the original Max by Apple's IEC-based measure, plus Adaptive Audio, Live Translation and USB-C lossless audio. Battery life holds at 20 hours with ANC on. It is superbly built and deeply Apple — and at 386 g and a $549.00 list price, the ranking prices in both burdens.

Color Options

The company

Apple sells AirPods Max 2 direct and through US retail, with support via Apple Support and the 1-800-MY-APPLE line printed on the product page itself. The one-year limited warranty is standard Apple, with AppleCare+ as the paid extension. The 2026 model keeps the original's aluminum design — and, at 386.2 g, its substantial weight.

Pros
  • Full H2 feature set: Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Live Translation
  • USB-C lossless and ultra-low-latency audio for creators
  • Premium aluminum build in five colors
Cons
  • 386 g — the heaviest headphone in this ranking by a wide margin
  • $549.00 list is the highest here, though Amazon has repeatedly sold it at $429
  • The Smart Case still is not a protective travel case, and there is no IP rating

10 mm magnetic fluid driversUp to 10 hrs (ANC on) · 28 hrs with case3-device multipoint · LDACDolby Atmos + head trackingIPX4 · Qi wireless charging

Product review

The EAH-AZ100 is the sleeper audiophile earbud: 10 mm magnetic fluid drivers, Dolby Atmos with head tracking, and multipoint that holds three devices at once — a trick nothing else in this ranking matches. Battery life is a strong 10 hours with ANC on and 28 hours with the case. It gives up noise-cancelling ground to Bose and Sony, which is exactly why it sits ninth and not higher.

Color Options
BlackSilverChampagne GoldMidnight BlueMoonlight Lilac

The company

Technics (Panasonic) sells the EAH-AZ100 through its US store; the model launched in January 2025 at $299.99 and has built an established owner record (roughly 460 B&H reviews) alongside frequent discounting. Technics publishes no US support phone on the product page, so the contact fields are blank rather than guessed.

Pros
  • Connects to three devices simultaneously — unique in this ranking
  • 10-hour bud battery with ANC on, the best among the earbuds here
  • Magnetic fluid drivers deliver the most hi-fi-leaning earbud tuning here
Cons
  • Noise cancelling is a tier below Bose and Sony despite the 'adaptive' billing
  • Three-device multipoint cannot run simultaneously with LDAC
  • Deep, frequent discounts ($199.99–$234.99 observed) make the list price a soft number

Product review

The Px7 S3 is the purist's over-ear: 40 mm bio-cellulose drivers, a dedicated amplifier/DAC stage, aptX Lossless, and a 5-band EQ with a TrueSound bypass in the B&W Music app. Battery life is 30 hours, and a 15-minute charge returns about 7 hours. What it does not do is out-cancel Sony or Bose — review consensus puts its ANC a clear step behind — so it closes the ranking as the sound-first alternative.

Color Options
Anthracite BlackCanvas WhiteIndigo BlueFrost BlueVintage Maroon

The company

Bowers & Wilkins sells the Px7 S3 direct in the US and publishes a US support phone — 1-800-370-3740 — in its site footer, alongside its Carlsbad, California address: accountability most rivals here don't match. The B&W Music app handles EQ and firmware, and the headphone itself needs no account to play.

Pros
  • Most musical tuning of the over-ears, with aptX Lossless
  • Dedicated DAC/amp stage and TrueSound mode in the B&W Music app
  • 30-hour battery with fast top-ups (15 minutes ≈ 7 hours)
Cons
  • Noise cancelling is the weakest of the ranked over-ears
  • $479.00 list for a sound-first brief, while stronger-ANC rivals cost less
  • At 300 g it is on the heavier side for all-day wear

Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3

The verdict

The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the best headphone for most people: the most complete noise cancelling in this ranking, a 30-hour battery, LDAC and multipoint, backed by 4.7 out of 5 across 1,385 Best Buy reviews. iPhone owners who live in earbuds should take the AirPods Pro 3 instead; listeners who put sound above silence should take the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5; and Galaxy owners get the most headphone for their phone from Samsung's Galaxy Buds4 Pro. Bose's QuietComfort Ultra pair remain the quiet-at-any-cost alternatives.

Questions, answered

Over-ear or earbuds — which should I buy?

Over-ears (Sony WH-1000XM6, Bose QuietComfort Ultra) give the strongest noise cancelling, the longest battery life — 30 hours or more — and a wider soundstage, at the cost of bulk. Earbuds (AirPods Pro 3, Sony WF-1000XM6) disappear into a pocket and carry sweat resistance for workouts, but run 6–10 hours per charge and depend on a tight ear-tip seal for their ANC to work. If you can only pick one, pick by where you listen most: desk and plane, over-ear; commute and gym, earbuds.

Why do the prices here differ from what I see in stores?

We rank at regular list price because flagship headphones are promoted almost constantly. During this research the WH-1000XM6 listed at $459.99 but sold at $378–$398, AirPods Max 2 listed at $549.00 but repeatedly hit $429, and the Technics EAH-AZ100 listed at $299.99 but sold as low as $199.99. Scoring at list keeps the comparison honest across brands; our research dossier flags the notable street prices observed for each model.

Do AirPods and Galaxy Buds really work worse with the 'wrong' phone?

Yes — and the makers say so themselves. Samsung's own FAQ states that on an iPhone the Galaxy Buds4 Pro are limited to 16-bit/44.1 kHz audio with ANC and Ambient modes only: HD Voice, Auto Switch and 24-bit SSC UHQ audio are Galaxy-only, and there is no true multipoint. AirPods Pro 3 likewise keep their hearing-health features, Live Translation and automatic device switching inside Apple's ecosystem. The Sony, Bose, Sennheiser, Technics and Bowers & Wilkins models here are platform-neutral by comparison.

Are the battery and noise-cancelling numbers comparable across brands?

Only loosely. Each maker tests differently: Bose rates the QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds with playback at 75 dB SPL, Apple tests AirPods at 50% volume on preproduction units, and ANC claims such as '2x more' or '25% further reduction' are always measured against the maker's own previous model, never against a rival. We print the figures as makers state them, note the test conditions where given, and let owner ratings at scale arbitrate the real-world gap.

Which of these headphones will last the longest?

Repairability is the differentiator. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5's battery is user-replaceable with a Phillips screwdriver, and the Sony WH-1000XM6's earpads swap by hand without tools; two screened models — Sennheiser's MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 and Sonos's Ace Ultra — also offer replaceable batteries. Sealed earbuds are effectively disposable once their cells fade, which is one reason the earbuds here score below the best over-ears on company accountability.
