Best Microwaves — Top 10

A microwave's headline wattage is the least honest number in the kitchen. Makers and retailers quote input watts, output watts and, on combo ovens, the convection element's rating as if they were interchangeable, so a '1250W' oven can deliver less cooking power than a truthful 1100W one. The second split is how power is delivered: conventional ovens pulse full power on and off, while inverter models hold a steady stream — which is why inverter ovens defrost without cooked edges and reheat without rubbery spots. This ranking states maker-rated cooking output everywhere, and scores the honesty of the claim alongside the number.

We screened current US countertop models only — over-the-range and built-in ovens are a different purchase — and ranked ten on verified output and heating evenness first, then capacity fit, sensor quality, owner satisfaction at scale and company accountability: warranty terms, published support contacts and, in 2026, safety record. Every price was checked this session at the maker's own store or a major US retailer, and several strong performers were cut or marked down for reasons stated in the open, from a discontinued GE to two Toshiba models excluded outright over a June 2026 safety alert.

Toshiba EM131A5C-SS Countertop Microwave
Excluded from the ranking on safety grounds, despite an 84 performance score. This model is named in a June 2026 Consumer Reports safety alert: EM131A5C units appear in incident reports filed with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission — 28 reports across the named Toshiba models between January 2023 and April 2026 — describing microwaves starting on their own, smoking or sparking. No recall has been issued. Consumer Reports advises owners to monitor the oven while it runs, store nothing inside it, and unplug it after use. We will reconsider this model if the alert is resolved.
Toshiba$13484
Toshiba EM925A5A-BS Countertop Microwave
Excluded from the ranking on safety grounds, despite a 76 performance score. The stainless version of this model, the EM925A5A-SS, is named in the June 2026 Consumer Reports safety alert described in this category's FAQ: 28 incident reports filed with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission between January 2023 and April 2026 describe Toshiba microwaves starting on their own, smoking or sparking, and no recall has been issued. The black-stainless EM925A5A-BS shares the same model line and electronics, so the whole line is excluded pending resolution of the alert.

Panasonic NN-SN68KS Inverter Microwave
Panasonic's own current store version of the 1.2 cu ft / 1200W inverter platform our winner comes from — cut on price, not quality: at $369.95 in Panasonic's US store it costs nearly double the NN-SN686S's $197.99 street price for the same core specification.
Panasonic$37070
GE GCST10A1WSS Countertop Convection Microwave
Discontinued: GE's own product page states 'This model is no longer being manufactured' and showed it at a $259.00 clearance price. A shame — its 1.0 cu ft convection/air-fry design and honestly stated 1050W (IEC-705) output rating were exactly what this category needs more of.
GE$25968
GE JVM6175SKSS Over-the-Range Microwave

Panasonic NN-SN686S Inverter Microwave

AmRank Score 92 $198

Best for: Most households: buyers who want genuinely even inverter cooking and fast 1200W output in a midsize oven, without paying for oven modes they will not use.

1.2 cu ft capacity1200W output, Inverter13.4 in turntableGenius Sensor cook and reheat14 auto cook presets

Product review

The NN-SN686S is the benchmark midsize countertop microwave: a true 1200W of inverter output in a 1.2 cu ft cavity, where most rivals at this price pulse a weaker conventional magnetron on and off. Panasonic's Genius Sensor handles reheat and cook by steam sensing, and Inverter Turbo Defrost thaws without cooking the edges. It is not the newest or prettiest oven here — it wins because the core job, heating food evenly and quickly, is done better than by anything else under $200.

Color Options
Stainless Steel

The company

Panasonic backs the NN-SN686S with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty and five years of parts coverage on the magnetron tube, per its owner's manual, and publishes US support at 1-800-211-PANA (7262). Panasonic is the originator of inverter microwave technology and still anchors its US countertop line on it.

Pros
  • True 1200W inverter output — the highest maker-rated output in a 1.2 cu ft oven we ranked, delivered as a steady stream instead of on/off pulses
  • Genius Sensor cook and reheat, Inverter Turbo Defrost and a Keep Warm mode cover the daily jobs without guesswork
  • Compact inverter footprint — a 13.4 in turntable inside a 20.7 in-wide body — at a $197.99 street price
Cons
  • Microwave only — no convection, grill or air-fry modes in this design at any price
  • Panasonic's own store now leads with the newer NN-SN68KS version of this platform at $369.95, and this model's maker page has been retired to a support page
  • Membrane keypad and push-button door feel a step behind the dials and soft-close doors on the Breville models ranked here

Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 (BMO870BSS1BUC1)

AmRank Score 89 $500

Best for: Small kitchens and keen cooks who want one appliance to microwave, air fry, convection-bake and grill — and will actually use the oven modes.

1.1 cu ft capacity1100W microwave output, Power Smoothing InverterAir fry, convection and grill modes19 smart presets12.4 in turntable

Product review

The Combi Wave is three appliances sharing one 1.1 cu ft cavity: an 1100W inverter microwave, a convection oven and an air fryer with a dedicated crisp pan, blended intelligently by Breville's Element iQ system. Fast Combi and Cook From Frozen combine the modes so food cooks through and still browns. As a pure microwave it is outclassed by the cheaper Panasonic above it — as a small second oven that also microwaves properly, nothing else here comes close.

Brushed Stainless Steel

The company

Breville backs the Combi Wave with a one-year limited product warranty on parts and labor and publishes US customer service at 1-866-273-8455. Breville's US microwave line is just two models — this and the Smooth Wave ranked seventh — both built around its Power Smoothing Inverter.

Pros
  • Real range: air fry, convection bake, grill and two combination modes, with the Combi Crisp pan and trivet included in the box
  • Power Smoothing Inverter plus Smart Cook, Smart Reheat and Smart Defrost presets make the microwave side genuinely good, not an afterthought
  • Soft-close door, sound controls and an inside-door shortcut panel make it the quietest, most polished oven to live with here
Cons
  • $499.95 is the joint-highest price in this ranking for the second-smallest cavity — you are paying for the oven modes, not microwave space
  • Roughly 20 in deep before handle and clearance, so it eats more counter than its 1.1 cu ft suggests
  • Retailer wattage labels are a mess: Williams Sonoma lists '1700W' and Best Buy lists 1400W, neither of which is the 1100W microwave output stated in Breville's manual

Panasonic NN-SN96JS Cyclonic Wave Inverter Microwave

AmRank Score 87 $300

Best for: Families and entertainers who need a 2.2 cu ft cavity and the strongest honest output in the class for big dishes and batch reheating.

2.2 cu ft capacity1250W output, Cyclonic Wave Inverter16.5 in turntableGenius Sensor, 20 auto cook menus11 power levels

Product review

The NN-SN96JS is the biggest, strongest pure microwave in this ranking: 2.2 cu ft behind a 16.5 in turntable, driven by Panasonic's Cyclonic Wave Inverter at a maker-rated 1250W. The Genius Sensor and 20 auto cook menus handle everything from sensor reheat to family casseroles without the cold-center problem of conventional big-box ovens. Buy it for capacity and even power; skip it if counter width is tight.

Color Options
Stainless Steel

The company

Panasonic warranties its inverter microwaves at one year parts and labor with five years of parts coverage on the magnetron tube, and publishes US support at 1-800-211-PANA (7262). The NN-SN96JS is the current flagship of Panasonic's US countertop line, sold through its own store and major appliance retailers.

Pros
  • 1250W Cyclonic Wave Inverter output — the highest maker-rated output in this ranking, spread through the largest cavity
  • 16.5 in turntable takes full dinner plates and family-size casserole dishes that stall smaller ovens
  • Genius Sensor reheat and 20 auto cook menus make the size easy to use daily, not just at holidays
Cons
  • Out of stock at Panasonic's own US store when we checked in October 2026 — retailer stock is the practical route
  • 23-7/8 in wide and 36.8 lb: it needs a genuinely large counter and is no fun to move for cleaning
  • Microwave only — at $299.95, households wanting air fry or convection should look at the multi-ovens ranked second and eighth

Sharp SMC2266KS Countertop Microwave

AmRank Score 86 $240

Best for: Value hunters who want family-size 2.2 cu ft capacity and inverter cooking for noticeably less than the Panasonic flagship.

2.2 cu ft capacity1200W output, Inverter16.5 in Carousel turntablePrecise Cook sensor11 power levels

Product review

Sharp's SMC2266KS is the value route to a big inverter oven: 2.2 cu ft, a maker-rated 1200W inverter output and a 16.5 in Carousel turntable for $239.99 — sixty dollars under Panasonic's flagship with most of the substance. The Precise Cook sensor, Express Cook and melt/soften keys cover daily work, and owner ratings at Abt run 4.6/5 across 102 reviews. It lacks the Panasonic's menu depth, but on watts per dollar nothing large beats it.

Color Options
Stainless Steel

The company

Sharp warrants the SMC2266KS for one year parts and labor, plus an additional four years on the magnetron tube (parts only), per the warranty printed in its owner's manual. US support is published at 1-800-BE-SHARP (237-4277), and Sharp's Carousel line is one of the longest-running names in countertop microwaves.

Pros
  • 1200W inverter output and 2.2 cu ft at $239.99 — the strongest watts-per-dollar of any large oven here
  • Five-year magnetron parts coverage (one year full, plus four magnetron-only years) beats Panasonic's and Breville's terms
  • 16.5 in removable Carousel turntable and sensor cooking match the flagship class feature for feature
Cons
  • The $239.99 Abt price we verified includes a manufacturer rebate scheduled to end October 18, 2026; the comparison shelf price is $269.99
  • 24.4 in wide — the largest footprint in this ranking, so measure the counter first
  • Sharp publishes no US product page or support email we could find for this model; documentation routes through retailers and the phone line

LG MSER2090S NeoChef Countertop Microwave

AmRank Score 83 $260

Best for: Large households that want inverter evenness, a wipe-clean interior and the longest magnetron warranty in this ranking.

2.0 cu ft capacity1200W output, Smart Inverter16 in turntableSensor Cook and Sensor ReheatEasyClean interior

Product review

LG's NeoChef MSER2090S pairs a 2.0 cu ft cavity with a maker-rated 1200W Smart Inverter, sensor cook and reheat, and a hexagonal six-wheel turntable ring that keeps tall, heavy dishes stable. The EasyClean interior and SmoothTouch glass controls make it the easiest large oven here to keep clean. It is ranked below the Sharp on value and owner scores, not on hardware.

Color Options
Stainless Steel

The company

LG covers the MSER2090S for one year parts and labor and warrants the magnetron for ten years, per its published specification — the longest magnetron term in this ranking. US support is published at 1-800-243-0000, and owner volume is deep: Home Depot alone carries over a thousand ratings for this model.

Pros
  • 1200W Smart Inverter output with humidity-sensor cooking in a family-size 2.0 cu ft cavity
  • Ten-year magnetron warranty — the longest in this ranking — over a one-year full warranty
  • EasyClean coating, LED interior lighting and a six-wheel hexagonal turntable ring that resists tipping under heavy dishes
Cons
  • Owner satisfaction is middling for the price — 4.2/5 across 1,080 Home Depot reviews, below the Sharp and Panasonic large ovens
  • Nearly 24 in wide, so the 2.0 cu ft still demands a large counter
  • No convection or air-fry capability — at $259.99 it is a microwave-only oven competing with cheaper conventional 2.0 cu ft models

#6

Breville Smooth Wave (BMO850BSS1BUC1)

AmRank Score 82 $400

Best for: Design-led buyers who want the quietest, best-finished microwave-only oven and will pay a premium for controls and calm rather than capacity.

1.2 cu ft capacity1200W output, Power Smoothing Inverter12.4 in turntableSensor iQ, 15 smart presetsSoft-close door

Product review

The Smooth Wave is the luxury microwave-only oven: a 1200W Power Smoothing Inverter, Sensor iQ auto cook, reheat and defrost, 15 presets and a soft-close door Breville rates 80% quieter, in a 1.2 cu ft brushed-steel body. When it works as designed, it is the most pleasant oven here to use day to day. A one-year warranty and a trail of owner reliability complaints keep a $399.95 oven at seventh.

Color Options
Brushed Stainless Steel

The company

Breville backs the Smooth Wave with a one-year limited warranty and publishes US customer service at 1-866-273-8455. It is the microwave-only half of Breville's two-model US Wave line, sharing its inverter and Sensor iQ platform with the Combi Wave ranked second.

Pros
  • 1200W inverter output — joint-highest in a midsize oven — with Sensor iQ smoothing out reheats and defrosts
  • Soft-close door, adjustable sounds and a shortcuts panel inside the door make it the quietest, most considered design here
  • Bright, easy-to-monitor interior and dial-based controls that owners consistently praise
Cons
  • Owner ratings are the weakest of any premium model here — 3.6/5 across 172 Williams Sonoma reviews, with recurring long-term reports of soft-close doors failing and E-05 errors
  • $399.95 buys microwave-only cooking: no convection, grill or air fry, and a cavity no bigger than the $197.99 winner's
  • Listings routinely mislabel it '1250W' — that figure is the power draw; Breville's manual rates microwave output at 1200W

#7

Panasonic HomeChef 4-in-1 NN-CD87KS

AmRank Score 80 $500

Best for: One- or two-person households that want a microwave plus a genuine small second oven — air fryer, convection bake and broiler in a 22 in footprint.

1.2 cu ft capacity1000W microwave output, InverterAir fry and convection bake to 425°FFlashXpress broiler14.2 in turntable

Product review

The HomeChef 4-in-1 wraps a 1000W inverter microwave around a real small oven: air fry with a dedicated basket, convection baking from 100–425°F, a FlashXpress broiler and two combination modes, with the enamel tray and rack included. The Genius Sensor keeps the microwave side honest. It is the most versatile 1.2 cu ft box here — at the joint-highest price, and with the weakest microwave output of the inverter group.

Color Options
Stainless Steel

The company

Panasonic sells the HomeChef through its own US store and major retailers, backs it under the same one-year parts-and-labor and five-year magnetron-parts warranty structure as its other inverter ovens, and publishes support at 1-800-211-PANA (7262).

Pros
  • Four real functions — inverter microwave, air fry, convection bake and broiler — with basket, rack and enamel tray in the box
  • Convection range to 425°F makes it a credible second oven for small households, not a gimmick mode
  • Genius Sensor cook and reheat keeps everyday microwaving up to Panasonic's usual standard
Cons
  • Out of stock at Panasonic's own store when checked in October 2026 — expect to buy through a retailer
  • Microwave output is 1000W, the lowest of the inverter models ranked — slower on big microwave jobs than the 1200W Panasonics
  • $499.99 and 39.1 lb is a lot of money and weight for a 1.2 cu ft oven

Magic Chef MC110MB Countertop Microwave

AmRank Score 78 $128

Best for: Budget buyers who want full 1.1 cu ft size and the best frozen-food results under $130, and do not need sensor cooking or an inverter.

1.1 cu ft capacity1000W output, conventional12.4 in turntable6 one-touch presets10 power levels

Product review

The MC110MB is the budget overachiever: TechGearLab scored it 77 overall — the best in its tested group — with frozen foods at 8.5/10 and fast liquid heating from a conventional 1000W platform in a full 1.1 cu ft cavity. Consumer Reports' lab work likewise praised its auto-defrost. It gives up inverter evenness and sensor smarts to hit $127.99, and for leftovers-and-frozen duty many households will never miss them.

Color Options

The company

Magic Chef is a Maytag trademark used under license by MC Appliance Corporation, which publishes US support at 1-888-775-0202 and directs owners to the warranty card in the box for terms. The MC110MB has an unusually deep test record for a budget model: both TechGearLab and Consumer Reports lab-tested it, and CR rated its auto-defrost performance excellent.

Pros
  • Best overall score (77) in TechGearLab's microwave group test, at the second-lowest price in this ranking
  • Frozen foods 8.5/10 and defrosting 8.0/10 in the same test — strong exactly where budget ovens usually fail
  • Full-size 1.1 cu ft cavity with a 12.4 in turntable fits a standard dinner plate, unlike the 0.7–0.9 cu ft budget class
Cons
  • Conventional on/off power with no sensor cooking — reheats run on guesswork compared with the sensor models above it
  • Target owner reviews report slippery feet that let the unit slide when the door opens, and a turntable that can wander off its track
  • Black finish only in this SKU, and the child lock adds an unlock step owners find fussy for short jobs

Samsung MS19DG8500SR Countertop Microwave

AmRank Score 74 $319

Best for: Families reheating big dishes who value an easy-clean cavity over raw speed: 1.9 cu ft, a 15.6 in turntable and sensor cooking in a fingerprint-resistant finish.

1.9 cu ft capacity950W output, conventional15.6 in turntableSensor Cook and Sensor ReheatCeramic enamel interior

Product review

Samsung's entry is built around space and upkeep: a 1.9 cu ft cavity with a 15.6 in turntable, lined in ceramic enamel that resists scratches and wipes clean, in a fingerprint-resistant stainless finish. A humidity sensor drives Sensor Cook and Sensor Reheat, Auto Defrost handles frozen food, and Eco Mode trims standby power. The trade is speed — Samsung rates output at 950W, below the 1200W class that leads this ranking, so family-size loads take longer — and owners rate it just 2.9 of 5 in Samsung's own store, which is why it sits at the bottom of this top ten despite the generous cavity.

Color Options
Stainless SteelMatte Black Stainless Steel

The company

Samsung sells this model through its own US store and national appliance retailers. US support is Samsung Care at 1-800-726-7864; Samsung's spec sheet gives one year parts and labor with ten years on the magnetron, and an optional trim kit (MA-TK8020TS) allows built-in installation.

Pros
  • 1.9 cu ft cavity and 15.6 in turntable fit family-size dishes most midsize ovens cannot
  • Ceramic enamel interior is scratch-resistant and wipes clean without scrubbing
  • Sensor Cook and Sensor Reheat read humidity and set time and power automatically
Cons
  • 950W rated output trails the 1200W class above it — big loads heat slowly
  • Owners rate it 2.9 of 5 on Samsung's own store (73 ratings), the softest maker-store score in this ranking
  • Wide 23.6 in footprint — measure the counter run before ordering

Toshiba ML-EM62P(SS) Countertop Microwave

AmRank Score 72 $250

Best for: Families who want maximum cavity and full 1200W conventional power with sensor cooking, without paying inverter prices.

2.2 cu ft capacity1200W output, conventional16.5 in position-memory turntableSmart humidity sensor, 6 auto menusMute function and ECO mode

Product review

Toshiba's family-size conventional oven pairs the joint-largest cavity in this ranking (2.2 cu ft) with a full 1200W and a 16.5 in turntable with position memory — it returns food to the exact spot it started, so handles face you again. A humidity sensor runs six auto menus and the defrost cycle, and mute and ECO modes quiet its beeps and standby draw. One point of clarity, given this year: the June 2026 Consumer Reports alert discussed in the FAQ names the EM131A5C and the EM925A5A-SS, not this model; the ML-EM62P(SS) ranks here on its own record.

Color Options
Stainless Steel

The company

Toshiba-brand microwaves are made and supported in the US by Midea America Corp under a one-year limited warranty, with contacts printed in the manual: [email protected] and 855-204-5313. The June 2026 Consumer Reports alert names two other Toshiba models — both excluded from this ranking — and does not name this one.

Pros
  • 1200W output and a 2.2 cu ft cavity match the biggest, fastest conventional ovens here
  • Position-memory turntable brings dishes back to their starting position after cooking
  • Humidity sensor with six auto menus, plus mute and ECO mode
Cons
  • Conventional power pulses on and off, so gentle cooking is less even than the inverter models above it
  • Owner sentiment is thin and mixed so far: 3.3 of 5 across 8 ratings at Target during research
  • Prices swing widely by seller — $227.99 in an October 17, 2026 Amazon price-tracker read against the $249.99 ranked price

Toshiba ML-EM62P(SS) Countertop Microwave

The verdict

Buy the Panasonic NN-SN686S (92, $197.99) unless you have a specific reason not to: it pairs the strongest honest output in its size class with true inverter evenness at a mid-market price. Families should step up to the Panasonic NN-SN96JS (87, $299.95) for capacity or save with the Sharp SMC2266KS (86, $239.99); cooks who want one appliance to microwave, bake and air fry should take the Breville Combi Wave 3 in 1 (89, $499.95). Two Toshiba models that scored well enough to rank — the EM131A5C-SS (84) and the EM925A5A line (76) — are excluded entirely: a June 2026 Consumer Reports safety alert names them in reports of ovens starting on their own, smoking or sparking, and the FAQ below gives the detail. The Toshiba that does rank, the ML-EM62P(SS) (72, $249.99) at #10, is a different model the alert does not name. On a hard budget, the Magic Chef MC110MB (78, $127.99) is the honest cheap oven.

Questions, answered

Inverter or conventional — does it actually matter?

Yes, for two jobs: defrosting and gentle reheating. A conventional microwave can only blast full power in pulses, so low settings still scorch edges while centers stay frozen. An inverter holds a true, steady lower power, which thaws meat evenly and reheats sauces without splitting or rubbery spots. For boiling water and popcorn the difference is small; for defrosting and leftovers — most of what a microwave does — it is the single biggest quality gap in this ranking, and it is why every one of our top seven is an inverter model.

Why do listings disagree about the wattage of the same microwave?

Because three different numbers circulate: the input power the oven draws from the wall, the cooking output it delivers to food, and — on combo ovens — the convection or grill element's rating. Breville's Smooth Wave is sold as '1250W,' which is its input, against 1200W output; one retailer lists the Breville Combi Wave at '1700W,' a figure that matches none of its elements. This ranking uses the maker's rated cooking output everywhere, and we note the confusion wherever it appears.

How much capacity do I actually need?

Match the turntable, not just the cubic feet. A 0.9 cu ft compact with a 10.6 in turntable handles mugs, bowls and single plates — fine for dorms and offices. Most households are best served at 1.1–1.2 cu ft with a 12.4–13.4 in turntable, which fits a full dinner plate and a medium casserole. Step up to 2.0–2.2 cu ft (16–16.5 in turntables) only if you regularly reheat family-size dishes or entertain — and measure first, because those ovens run 24 in wide.

Are microwave–air fryer combo ovens worth it?

If you would use the second oven, yes; as a microwave upgrade, no. The two ranked here — Breville's Combi Wave (89) and Panasonic's HomeChef 4-in-1 (80) — genuinely bake, broil and air fry, and can replace a toaster oven. But both cost about $500, their microwave output (1100W and 1000W) trails the $197.99 winner's 1200W, and their cavities are midsize. Buy one for the oven modes, not for faster leftovers.

Should I worry about the 2026 Toshiba safety reports?

Yes — take them seriously. In June 2026, Consumer Reports alerted consumers that certain Toshiba microwaves appear in 28 incident reports filed with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission between January 2023 and April 2026, involving units starting on their own, smoking or sparking. The named models include the EM131A5C, the EM925A5A-SS and several Toshiba air-fryer combo models; no recall has been issued. Both countertop models scored well enough to rank here — the EM131A5C-SS at 84 and the EM925A5A line at 76 — and we have excluded them from the ranking on safety grounds pending resolution of the alert; they sit at the top of the screened list for this category with the detail. Consumer Reports' advice to owners stands: monitor the oven while it runs, don't store items inside it, and unplug it after use. The Toshiba that does rank, the ML-EM62P(SS) at #10, is a different model that the alert does not name.
