Best Tax Software — Top 10

Tax software pricing is a shell game played with the word “free.” For the 2026 filing season (tax year 2025 returns), the real separators are what a return contains — one sold share, a Schedule C side gig or an HSA can move a filer from a $0 tier to a $139 one — and what a state return adds on top: $0 to $64 depending on the brand. This ranking prices one named federal tier per product at each maker's published standard price, states every state fee separately, and reads guarantees as written: accuracy guarantees cover the maker's calculation errors, not your typing, and audit “support” is guidance, not representation.

We screened the whole consumer field — the two national giants, the challengers filing every federal return free, a flat-fee outlier and the budget specialists — and ranked ten offerings for ten genuinely different filers, with two tiers each from TurboTax and H&R Block serving different returns. Live-expert services where a preparer files for you, business and entity filing, and the IRS's discontinued Direct File are marked in the screened pool. Simple returns may still cost nothing: IRS Free File offered guided software free for 2026 at AGI of $89,000 or less, and two ranked products file federal returns free at any income.

TaxSlayer Self-Employed
The strongest cut in the pool. Classic covers the same Schedule C forms for $30 less; Self-Employed's premium buys tax-pro access and quarterly reminders, and filers who want a pro looking at a business return are better served by TurboTax Premium or H&R Block Premium.
TaxSlayer$7575
TaxAct Self-Employed
Only $10 over TaxAct Premier for self-employment guidance, but TurboTax Premium covers Schedule C inside the ranked flagship tier and H&R Block's Self-Employed undercuts it; TaxAct's weak owner ratings settle the cut.
TaxAct$11074
Liberty Tax Premium (Online)
Near-flagship money for an office-first brand's online product: reviewers note no W-2/1099 form import and a cumbersome flow for rentals and investments. Standard price shown; Liberty was promoting $87.95 at research time.
Liberty Tax$9872
eSmart Tax Premium
Liberty Tax's second online brand covers the full form set, but the interface and evidence base are thinner than every ranked budget rival, and FreeTaxUSA and TaxSlayer Classic beat it on price and support respectively.
eSmart Tax$6070
TaxHawk Deluxe
Same operator (TaxHawk, Inc.), same platform and same pricing as FreeTaxUSA Deluxe, which takes the slot; ranking both would rank one product twice.
TaxHawk$869
eFile.com Premium Plus
Credible mid-price DIY (state returns $32.99) with frequent promo discounts to about $42.49, but no live expert option and a thin support and review record against TaxSlayer Classic at $44.99.
eFile.com$5068
TurboTax Expert Full Service
Scope cut: a dedicated expert prepares and files the return for you, which is a live-preparer service, not DIY software. Price is Intuit's 'starting at' figure; final pricing depends on the forms used.
TurboTax$12965
IRS Direct File
Eligibility cut: the IRS confirmed Direct File will not be available for Filing Season 2026, so last year's free government option cannot file a tax year 2025 return. IRS Free File (guided partner software, AGI $89,000 or less) continues and is covered in the FAQ.
IRS$060

TurboTax Premium (Do It Yourself Online)

AmRank Score 92 $139

Best for: Investors, landlords and self-employed filers who want the most guided interview, the deepest document import and are willing to pay the field's highest mainstream price for them.

Online DIY · web and mobile appInvestments, rentals and Schedule C in one tierState return $64 per state, additionalFree Edition is simple-1040 only (~37% qualify)Live expert help is a separate paid upgrade

Product review

Premium is the TurboTax Do It Yourself tier that covers everything a consumer return can hold: investment sales and crypto, rental property, K-1s and Schedule C self-employment, with photo, upload and direct import of W-2s, 1099s and brokerage data plus Intuit Assist answers and a CompleteCheck review before filing. It is ranked first because no rival matches that combination of guidance and import depth — at a price no rival matches either.

The company

TurboTax is Intuit's consumer tax brand and the best-selling US tax software line, a claim Intuit prints on its own homepage. As Intuit states them, Do It Yourself products carry a 100% accurate calculations guarantee (Intuit pays IRS penalties plus interest from a calculation error), a maximum refund guarantee, and free one-on-one audit guidance through its Audit Support Guarantee; full audit representation (Audit Defense) is sold separately. Support is reached inside the product and the TurboTax community; Intuit publishes no consumer support email or general support phone for TurboTax, so both fields are blank.

Pros
  • Deepest import automation in the field: W-2s, 1099s and brokerage statements pulled in or photographed, per Intuit
  • CompleteCheck scans the finished return, backed by Intuit's 100% accurate calculations and maximum refund guarantees
  • One tier covers investors, landlords and the self-employed, so complexity never triggers a second upgrade
Cons
  • The most expensive mainstream DIY tier in this ranking, and its $64 state fee is also the field's highest
  • Paying your fees out of your refund adds a further processing fee, per Intuit's own pricing disclosures
  • The Free Edition covers simple Form 1040 returns only, so a single investment sale or side gig forces this paid tier

TurboTax Premium (Do It Yourself Online)

H&R Block Premium Online product photo
#2AmRank Top Pick \u2014 American Ranking Institute award badge

H&R Block Premium Online

AmRank Score 90 $105

Best for: Investors and rental owners who want near-TurboTax guidance for less money, with the safety net of walking into a physical office if the return goes sideways.

Online DIY · web and mobile appSchedules D and E, crypto sales and K-1sState return $49 per state, additionalAI Tax Assist included on paid plansFree in-person audit support included

Product review

Premium is H&R Block's investor tier: everything in Deluxe plus stock and crypto sales, rental income and K-1s, with AI Tax Assist and, per NerdWallet's 2026 comparison, unlimited tax pro help included on paid packages. It undercuts TurboTax Premium by $34 federal and $15 per state, and it is the only top-tier product whose maker will also sit with you in an office if the IRS writes back.

The company

H&R Block was founded in 1955 and pairs its online products with thousands of US tax offices. As the company states them, its DIY products carry accuracy and maximum refund guarantees, and H&R Block markets free in-person audit support with its online plans, with a fuller Worry-Free Audit Support product sold separately. The company publishes a US support line, 1-800-472-5625; no support email is published, so that field is blank.

Pros
  • Same filing situations as TurboTax Premium for $34 less federal and $15 less per state return
  • Free in-person audit support and an office network no other online filer can offer as a fallback
  • AI Tax Assist and tax pro help are included on paid plans rather than fenced into a separate Live tier
Cons
  • H&R Block repriced repeatedly during the 2026 season — Premium was $60 early in the season against the $105 standard price used here
  • Reviewers consistently rate its import depth and interface polish a notch below TurboTax's
  • Tax Pro Review and other expert add-ons are upsold through the filing flow

FreeTaxUSA Deluxe product photo
#3The Buck4Buck — best value in this category, American Ranking Institute award badge

FreeTaxUSA Deluxe

AmRank Score 89 $8

Best for: Confident filers with any return complexity — investments, rentals, a Schedule C business — who want the federal return free and support bought à la carte instead of by tier.

Federal return $0 — every situation, no tier upsellsDeluxe ($7.99) adds live chat and unlimited amendmentsState return $15.99 per stateW-2 and 1099 photo/PDF import includedAudit Defense $19.99 · Pro Support $64.99, optional

Product review

FreeTaxUSA's federal return is free for every tax situation it supports — itemizing, investments, rental income and Schedule C included — so the ranked Deluxe product is not a filing tier at all but the $7.99 support upgrade: live chat, priority support and unlimited amended returns on top of that free return. State returns are a flat $15.99, the cheapest mainstream state price in this ranking.

The company

FreeTaxUSA is the consumer service of TaxHawk, Inc., an IRS-authorized e-file provider whose homepage reports more than 82 million returns filed and a 4.8-out-of-5 customer rating. As the company states them, every return carries a maximum refund guarantee and a 100% accuracy guarantee on its calculations. Support runs through email and the account message center — the company publishes no support phone or email address, so both fields are blank.

Pros
  • The only ranked model with no form-based upsell: complexity never raises the federal price above $0
  • Flat $15.99 state return undercuts every big-brand state fee by $23 or more
  • Deluxe's unlimited amended returns cost less than a single 1040-X ($16.98) bought later
Cons
  • Guidance is thinner than the big brands': reviewers find the interview less intuitive and 1099 import more limited
  • There is no phone help at this price — phone access to a tax pro is the separate Pro Support add-on
  • The service is for US-located filers; it cannot be used to file from outside the United States

FreeTaxUSA Deluxe

TaxAct Premier product photo
#4

TaxAct Premier

AmRank Score 87 $100

Best for: Investors, crypto sellers and landlords who want a guided brand-name product well under TurboTax money, and who value a published support phone number.

Online DIY · web and mobile appStocks, crypto, home sale and rental incomeState return $39.99 per state (2026 season)$100k Accuracy Guarantee, as TaxAct states itXpert Assist expert help is a paid add-on

Product review

Premier is TaxAct's investor tier — everything in Deluxe plus stock and crypto sales, a home sale and rental income — priced $39 under TurboTax Premium with the largest stated accuracy guarantee in the field. It keeps TaxAct's guided interview and deduction checks while leaving expert help to the optional Xpert Assist add-on.

The company

TaxAct is the consumer brand of TaxAct, LLC (a Taxwell company), headquartered in Dallas, Texas per the company's official materials. As TaxAct states them, its products carry a Max Refund Guarantee and a $100,000 Accuracy Guarantee behind its calculations. TaxAct publishes a general customer support line, 319-373-3600, on its own contact pages; consumer support email is form-based and no address is published, so that field is blank.

Pros
  • Undercuts TurboTax Premium by $39.01 federal for the same headline filing situations
  • The $100,000 Accuracy Guarantee is the largest dollar figure any maker in this ranking puts behind its calculations
  • Publishes a real US support phone number and offers screen-sharing expert help on this tier per its season reviews
Cons
  • Seasonal promotions (Premier was advertised from $49.99 in season) make TaxAct's list price the hardest in this ranking to pin down
  • Owner sentiment is the weakest of any ranked brand — about 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, as compiled by TopConsumerReviews
  • A rival's comparison chart quotes TaxAct state returns at $54.99–$64.99, against the $39.99 season price reported by reviewers — verify at checkout

TaxAct Premier

TaxSlayer Classic product photo
#5

TaxSlayer Classic

AmRank Score 86 $45

Best for: Experienced filers with any tax situation who want every form in a single mid-priced tier and do not need a tax pro on call.

All major forms and situations in one tierState return $47.99 additional (maker's current page)Simply Free excludes dependents and EITC/CTCPhone and email tech support includedAsk a Tax Pro requires Premium ($64.99)

Product review

Classic is TaxSlayer's signature deal: one $44.99 federal tier that covers every major form and situation — itemizing, investments, rentals and self-employment alike — where rivals split the same forms across two or three priced tiers. What the higher TaxSlayer tiers sell is not forms but support, which is why Classic, not Premium, is the tier worth ranking.

The company

TaxSlayer is based in Augusta, Georgia, where its own About page lists its headquarters at 945 Broad Street and a year-round support line, 706-922-6741. As the company states them, its products carry maximum refund and 100% accuracy guarantees. Support email is handled through the site's forms and no address is published for consumers, so that field is blank.

Pros
  • Every major IRS form and schedule in a single tier — no mid-return upgrade when a new form appears
  • Costs less than half of TaxAct Premier and a third of TurboTax Premium for the same headline situations
  • Free phone and email technical support is included even at this tier, per TaxSlayer's published support terms
Cons
  • Tax help is the upsell: live chat, Ask a Tax Pro and audit assistance sit in Premium and Self-Employed, not Classic
  • Simply Free is narrow — no dependents, no EITC or Child Tax Credit, standard deduction only — so most families start at Classic
  • State pricing moved after the season: $39.99 in season against $47.99 on TaxSlayer's own page at research time

Cash App Taxes product photo
#6The Buck Blazer \u2014 lowest price in this category, American Ranking Institute award badge

Cash App Taxes

AmRank Score 84 $0

Best for: Single-state filers with simple or moderately complex returns who want to pay literally nothing — federal and state — and are comfortable inside the Cash App ecosystem.

Federal $0 · one state return $0No paid tier and no upsells at allCovers 1099s, investments and Schedule CState filing offered in 40 states plus DCRequires a Cash App account to file

Product review

Cash App Taxes is the only major service that is free all the way down: federal and one state return cost $0 whether the return holds a W-2, 1099 income, stock or bitcoin sales, or a Schedule C, with no paid tier waiting behind a paywall. The catch is scope, not price — one state, a supported-situations list with real edges, and a mandatory Cash App account.

The company

Cash App Taxes is provided by Cash App Taxes, Inc., part of Block, Inc., and descends from the former Credit Karma Tax. The company states it has filed over 12 million returns at $0 and stands behind the service with accurate calculations and maximum refund guarantees, as its site states them; it is an IRS-authorized e-file provider. Cash App publishes a support line, 1-800-969-1940, on the Cash App Taxes page; no support email is published, so that field is blank.

Pros
  • Genuinely $0 for federal and one state return, for simple and complex returns alike, per the maker's own FAQ
  • Covers the situations that break other free tiers: 1099 income, self-employment and investment sales stay free
  • Accurate calculations and maximum refund guarantees are stated by the maker despite the $0 price
Cons
  • One state return only — multi-state filers, movers and cross-border commuters cannot use it
  • State filing is not offered in every state (40 states plus DC, per Finder's 2026 review)
  • No tax-pro help or audit representation tier exists at any price; support is help-center and general phone support

TurboTax Deluxe (Do It Yourself Online)

AmRank Score 83 $79

Best for: Homeowners, parents and itemizers whose returns need deduction hunting but no investment sales, rental income or self-employment.

Online DIY · web and mobile appItemized deductions, mortgage interest, creditsState return $64 per state, additionalInvestment sales force an upgrade to PremiumSame import tools and guarantees as Premium

Product review

Deluxe is the TurboTax tier most households actually land in: the same interview, import tools and guarantees as Premium, aimed at itemized deductions, mortgage interest, childcare and education credits. It ranks separately from Premium because it serves a genuinely different filer — one with deductions to hunt but nothing to report on Schedules C, D or E.

The company

TurboTax is Intuit's consumer tax brand. As Intuit states them, Deluxe carries the same 100% accurate calculations guarantee (Intuit pays IRS penalties plus interest from a calculation error), maximum refund guarantee and free audit guidance as the rest of the Do It Yourself line; full Audit Defense is sold separately. Intuit publishes no consumer support email or general support phone for TurboTax, so both fields are blank.

Pros
  • TurboTax's deduction search across 350+ deductions and credits, per Intuit's marketing for this tier
  • Identical import automation and CompleteCheck review to the flagship tier, for $60 less
  • The natural landing spot for homeowners who itemize after the 2025 SALT cap rose to $40,000
Cons
  • The $64 per-state fee is the highest mainstream state price in this ranking and applies to Deluxe too
  • One small brokerage sale moves the whole return to the $139 Premium tier — the upgrade cliff is the product's defining frustration
  • Expert help is never included; Expert Assist reprices the return into a higher band

TurboTax Deluxe (Do It Yourself Online)

H&R Block Deluxe Online product photo

H&R Block Deluxe Online

AmRank Score 81 $65

Best for: Homeowners and HSA holders who itemize and want a national brand's guidance and office backup without paying investor-tier prices.

Online DIY · web and mobile appItemized deductions, HSA and dependent careState return $49 per state, additionalAI Tax Assist included on paid plansFree Online already covers retirement income

Product review

Deluxe is H&R Block's homeowner tier — itemized deductions, mortgage interest, HSA contributions and dependent care on top of a free tier that already covers more forms than TurboTax's, including retirement income. It ranks separately from Premium because its filer is different: deductions to claim, but nothing to sell, rent out or write off as a business.

The company

H&R Block was founded in 1955 and pairs its online products with thousands of US tax offices. As the company states them, its DIY products carry accuracy and maximum refund guarantees, and H&R Block markets free in-person audit support with its online plans. The company publishes a US support line, 1-800-472-5625; no support email is published, so that field is blank.

Pros
  • Undercuts TurboTax Deluxe by $14 federal and $15 per state for the same deduction situations
  • AI Tax Assist is included, and paid-plan buyers get the office network and free in-person audit support behind them
  • Block's free tier absorbs more situations than rivals', so fewer Deluxe buyers were upsold from a paid start
Cons
  • Season pricing swung hard: Deluxe was $35 with $37 state returns early in 2026 against the $65 and $49 standard prices used here
  • Investment or rental income pushes the return to the $105 Premium tier
  • Guidance and import depth trail TurboTax Deluxe in reviewer testing, at only $14 less federal

Jackson Hewitt Online product photo
#9

Jackson Hewitt Online

AmRank Score 79 $25

Best for: Multi-state filers and anyone allergic to tier math: one flat fee covers the federal return and every state return, whatever the return contains.

Flat $25 covers federal plus ALL state returnsAll IRS forms and schedules includedFree live chat support includedNo form or investment-data importNo free tier — simple returns also pay $25

Product review

Jackson Hewitt Online abolishes the tier chart: $25 files the federal return and every state return needed, for a simple W-2 return or a complex one with rentals and self-employment, under what the company calls a Transparent Pricing Guarantee. For a filer who moved states mid-year, that single number can beat every 'free' product in this ranking.

The company

Jackson Hewitt's own site reports 45 years in business and more than 70 million returns prepared, with over 5,200 locations including more than 2,600 inside Walmart stores. The company markets its online flat fee under a Transparent Pricing Guarantee, and its Biggest Refund Guarantee and Lifetime Accuracy Guarantee® stand behind its services as the company states them. Jackson Hewitt publishes a national line, 1-800-234-1040, on its site; no support email is published, so that field is blank.

Pros
  • The only all-in flat price in the field: federal plus unlimited state returns for $25, confirmed on the maker's own pages
  • All IRS forms and schedules are included, so complexity never reprices the return
  • Free live chat support is included, and 5,200+ offices exist if a filer wants to switch to a human
Cons
  • No import of prior returns, tax forms or investment data — everything is keyed in by hand, per The College Investor's 2026 review
  • No audit support for online filers, and no tax pro review option inside the online product
  • Reviewers find it cumbersome for landlords and the self-employed despite those forms being included

OLT Premium Edition (OnLine Taxes) product photo
#10

OLT Premium Edition (OnLine Taxes)

AmRank Score 77 $10

Best for: Frugal, confident filers — including farm and 1040-NR filers the free brands exclude — who want live support and audit assistance for under ten dollars.

Federal $9.95 standard ($7.95 promo at research)State return $9.95 per stateAll forms, incl. Schedules C, E, F and 1040-NRLive chat, phone support and audit assistanceFree Edition: federal $0, email support only

Product review

OLT's Premium Edition is the support tier of the web's quietest bargain: the Free Edition already files every federal form at $0, and $9.95 (standard price) adds live chat, phone support, audit assistance and year-over-year comparison. State returns are $9.95 each — the cheapest per-state price in this ranking after Cash App Taxes' free one.

The company

OnLine Taxes (OLT.com) is an IRS-authorized e-file provider that its site says has served taxpayers since 2000, with free federal filing since then. As the company states it, OLT carries a 100% accuracy guarantee on its calculations. Support is by email on every edition and by live chat and phone on Premium; OLT publishes no support email address or phone number on its product pages, so both fields are blank.

Pros
  • Full form coverage — Schedule C, E and F, even Form 1040-NR — at a standard federal price under $10
  • Amended returns are included on both editions, where most rivals charge per amendment
  • State returns at $9.95 are the cheapest paid state price in this ranking
Cons
  • A dated, utilitarian interface with none of the big brands' guidance polish
  • Premium phone support keeps limited hours — weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT, per OLT's own product page
  • Paying fees from your refund (Refund Transfer) adds a $29.95 charge, per OLT's pricing disclosures

OLT Premium Edition (OnLine Taxes)

The verdict

TurboTax Premium wins because it is the most complete do-it-yourself product in the field — the deepest import automation, the most patient guidance through investments, rentals and self-employment, and guarantees stated in full — even at the field's highest price, $139 plus $64 per state. The honest alternatives split by what you value: FreeTaxUSA Deluxe is the value champion, filing every federal return free and adding live chat and unlimited amendments for $7.99; H&R Block Premium is the same filing territory as TurboTax for $34 less, with offices and free in-person audit support behind it; and Cash App Taxes is the only product that is free for federal and state alike, if one state and its supported-situations list cover you. Pay a flagship price only when your return is genuinely complex — for most filers, the ranking's middle is where the money is saved.

Questions, answered

Is any tax software really free for both federal and state returns?

Yes, exactly one major one: Cash App Taxes files a federal return and one state return for $0 at any income, including 1099 income, investment sales and Schedule C. FreeTaxUSA files every federal return free but charges $15.99 per state return. IRS Free File also offered free guided filing for the 2026 season to taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, through partner brands reached from IRS.gov. Every other “free” tier in this ranking is a simple-return tier with upgrade triggers.

Why did my “free” return suddenly cost money?

Because the tier, not the brand, was free. At TurboTax, investment sales, rental income and self-employment move you from Free Edition to the $139 Premium tier, and itemizing lands you in $79 Deluxe. At H&R Block, itemizing or an HSA means $65 Deluxe and investments mean $105 Premium. FreeTaxUSA, Cash App Taxes, TaxSlayer Classic and OLT never charge by form — their free or flat prices survive complexity, which is the single biggest pricing difference in this category.

How much does a state return add?

It depends entirely on the brand, and it is where cheap products stop being cheap. For the 2026 season: Cash App Taxes charges $0 for one state; OLT charges $9.95 per state; FreeTaxUSA $15.99; Jackson Hewitt includes every state return in its $25 flat fee; TaxAct charged $39.99 per state in season; TaxSlayer's maker page now shows $47.99; H&R Block charges $49 per state on paid tiers; TurboTax charges $64 per state. Multi-state filers should price the state column first.

What do the accuracy and maximum refund guarantees actually cover?

As each maker states them: an accuracy guarantee means that if the software's calculation error causes IRS or state penalties or interest, the maker reimburses them — TaxAct caps its promise at $100,000. A maximum refund guarantee means that if another method produces a bigger refund from the same data, the maker refunds your fees (terms vary). Neither covers errors in the numbers you entered. Audit support means guidance on responding to the IRS; audit defense or representation — a professional dealing with the IRS for you — is a separate paid product almost everywhere.

What happened to IRS Direct File, and can I still file free through the IRS?

Direct File, the IRS's own free filing tool piloted in 2024 and expanded in 2025, was discontinued: the IRS confirmed it would not be available for Filing Season 2026. The separate IRS Free File program continues — guided software from eight partner companies, free for tax year 2025 if your AGI was $89,000 or less — but you must enter through IRS.gov; starting at a partner's own site lands you in its paid retail product instead.
