Best Portable Air Conditioners 2026 — Top 10

Portable air conditioners are rated twice, and the gap between the two numbers decides whether a room actually gets cool. The headline figure (ASHRAE) is the older bench test; the DOE SACC figure adjusts for the heat a portable unit itself adds back into the room and is always lower - a portable sold as 14,000 BTU typically delivers 7,700-12,000 BTU on the DOE scale. AmRank scores cooling on the SACC figure where the maker publishes it, and this ranking states both numbers on every card.

Vent design is the second dividing line: dual-hose and hose-in-hose models draw and expel air outside, while single-hose models pull the room into slight negative pressure and drag warm air back in through door gaps. Every model below was verified against the manufacturer's own manual or specification sheet for capacity, noise and warranty terms. Prices are the street figures captured during research in early November 2026 ahead of Black Friday, and Amazon routes are confirmed by a visual check before publication.

Heating sibling of the ranked NEX: the maker's page pairs the same 12,000 BTU SACC inverter platform with a 12,000 BTU heat pump. Cut as a near-duplicate variant; the first candidate if a heat-first slot opens in this category. Gate update 2026-11-06: checked as a promotion candidate and held out — its Amazon page showed no featured offer (See All Buying Options only), the same suppression pattern as the held Frigidaire FHPC142AA1.

Hisense HAP0824TWD
Dual-hose inverter for rooms to 350 sq ft: 8,000 BTU SACC, 42 dB at low speed and an unusually strong 2-year full warranty in the maker's US page and manual. Screened because the only Amazon route found in this pass was a renewed listing and the maker's page publishes no direct new-unit price; first promotion candidate for a small-room slot. Gate update 2026-11-06: checked as a promotion candidate and held out — the candidate ASIN's featured offer was a used unit ($229.99) and the only other verified listing is (Renewed), so no new-unit route exists.

NoiseAs low as 42 dB
DesignDual hose-in-hose, inverter
Strengths
  • The 12,000 BTU DOE (SACC) rating is the strongest verified cooling figure in this ranking - the number that matters on the DOE test, not just the 14,000 BTU ASHRAE headline
  • Hose-in-hose venting and an inverter compressor hold a set temperature without the on-off swings, and without dragging warmed air back in, that basic single-hose designs suffer
  • A heat-pump mode stretches the same unit into spring and fall, and 42 dB low-speed operation is genuinely bedroom-friendly
Watch out
  • At about 77 lb, moving it between floors is a two-person job despite the casters
  • The heat pump only operates in roughly 41-86 °F ambient air, so it is no help during a cold snap
  • One year of parts-and-labor coverage is short protection on a $550 machine; a year-two compressor failure is on the owner
Product review

Midea's Duo with heat earns the top spot on verified output: the maker's own listing rates it at 12,000 BTU under the DOE SACC test (14,000 BTU ASHRAE), the strongest SACC figure we could verify from manufacturer documents in this class, delivered through a hose-in-hose dual-hose design with an inverter compressor. It is rated for rooms up to 550 sq ft, drops to 42 dB at low speed and adds heat-pump heating for shoulder seasons. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Cooling12,000 BTU DOE SACC

EfficiencyCEER 13.8, inverter
Strengths
  • Matches the class-best 12,000 BTU SACC output and stretches rated coverage to 600 sq ft, the largest verified room claim in this ranking
  • A CEER of 13.8 is the strongest efficiency figure in the makers' own data here, so the big cooling costs less to run hour for hour
  • Dehumidifying rated at 87 pints a day plus full Wi-Fi control make it a genuine four-mode room system, not just a cooler
Watch out
  • The $659 street price is flagship money for a portable - the premium buys efficiency and coverage, not a longer warranty on the unit itself
  • Whynter warranty service is handled by mail-in to its service center, a real burden with a roughly 75 lb machine
  • The hose-in-hose window kit seals standard sliding windows well, but crank-out casement windows need owner-made adaptation
Product review

Whynter's NEX inverter flagship ties the class-best verified output at 12,000 BTU DOE SACC (14,000 BTU ASHRAE) and stretches rated coverage to 600 sq ft, the largest room claim in this ranking that is backed by the maker's own specification table. The hose-in-hose design, a CEER of 13.8 and 42.5 dB low-speed operation make it the efficiency pick among the big-cooling models, and it dehumidifies at a rated 87 pints a day. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Headline14,000 BTU ASHRAE
CoverageUp to 450 sq ft (DOE)
Noise43 dBA in Ultra Quiet mode
Strengths
  • The strongest verified DOE output in the maker's portable line: 10,500 BTU DOE against the 14,000 BTU ASHRAE headline, per Frigidaire's own specification sheet
  • An inverter compressor holds a set temperature without the on-off swings of a fixed-speed unit, and 43 dBA Ultra Quiet operation is the quietest figure Frigidaire publishes for a portable
  • Wi-Fi with the Frigidaire app, Alexa and Google Assistant support, plus built-in indoor air quality monitoring, at the Gallery trim level
Watch out
  • It is a single-hose design, so in a large open-plan space it draws replacement air through door gaps and the far end of the room stays warmer
  • The maker's specification lists no remote control for this model, so away-from-the-unit control depends entirely on the app and a working Wi-Fi connection
  • One year of warranty coverage is short protection on a $599 machine; a year-two compressor failure is on the owner
Product review

Frigidaire's Gallery inverter model is the quiet, high-output step up in the maker's own portable line: its specification sheet rates it at 10,500 BTU on the DOE basis (14,000 BTU ASHRAE), the highest DOE figure Frigidaire publishes for a portable, delivered by an inverter compressor at a rated 43 dBA in Ultra Quiet mode with a CEER of 12.5. Rated DOE coverage is 450 sq ft, Wi-Fi control through the Frigidaire app with Alexa and Google Assistant support is built in, and a built-in sensor monitors indoor air quality. At 81 lb it is a heavy unit despite the casters. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Strengths
  • The CEER of 14.7 published in the model's own manual is the strongest efficiency figure in the NEX line, so its 10,000 BTU SACC output costs less to run hour for hour
  • Rated coverage to 500 sq ft with 42.5 dB low-speed noise in the model's own specification table - genuinely usable overnight output for a mid-size room
  • Dehumidifying rated at 82 pints a day plus full Wi-Fi control through NetHome Plus, Alexa and Google Home
Watch out
  • Cooling only: the model's own manual lists Auto, Cool, Fan and Dry modes and no heat mode, so it does no work once the season turns cold
  • The $679 price is flagship money for a 500 sq ft rating - the premium buys the CEER 14.7 efficiency figure, not extra coverage or a longer warranty on the unit itself
  • Warranty service is mail-in, a heavy errand with a 72.8 lb machine if it fails inside the first year
Product review

The ARC-1030WN is the smaller of Whynter's NEX inverter dual-hose models, and its own manual rates it at 10,000 BTU under the DOE SACC test (12,000 BTU ASHRAE) with coverage to 500 sq ft. Its CEER of 14.7 is the highest efficiency figure in the maker's NEX specification table, low-speed noise is rated at 42.5 dB, and dehumidification is rated at 82 pints a day through the same hose-in-hose design and NetHome Plus Wi-Fi control as the larger models. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Strengths
  • LG's spec sheet publishes the full noise ladder down to 44 dB in Sleep mode, the quietest verified figure in this ranking for overnight use
  • The Dual Inverter compressor trims temperature swings and start-up power surges compared with a fixed-speed unit
  • Voltage, watts, refrigerant and both capacity ratings are all published in the maker's documents, making the model easy to verify before buying
Watch out
  • For all its inverter sophistication it vents through a single hose, so a leaky room undermines the efficiency the compressor earns
  • At a $699.00 street price it costs flagship money for 10,000 BTU SACC of verified cooling
  • LG's own store showed the model out of stock at research time, so availability runs through retail stock that varies by week
Product review

LG's Dual Inverter portable is the bedroom pick: LG's own spec sheet publishes a full noise ladder down to 44 dB in Sleep mode alongside the honest pair of ratings - 10,000 BTU SACC against the 14,000 BTU ASHRAE headline. The Dual Inverter compressor trims the temperature swings and start-up surges of a fixed-speed unit, and ThinQ Wi-Fi control is built in. No Amazon route is listed for this model because no ASIN for it could be verified to our standard in this pass; the buy route is the maker's page. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Noise43 dBA in maker specs
Strengths
  • The full Duo formula at this size: a verified 10,000 BTU DOE SACC rating against the 12,000 BTU ASHRAE headline, delivered through the hose-in-hose design rather than a single hose that drags warm air back in
  • The inverter compressor holds a set temperature without the on-off swings of a fixed-speed unit, and Midea attributes over 40% energy savings to the design against the federal standard
  • A 43 dBA published noise figure, 26-foot rated airflow reach and full app, Alexa and Google control make it an easy fit for a bedroom or home office up to 450 sq ft
Watch out
  • There is no heat mode at all - the maker's own spec sheet lists Heating: No - so in the shoulder seasons this unit goes into storage while a separate heater does that work
  • At 72.6 lb it weighs nearly as much as the larger Duo models despite the smaller rating, so moving it between floors is still a two-person job
  • One year of parts-and-labor coverage is short protection on a $599 machine, and the model carries no Energy Star certification in the maker's own spec table
Product review

The MAP12S1TBL is the cooling-only member of Midea's Duo family: the maker's own specification table rates it at 10,000 BTU under the DOE SACC test (12,000 BTU ASHRAE) for rooms up to 450 sq ft, delivered through the same hose-in-hose vent and inverter compressor as the with-heat Duo at the top of this ranking, but with no heat mode - Midea's spec sheet lists Heating: No. The maker's published noise figure is 43 dBA, the air duct is rated to project cool air up to 26 feet, and cooling, dehumidifying and fan modes are controlled by app, remote, Alexa or Google Assistant. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Cooling10,000 BTU DOE
Headline14,000 BTU ASHRAE
CoverageUp to 400 sq ft
Noise46 dB
Strengths
  • Drainage-free cooling in conditions under 85% humidity removes the bucket-emptying routine that interrupts most portables mid-heatwave
  • 46 dB operation with app, Alexa and Google control is a strong noise-and-smarts package at $539.99
  • The maker's own pages publish a real support phone and email, which several bigger brands in this category do not
Watch out
  • Single-hose venting pulls replacement air in from hallways and gaps, so cooling a room with the door open to a hot hallway works against itself
  • The drainage-free claim stops at 85% humidity - in a Gulf Coast summer the drain routine comes back
  • Rated coverage of 400 sq ft is the smallest in this 14,000 BTU class, so it is a one-room machine despite the headline number
Product review

Dreo's AC516S pairs a verified 10,000 BTU DOE rating (14,000 BTU ASHRAE) with the two quality-of-life features owners feel daily: 46 dB operation and drainage-free cooling in conditions under 85% humidity, so there is no bucket to empty mid-heatwave. App, Alexa and Google control are standard, and the maker publishes a real support phone and email on its own pages. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

FeatureFollow Me remote, Wi-Fi
Strengths
  • Follow Me remote sensing plus Wi-Fi control at a mid-pack price, features several higher-priced units here lack
  • The maker's manual publishes a real support phone and email for this exact model family
  • Five-year compressor-parts coverage in the manual is longer parts protection than the 1-year headline suggests
Watch out
  • The rating conflict is real: the listing advertises 10,200 BTU SACC while the unit's own DOE label reads 7,700 BTU - plan room size on 7,700, which makes the 700 sq ft claim unrealistic
  • Single-hose venting drags warm air back into the room through gaps, cutting further into that already modest DOE output
  • Cooling a top-floor room over a hot garage - exactly where units like this get bought - is where the gap between the ASHRAE headline and DOE reality shows up first
Product review

Read this card carefully, because the two capacity numbers for this model do not agree: the Amazon listing advertises 10,200 BTU SACC, but the unit's own DOE label evidence puts it at 7,700 BTU, and this card is scored on the conservative 7,700 BTU figure against the 14,000 BTU ASHRAE headline. What remains is a Wi-Fi portable with a Follow Me sensing remote and published support contacts at a mid-pack price - a reasonable buy for a modest room, sized on the DOE number. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

Strengths
  • The manual publishes the DOE figure most budget brands hide: 7,500 BTU SACC, checkable in the model's own specification table before purchase
  • At $289.99 it is the cheapest verified portable in this ranking, and its SACC output per dollar beats every other card here
  • Dehumidification rated at 43.2 liters a day with a self-evaporating design, plus swing airflow, three fan speeds and a 24-hour timer - a complete feature set at the price
Watch out
  • Single-hose venting pulls replacement air in through door gaps, so part of its modest 7,500 BTU SACC output is spent re-cooling air drawn in from outside the room
  • Plan the room on the manual's 400 sq ft figure, not the 450 sq ft in the listing copy - and a sun-baked top-floor room will overwhelm 7,500 BTU SACC on the hottest afternoons
  • Support is email-only with no published phone number, and the 1-year warranty carries no compressor extension, so a year-two failure is on the owner
Product review

The SPF1-12C is the honest budget end of this category: its own manual publishes both ratings - 12,000 BTU ASHRAE against 7,500 BTU on the DOE SACC test - alongside 52 dB noise, 400 sq ft coverage and 43.2 liters a day of dehumidification, and it sells at $289.99, the lowest street price in this ranking. What the low price gives up is output and frills: fixed-speed single-hose cooling, no Wi-Fi on this version and email-only support. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

BatteryOptional 1,024 Wh, 2-8 hr runtime
Strengths
  • The only battery-capable compressor air conditioner in this ranking: on the optional add-on battery it cools for 2-8 hours with no outlet, no generator and no window kit, and it can also run from AC power, a car outlet, solar or an EcoFlow power station
  • Cooling plus 6,800 BTU of heating in one 33.7 lb box rated by its own manual for 120-180 sq ft - the right size for the tents, RVs, vans and truck cabs it was built for, with a 44 dB sleep mode for overnight use
  • A 24-month warranty in EcoFlow's published US warranty policy covers both the unit and the add-on battery, and the maker publishes a real US support phone and email
Watch out
  • EcoFlow publishes no DOE SACC rating, and 6,100 BTU on the maker's own figure is rated for only 120-180 sq ft - it cannot cool a normal room the way the DOE-scored models above it can
  • The $899 price buys the unit alone: the 1,024 Wh add-on battery that makes it cordless is sold separately, so the true off-grid setup costs far more than the card price
  • Battery runtime spans 2-8 hours in the maker's own spec table, so a full-power cooling run sits at the short end of that range; lasting all night depends on Eco or Sleep settings
Product review

The WAVE 3 is in this ranking for one reason no other model here can match: it is a real compressor air conditioner that can run without a wall outlet. EcoFlow's own spec table rates it at 6,100 BTU of cooling and 6,800 BTU of heating for spaces of 120-180 sq ft - and publishes no DOE SACC figure, so unlike every other card in this ranking its cooling cannot be compared on the DOE scale and is scored on the maker's number with that caveat attached. With the optional 1,024 Wh add-on battery (sold separately) it runs 2-8 hours cordless, at 33.7 lb it travels in a car trunk, and it also heats, dehumidifies and runs a pet-care mode through the EcoFlow app. Owner satisfaction is scored at a disclosed neutral value: we could not isolate this model's own Amazon rating aggregate to our verification standard in this pass, so no owner star figure is claimed for it.

The company

EcoFlow built its name on portable power stations, and the WAVE line applies that battery ecosystem to climate control. The WAVE 3 carries a 24-month warranty in EcoFlow's published US warranty policy, and US support is published at 1-800-368-8604 and [email protected].

EcoFlow WAVE 3 Portable Air Conditioner

The verdict

Buy the Midea Duo MAP14HS1TBL if it fits the budget: its verified 12,000 BTU SACC output, hose-in-hose inverter design and heat pump make it the most complete portable in this test, with the Whynter NEX ARC-1230WN a step behind for larger rooms. On a tighter budget the Frigidaire FHPC142AA1 delivers an honest 10,000 BTU DOE at $429. Whatever the brand, plan the room around the SACC number, not the headline.

Questions, answered

What is the difference between ASHRAE and DOE SACC ratings?

ASHRAE is the older bench test of raw cooling capacity. The DOE SACC test adjusts that figure for the heat a portable unit's own body and hose add back into the room, so it is always lower - and it is the better predictor of how a real room feels. A portable sold as 14,000 BTU ASHRAE typically delivers 7,700-12,000 BTU SACC. AmRank scores cooling on the SACC figure wherever the maker publishes it, and every card in this ranking shows both numbers.

Is a dual-hose portable air conditioner worth it?

For a room you cool all day, usually yes. A single-hose unit expels hot air but pulls replacement air in through door gaps and cracks, dragging heat back in; dual-hose and hose-in-hose designs draw and expel air outdoors, so their published SACC advantage shows up in real rooms. The trade-off is a bulkier window kit and, often, a higher price.

Do portable air conditioners need to be drained?

In dehumidifier or fan modes, yes - condensate collects and must be drained. In cooling mode most modern units evaporate condensate out through the exhaust hose, and some, like the Dreo in this ranking, are drainage-free below 85% humidity. In very humid climates any model can need an occasional manual drain during cooling.

What size portable air conditioner do I need for a bedroom?

Size it on the DOE SACC number, not the headline. As a working guide from the makers' own coverage ratings in this test: about 8,000 BTU SACC covers a 300-350 sq ft room, 10,000 BTU SACC covers roughly 400-450 sq ft, and 12,000 BTU SACC reaches 550-600 sq ft. High ceilings, west-facing glass and a hot top floor all argue for the next size up.

Can one portable air conditioner cool a whole apartment?

Not realistically. A portable is a one-room machine: its rated coverage assumes a closed door and its own exhaust heat stays outside. It can take the edge off an adjacent room with the door open, but two smaller units in two rooms will outperform one large unit asked to do both.
